What do professional and semi-professional basketball players do during the off-season?

Let’s talk about semi-professionals first. It’s a fact they don’t earn much money from playing and because it’s not the NBA you don’t get any endorsement deals either.Enter Andre Ingram when he was called up by the Lakers he was 32 years old.Andre played a decade in the G-League where you roughly earn USD$19k - $26k per season. For a semi-professional player this is never enough to get by (Andre by the way earned only USD $19k in the G-League last season.)So what does he do to make ends meet?He is a math tutor. [1]On the other end of the scale you have the pros in the NBA. A quick look at the salary scale suggest even undrafted rooks gets about USD $850k and those on the fringe gets a 2-way contract that’s worth max USD $385k ($77k is the base from what I can understand) if you get all the call ups eg Allonzo Trier.[2]Not exactly flushed with cash but by all means not poor either.Going back to the question what do they do during off-season?Well established players have many things on their ‘to-do’ list;Skills training - hungry players trains hard to take their game to the next level eg. Jeremy Lin is a much different player compared to his Linsaity days from handles and shooting formWeight training eg adding or losing body weightEndorsement appearance eg Klay’s visit to China for ANTABasketball campsInvestments opportunities - Andre Iguodala from memory do a lot of angel investmentsRecover from off-season surgeries - not everyone thinks like Shaq eg ‘I got hurt on company time, so I'll heal on company time’TravelsMeet up with fellow NBA friends and ride on the banana boatsFootnotes[1] Who is Andre Ingram? Lakers' 32-year-old rookie is a math tutor, ex-Patriot League star[2] NBA G League Announces Player Salaries For 2018-2019 Season - NBA G League

Who is Shulamit Widawsky?

EDIT: When I was first asked this question, I was completely unaware that this was a standard question to ask people who answered on Quora. I have since updated my answer.Who is Shulamit Widawsky?A nice person who manages to offend people on both sides of the aisle. I am deeply committed to scientific advances, logic, G-d, religion, philosophy, art, education, birth control, sex education, love, and a whole bunch of others things that I don't understand why people think are in conflict with each other.I have no patience for narrow-mindedness or zealotry, where ever it may be found.I have been accused by atheists of not honestly accepting their belief that there is no G-d, and I have been accused by religious folks of not "really" being religious. Meanwhile, I study physics, cosmology, and medicine as hobbies, but I also work on retranslating and reinterpreting Genesis 1 to 3, because I think the real point has been missed.Born in the early 1960's in Los Angeles, CA, I am amongst the last of the "baby boomers." This leaves me rather not exactly a baby boomer, nor generation x. I grew up as the eldest of 5 kids, and the only girl. From the age of 7, I considered it my job to help raise the boys. They did not always appreciate that.My first job was at age 11. I was hired by an Asian immigrant family around the corner, to tutor their children in English. After a couple weeks, the grandmother decided to sit in on my lessons. By week four, the parents were sitting in as well.As far as I can tell, I was born a teacher. But my father told me not to become a teacher, he felt it didn't pay well enough. He wanted me to become an attorney, but that did not interest me (he did convince two of my brothers to follow in his legal footsteps).Although highly intelligent (more than I realized back then), I also had a variety of learning disabilities and ADHD. As a child, I was a tall, brilliant, outspoken Jew, who had a lot going on in her mind, but wasn't always understanding how the society around her worked. Safe to say, I was both well known, and not well understood, and found myself annoying a lot of people, very often, without understanding why.At age 16 I realized my parents had not done a good job teaching me to live in society, and I began reading etiquette books, cover to cover. The first college course I took was one called "Marriage and the Family" with a text book of the same name. I read that book cover to cover as well, even though not all of it was assigned. At age 17 I moved from my mother's house to my father's house, and at age 18 (the day after my birthday) I moved out on my own. I took acting classes at a community college, and toyed with the idea of becoming an actor, but decided against it. That is when I went to trade school and learned to be a sign painter. It was the beginning of the 1980's, and I was very good at lettering. I was able to earn $20 an hour at sign painting, which was a significant amount of money back then.In my early 20's I decided to go back to college for real, and earn a degree. It wasn't easy, with my various learning disabilities and ADHD, but in five years, I earned a BA in psychology from the University of Judaism (now called the American Jewish University) in L.A. I spent most of my junior year abroad in Israel. After graduation, I tried graduate school in San Francisco, in educational therapy, but CA experienced a serious financial crunch that year, and my very small program was cut. I left without completing the MA.However, in SF I did meet my future husband, so it was definitely worth it. We have been married for over two decades, and I've never met anyone else I could imagine being a better match for me. We have two beautiful and brilliant sons, both of whom are now launched, but still very connected to us.At the beginning of our relationship, we spent about a year in Hangzhou, China, while my husband worked on his dissertation research, and I taught English and studied art. Here's an example of that art (larger at Art by Shulamit):My art teacher informed me that my style was very Western. We moved back to Palo Alto where my husband completed his Ph.D. in Environmental Economics. We had our first son there. After the first son was born, we moved to Los Baños, Philippines, where my husband did a Rockefeller post doc at the International Rice Research Institute, and I painted, taught drawing, and had our second son. Here's one of my paintings from then, (larger at Art by Shulamit) :For a couple decades, starting in college, I supported myself in a variety of ways, including tutoring twice exceptional students (that is, gifted and disabled in some way), teaching religious school at local synagogues, and making Jewish wedding contracts called ketubot. Here's a picture of one that is still on the market:Truly, the internet does not do any of these pieces justice. When the boys were young, besides making art, I also worked at a Jewish day school, and then at Americans for Peace Now, which supports a two-state solution to peace between Israel and Palestine. During that time (late 1990's) I started writing children's stories to tell to my boys, and writing about my philosophy of G-d and religion. Odd combination, I suppose, but those are my favorite writing subjects. At the end of the 1990's, I decided to spend more time working with highly and profoundly gifted people. I got trained to lead SENG Model Parent Groups, and led them for a local school district. At that time, I was speaking at conferences around the country on the social and emotional issues of the gifted. See: Shulamit Widawsky, Consultant for the Gifted.Unfortunately, just as that career was becoming something impressive, I was hit by an SUV. I was driving an old Toyota tin can, and an SUV sped through a red turn signal going about 50 miles per hour, and hit me where I sat. In that moment, my life changed, completely.I spent a couple years in a wheel chair, and several years using a cane. My "mild brain damage" was significant, and everything I had worked for up to that moment, was sent back to square one. That was over ten years ago, and now, the only people who can tell I am in any way diminished from who I was, are my close relatives. In the last ten years, I've worked at getting myself back, improving my writing, and regrowing my practice as a mental health professional working with the highly and profoundly gifted. Presently, I am also the Communications Director for my local professional counselors association, even though I am not a licensed counselor. I am a cross between a therapist and a personal consultant. I work with all ages, individuals, families, and parents, as well as groups. Also at this time, I am working on turning my religious philosophy into a book that includes reevaluating the meaning of the beginning of the book of Genesis, as well as working on illustrating some of my children's stories. Here's one example of my illustrations. This is my second "painting" done using electronic illustration. I painted this one on my Samsung Galaxy Note 4, with an S-pen.I very much enjoy improving my writing by writing nearly every day on Quora. I've long said that the best way to spend a lot of time doing something, is to get addicted to a useful activity. It seems, I have finally accomplished that: I would say I am addicted to writing on Quora.Probably I would be more successful if I limited myself to doing only one or two things, rather than five, but the five I engage in are, themselves, a severe limitation from the 50 other things I do not do!There is a Jewish saying, "to answer a question on one foot." It means, to give a brief answer to a question that would benefit from a very long answer. I don't know that I've managed one foot with this answer, I think I've changed feet a few times. But I hope this answer is satisfying to the few people who might care to read it.Courage!Shulamit
