I studied in ITB and that is a few years ago (I entered in 2008), so this might not be applicable for the current condition. Back then, ITB still had its independent entrance exam or USM. However, I’ll share my experience.To add more background, my highschool was in Yogyakarta: SMA 3 Yogyakarta. It’s considered a good HS in Yogyakarta.When I was in high school, first and second year, I was unbelievably active in extracurricular activities (I joined, like, 4-5 of them). I came home at 5pm, after all the activities were finished. At night? No, I was (and still am) not the kind of diligent student who study everyday. I think I only studied when there were homeworks or exam. I didn’t really care about my grade and sometimes I got 2 out of 10 in tests. LOL, but in the end my school report was good anyway.This changed when I was in 3rd year of HS. all the extracurricular are dropped, and nearly all of my classmates took an afterclass lesson in a “Bimbel” or “bimbingan belajar” - a place when you are tutored in small classes. In Yogyakarta, the prominent ones back then were Ganesha Operation and Sony Sugema College. These tutoring places indeed faced criticisms for teaching student the “shortcut” way and not the full understanding of a problem, but the full understanding is being taught in school anyway. I personally only use them to force me to study, because otherwise I wouldn’t. (But anyway I was lucky I hadn’t discovered internet back then, and there were no Netflix yet. If so there is no way I would study at all. LOL)These Bimbels, by the way, are expensive. Prepare your money. I remember one of my friends had to compare the price of every packages that the Bimbels offer (Yea, they have a lot of “products”. Back then i chose the regular one, three times a week x 3 hours, PLUS a special way for USM-ITB, 2 times a week x 3 hours). These things make me get used to the type of questions in the entrance exam, and in the books they use there are also practice questions that I love to do. (Yes, I love to do practice questions. LOL you probably have to love it too)On top of this, I made use of try-outs that is organized often (in Yogyakarta, back then, I attended, like, idk, 5 of them? It’s roughly once every 2 months). By those try-outs, you know how you compare with your friends. In the end, getting a place in a university is more about competition with other people (unlike the national exam where you compete against the lowest score to pass).Anyway, in the end I was accepted in ITB’s independent entrance exam, so I have no idea whether this is applicable to current SBMPTN scheme.Other experiences:I know a friend who doesn’t live in a big city like Yogyakarta; he lives in a smaller town an hour away/30ish km and attended a local public HS there. He did what I did too for the Bimbel: 3 times a week, he rode his motorcycle to Yogyakarta to do the Bimbel and rode back in the evening. In the end, he was accepted in SNMPTN (a predecessor to SBMPTN). So I think this Bimbel way worked. A lot of my friends from other cities also attended these Bimbels too, e.g. BTA 8 Jakarta.I’m not endorsing the Bimbel way nor do I endorse the Bimbel services that I have mentioned here, I’m just saying what worked for me and my friends. Plus, my first and second year strategy is clearly not working anyway for the current model of SNMPTN which uses your HS grades. My lil sister however, somehow, was accepted to UGM using this way but I had no idea how she studied as I was in Bandung at that time attending ITB (sister lives in Yogyakarta).
