PDF Editor FAQ

When is it okay to include concept or not yet launched client work in your online design portfolio?

Totally valid granted your client is ok in you showing that work. If they are not ok the of course that could cause trouble for you. I wouldn't dismiss work samples based on how old they are unless you feel that style/approach is something you have outgrown and wouldn't really do anymore. I had a portfolio review 10 days ago and showed everything so people saw my evolution but explained how I've gotten to where I am today. Certainly clients or employers will admire real/live work but it is not critical at all.

How do you develop a freelance career in the comic book industry?

Depends on what kind of career you want. If you want to be an artist, you can start by taking your samples to conventions. Not only pin-ups, but also samples of sequential storytelling art. Many editors will conduct portfolio reviews at conventions so you could show them there. Depending on the publisher, some may even allow you to submit your samples online. You’d have to check the various websites. If you want to be a writer, that’s a steeper hill to climb. Your best bet would be to get some work published. Find an artist and create your own comic book. With digital publishing and print on demand, it’s easier and cheaper than ever to publish your own comic book.

A design exercise for an interview may be asking for a free ride. They sent a design exercise which looks too detailed. They even provided visual assets and visual specs, which allows 2 days to revamp a website page across platforms. What should do?

The first question you need to ask is what role are they really trying to hire? Successful UX design for complex projects is multidisciplinary, despite arguments otherwise. Unless the job is for a simple website designer, you've described the job for two different UX roles. UX Designer has become the most over used title since Web Designer or, worse yet, Desktop Publisher. What you've described is the combined role of a User Interface Designer and Production Artist.Redesigning a website UI for desktop and mobile is the role of a User Interface Designer. The deliverables from this person are UI wire frames, which are greyscale mockups of key screens without any visual design applied. They will include indicators for every screen element, but they are not typically pixel perfect, because the visual design is meant to enhance the usability so the layouts may change.Furthermore, you were supplied with Visual Design assets and specifications, so your Visual Design skills aren't being tested. Providing pixel perfect layered PSD files is typically the production task of a Visual Designer or Production Artist. This task is not something to ask from a UI Designer. We've asked potential job candidates to engage in sample project exercises either collaboratively during an interview or as a limited take away project. The take away projects were very specific and included appropriate supporting information. We paid for take away projects, even though we had no intention of using their work, because we valued their time. This still can't guarantee the future compatibility with a candidate, but it reveals more than a conversation and a portfolio review. It also gives candidates a good opportunity to evaluate us, which is equally important!BTW - there is a lot of information gathering that should be done prior to doing the design exercise you described, so their request is either a trick or they are clueless.Long winded answer, but I hope it helped.
