PDF Editor FAQ

If you were to give one piece of advice to a high school freshman, what would it be?

I’ll be a Senior starting very soon. It feels just like yesterday when I was in your position. Welcome to High School! Get ready to embark on your four year journey.HIGH SCHOOL ISN’T SCARY. (At least for me it wasn’t, and that’s coming from the most introverted and quiet person ever) High School is about finding yourself, discovering who you are, and maturing. Building character. Middle School was just awkward. Freshman year might be a little awkward at first, but by the middle of second semester, you’ll have it down.THERE IS NO FRESHMAN FRIDAY (Unless you go to school with a bunch of assholes, then run.) Upperclassmen don’t care about Freshmen. We’re too concerned with our own circles, work, and our College Apps. In fact, at my school, the upperclassmen were nice and befriended the freshmen. You’ll only get hell from sophomores because that’s just a rite of passage (congrats you’re not fresh meat anymore!)DEVELOP SELF EFFICACY AND INTRINSIC MOTIVATION. DO YOUR WORK. I CANNOT stress this ENOUGH. Please please PLEASE do your work. If you miss one day, you will miss things. Stay on top of your work. Teachers love that and they will be more sympathetic as far as grading and deadlines with you. (Once, I drew ‘David’ by Michaelangelo in place of a quiz I missed and got a 110%. No lie. IT HELPED A LOT!!). It’s best to motivate yourself and think of homework, classwork, and studying as second nature. That way, you can do fun things without being weighed down with the burden that is school work.BUILD A STRONG FOUNDATION THIS YEAR. Freshman year is really important. Because it sets the foundation for your transcript and your GPA, and having a good GPA 1st & 2nd Sem of Freshman year will really save you. ESPECIALLY if you fall under a bit during Sophomore year (Junior year is important too, but I’ll explain that shortly). Plus, your classes this year should be relatively easy. That is, unless you’re taking a bunch of advanced classes and APs.JOIN CLUBS AND PARTICIPATE Clubs and school stuff may seem lame, and “uncool” but I totally promise you it isn’t. Join random clubs. For instance, my school has a KPOP club. When you join clubs, you’ll make friends of all different classes and they’re really fun. Sometimes it’s like a close knit family. Getting involved in school activities is great too (as well as clubs) because you make friends and connections and also this will look excellent on your college resume. And get involved in the community, volunteer.JUNIOR YEAR IS NOT A MYTH. What you hear about Junior year is true. It’s stressful as hell. Personally, I was okay, but that’s because I was proactive. When you get ready to register for classes for Junior year: choose wisely. Don’t load up on APs and honors courses because they’ll look good. Also another tip: Dont take an AP class you won’t like. You won’t pay attention and it’ll be TORTURE. Take your SAT and ACT EARLY so you don’t have to worry about it Junior or Senior year. And do not skip the PSAT, actually try. It’s great practice.TALK TO YOUR COUNSELLOR ABOUT COLLEGE EARLY. THIS will help you SO MUCH. You do not want to be a Junior or Senior stressing about college. It’s best to start early and make some moves now, so you won’t be bombarded with everything else later. Additionally, this will look good on your part and show you have initiative and you’re serious about academics.YOU HAVE FREE WILL — YOU’RE FREEER THAN YOU THINK. When I got to High School, I was a nervous wreck. I thought teachers were going to be mean and strict and I thought I was going to have to grow up and be an adult. Wrong. The teachers freshman year are actually very nice (except for a few bad apples). They know you’re trying to transition from Middle School to High School, so they’ll cut you some slack. (But that will slowly fade as the year goes on though just so you’re aware.) But you can do anything in High School. You’re not under scrutiny like Middle School. Freshman year you might, because everyone is immature, but that sense of HS freedom is still there. You’ll definitely feel it once you get to the end of your Sophomore year. You can do whatever you want, did you know I started a research project about the mental health of students at my school? I sent it to my principal and now my school has a thing called “reduced course load” and allows students to exempt their finals based on seniority.(SAD BUT TRUE) YOUR MIDDLE SCHOOL FRIENDS ARE NOT YOUR FRIENDS ANYMORE. It’s a harsh truth. Once you get to HS, the friends you had in MS will slip away and begin to change. But that is okay. You can make friends with ANY and EVERYbody. Even some of the seniors (if they’re not asses, but majority of them are actually very nice to freshman at my school at least..). Extend your circle and put yourself out there. If you’re like me and super introverted and a recluse, CLUBS. Clubs will SAVE YOU.HAVE FUN. Even though High School is really important because it builds the foundation for the course of your life and is a time of imperative growth, it’s important to have fun. There are days where you don’t need to take things as serious. Slack off. Skip class. Do the stereotypical things that teenagers do. It’s okay to get in a little trouble. (but not too much bc you need to get into college and stay on the right track.) I remember one time my friend and I snuck out of school right before the pep rally and we went to a restaurant down the street and spent the evening together. That was the best Friday ever. In fact, we made it a tradition. We even skipped class together in the bathroom so we wouldn’t have to take tests. That was hella fun. Plus the freedom of being able to drive yourself home? (Even though you need parents permission if you’re under 18) IS AMAZING. All in all, there will be some Monday’s that feel like Fridays, and Fridays that feel like Wednesdays. Enjoy yourself, these are the last four years you have before you enter the real world. Make it count, and make it worth it.Even though your first year won’t be traditional, I hope you still get to have a High School experience. It’s something you DONT want to miss out on. (P.S: Go to homecoming freshman year. You don’t need a date, go with friends. It’s super fun I promise you.)Sincerely, a High School Senior (C/O 2021) :)
