What is volunteering for hospice like?

I agree with everything that Jennifer wrote. I’d like to add my perspective as a licensed massage therapist and musician. I work in the U.S.I volunteer as a massage therapist for hospice patients with the local non-profit hospice group. Most of my patients are in an assisted care facility that is part of a continuing care campus. If the patient is verbal, I obtain consent before I begin. If the patient is non-verbal, I rely on the family order for massage. I do very gentle massage, called Comfort Touch (Comfort Touch), and incorporate some myofascial release in some limited situations if the patient is able to tolerate it. I also do a lavender oil hand massage. If the patient doesn’t want a massage, or the massage seems to bother the patient, then I hold their hand or just sit with them. I’ll sing for them if they want me to. In most cases, the touch seems to relax the patients and they are resting more comfortably when I am finished. As a massage therapist, I complete a massage therapy log sheet for each session. I also write notes in the patient’s medical file. In between patients, I wash my hands and use hand sanitizer.I volunteer as a singer to see individual patients on my own, under the direction of the Music Therapist. I sing a capella for the patients, a mixture of hospice songs, hymns, classical music, and popular songs. I’m currently taking ukulele lessons so I can play solo music and accompany some of the songs. I used to sing in the hospice group’s Threshold Choir, but have discontinued due to scheduling issues. For each session, I complete a basic log sheet.I submit the log sheets to the hospice group so they can track the number of hours and type of volunteer work.I find both roles to be extremely fulfilling, in that I’m able to use my skills to bring comfort (from massage) and joy (from music) to people preparing for their final journey. I am currently taking a break while I deal with depression, having found that the depression makes it harder for me to deal with patients in difficult situations (particularly if they are non-verbal and upset). The hospice group has quarterly sharing sessions for the Comfort Touch and Reiki practitioners, and massage therapists. At those sessions, we discuss issues that came up during sessions for an hour (which counts as continuing education), and then exchange body or energy work for the second hour. The support from this group is very helpful.I’m looking forward to continuing my massage and music volunteering later this year.

Which form of exercise has the least long-term negative impact on your body?

Walking is the best overall exercise that has the least negative effects on the body. It is low impact on your joints but can be very effective. Walking is great for people that are both beginners or more advanced.Walking Log Sheets

What is the strangest thing you've seen in a cemetery?

When you work the night shift, part of the duty is to patrol through the grave yard to help reduce damage to head stones and other property in the area. This particular night was about three weeks following a murder that had taken place about twenty yards from the entrance to the grave yard, the murder was still believed to be an accident, since our alcoholic Sheriff investigated it late at night, and he was ALWAYS intoxicated by 7 PM, and we all knew that (he was at that time also the Chief of Police) The murder was that of a wonderful lady who worked the night shift at the liquor store in town, and we all knew her well, as she kept a pot of coffee on for we cops, so we would stop by for a cup on our patrol, she just felt better when one of us was in the store. So she was found dead in her car, at a RR crossing on the gravel road that lead past the Golf Club, and the adjoining grave yard. That night, around 2:15 AM, the time is burned in my brain, along with it being written in my notebook and my log sheet for that night. I was on the back side of the grave yard, near where we had just laid what was left of that young lady after her body was burned beyond recognition in the car which was set ablaze at that crossing. I had my window open, it was a hot, sweltering night, the moon was as full as I have ever seen it, and the night insects were making a real song of it. As I turned and shined the patrol’s spot light around the headstones, I heard a loud voice scream NO, HELP, MURDER - man I liked to jumped out of my skin at that, I shined the spotlight back and forth, seeking the source of that ladies voice, I knew it sounded falsifier, it was the night clerk who was buried near by, my spot light reflected off the glowing figure of a lady she ran down the back of the cemetery and dissipated behind a head stone. I jumped from the car and ran to the head stone, but there was nobody there, then I saw, behind the headstone, was a newly dug grave, where we had buried Cathy, the night clerk. Now there was a lot of controversy over her death, in fact unsolved mysteries even came to town and did a show on the case. The Sheriff lost the next election, and drank himself to death over the next two years, and six years later the new Sheriff opened the case once more, focusing on her husband. The Husband knew that the investigators were to be in Montana, where he had moved after the funeral, so he drove out into a pasture and put a bullet in his head. The case was closed as solved, no prosecution needed.I have only shared this story with my shrink, and that was many years ago, so now you know the rest of the story, as they say. Cops know a lot, because our jobs take us where normal folk only talk of going
