I’m embarrassed to post this, but I spent a solid ten minutes staring at this thing and this is all I could do.I considered editing out the ones I got sorely wrong, but I decided to leave it all there so y’all can see exactly how little I know about Africa.So what did I get wrong?Er— most of the parts I labeled were OK.Okay, some of them were. A few.Out of what I labeled, here’s what was wrong:Gabon. I knew it was wrong and I went with it anyway. I was looking for “Gambia”. That’s the word I couldn’t remember. Once I saw “Gambia” on another map, I screamed “SENEGAL OH MY GOD”. Forgot about that one, too.Liberia. I’m ashamed. I knew it was over there. I couldn’t remember which it was. I also knew the Ivory Coast was over there but I couldn’t recall where it was, either. Dammit.Equatorial Guinea. I was totally bullshitting, but I was damn close.Uganda. I got in the right neighborhood, but once again, not the right one. Sorry, Tanzania.Congo. I knew that had a different name (Democratic Republic of Congo) but I couldn’t get there. I had the right idea.What went right:Niger and Nigeria. Those always stuck out in my brain.Somalia. Because it’s pointy.Kenya. I just looked for the pentagonal country.South Africa, because everyone knows where South Africa is.Lesotho. No clue why I know that.Madagascar. I watched the movies.Egypt. Another that most people know.I’m really sorry, African continent. I could name a total of eight countries. That’s not good.Eurocentric education at its finest, I’d say.

I don’t.Let me explain.I was raised in the village named Ngoreme, in the outskirts of Serengeti National Park in Tanzania. Poachers were part of our community as we shared the border with the park. We knew them by names, their families etc.Our community hated poachers because the village will get frequent raids from the Government forces or game rangers looking for them. People will get hurt in these operations and sometimes innocent people will die.In my experience, poachers are not your normal peasants looking for something to eat inside the park. These are people who go hunting carrying the AK47’s, RPG, Submachine guns and of course the powerful .458 or .375.These are some part of their operations, forget animals poaching part for a moment.A village leader tried to prevent local poachers from killing animals in Tarangire National Park, he became their next target.A British pilot who was murdered by poachers. Roger Gower was shot while in the air tracking poachers in Serengeti National Park.A South African, Wayne Lotter, faced the same fate - murdered by poachers.63 headcounts for 2018 - again, poachers.So now you get the idea of why people are celebrating what animals did to this scumbag -poachers don’t kill animals only- the reason we have a shoot to kill policy for poachers in my country.EDIT 1:Botswana, another peaceful African country like Tanzania, has a similar policy for poachers - shoot-to-kill.EDIT 2: Another day at the office.
