I’ve been practicing as a medical examiner for almost two years now, and I love my job!Being a medical examiner is nothing like what you see on the crime shows; to me, it’s more exhilarating. I work with unexpected and violent deaths, my job being to find the cause of death of the individual I will be performing an autopsy on.I work long hours and often receive anxiety due to how important it is to be correct about my findings once finished performing an autopsy, but I am absolutely in love with the job!So, what is it like being a medical examiner? I could talk all day about my job, but instead I’ll go over a few pointers: I take apart the body an organ at a time, weighing the organs and looking for anything suspicious outside or inside of the body. Once I discover the cause of death I write it on the death certificate and move onto the next body.But my job doesn’t stop at the death certificate. Not only am I working to be able to testify in court as an ‘expert witness,’ my job also includes helping grieving families with the loss of a loved one.Becoming a medical examiner is a very rewarding job. If you are interested in the field of forensics (or, rather, death in general), Forensics Pathology may be the field for you!

There are basically 6-7 categories of test.I am writing down the categories that I remember in medical examination. I don't know the medical names of all tests. I'll just write a brief of what happened in each category.After filling out forms you will undergo a lot of tests over the next 5 days.1. Identification: Though strictly not medical but a doctor would personally write down 2 permanent identification marks on your body.2. X ray of your ribs and Ultrasound of your stomach to check any anomaly.3. ENT ( Ear, Nose, Throat) : For the ear he will make you stand at a distance of 5 metre and a medical assistant will put a paper on one of your ears and scratch a pencil on it continuously. Simultaneously the doctor will call out certain numbers at variable volumes and you need to repeat what you hear. After this he will use a tool (its fitted with a small camera) to see inside your ear, nose and throat. That's it. ENT over.4. Dental: The doctor will use a tool to check your dental points,etc. Barely takes 50 seconds.5. Eyes: Tests include checking your eye's power of accommodation, eyesight, alphabetical chart reading, colour blindness test, etc. Will take around 5-10 mins. Requirements for army, navy, air force are different. According to the test the doctor will mention fit for Army, Air Force, Navy or fit for all.6. Surgical: Tests include checking legs, knees, arms, body joints, genitals and movement of body parts. Don't worry. You don't have to get naked in front of your friends. The doctor will maintain privacy when he checks your genitals. Also make sure to shave all the pubic hair before going for the test. Doctors feel disgusted if a candidate comes without shaving it off. Surgical takes around 15-20 mins.7. Height, weight, pulse, blood, blood pressure, urine tests.That is all.In case the doctors find an anomaly in any of the above they give you a TR (temporary rejection). You can apply for a review medical board and get yourself checked again for that particular anomaly in a military hospital of your choice within 42 days of medical board conference which takes place on 5th day of the medical test.Some anomalies are curable while others are not. Example: Weight is correctable and can be reduced. Hence in review medical board such a person would be cleared to join academy if he has corrected his weight. Issues in the Spine, kidney, heart are not curable and in that case a candidate may get a Permanent rejection and be unable to join the academy. All women are familiar with the contraption used by gynecologists to perform internal examinations. Your bottom precariously perched on the edge while your feet are positioned in stirrups, and knees pointed straight at the ceiling. While in that awkward position, my doctor takes his place on a stool with his eyes and my vagina level with each other and shines a spotlight on my genitalia. In one particular instance, after we were all in our assigned spots, one of the stirrups disengaged from the table and caused my leg to lash out wildly, desperate to find purchase to keep me from falling completely off the precipice. Unfortunately, the closest object to latch onto was my doctor’s neck. My vagina literally smacked him in the face. He started to tumble off of his stool, which would have been disastrous for both of us, but luckily, his nurse was able to stabilize the entire twisted conglomeration that we had become before we hit the floor. At that point my entire butt was off the table with one stirruped foot my only source of support. The nurse pulled my leg from around the doctor’s neck while he lifted my left butt cheek off of his shoulder. With great effort, we managed to hoist my lower half back up on the table. At that point, it was by mutual agreement that the examination was suspended and rescheduled for a later date. After dressing and exiting the office, I could have sworn that I saw the doctor spit out pubic hairs, and there was commotion that sounded distinctly like hysterical laughter coming from the nurse’s cubbyhole. In hindsight, I realized that I could have been severely injured if the incident had occurred while the necessary instruments were in place. All in all, a disaster of historical proportions, and all true.
