For those of you who have driven the entire Pan-American Highway, what was your favorite stretch?The mysterious Pan-American Highway is a sensational adventure that unofficially covers 14,918 miles (24,008 km), an extra 2.7-mile ferry ride in Argentina, and 14 countries from the top of Alaska to the bottom of Argentina. The road travels 9,018 miles (14,513 km) above the equator, and 5,900 miles (9,495 km) below it.The highway has two major halves that are unable to be connected through the swamps of Panama’s Darien Gap which are absolutely impassible by vehicle. The upper section of the Pan-American runs 8,141 miles (or 8,332 miles depending on your path) from Alaska to Panama. The lower section runs 5,600 miles (9,012 km) from Colombia to Argentina before hitting a dead end, then continuing after that 2.7-mile ferry ride for a very short, final 300-mile (483-km) disjoint section of highway that ends in a parking lot at the bottom of the world.Part 1, north of the Darien Gap:This epic road begins in Prudhoe Bay, Alaska, at the intersection of Lake Colleen Drive and the Dalton Highway (70.206522 N, 148.440247 W). An unheralded, ordinary stop sign on a gravel road marks the starting point, no signage advertising the incredible journey I was about to undertake. The average high temperature during the winter in this part of Alaska is -13 degrees Fahrenheit (-25 C), while July averages only 54 F (12 C) for the high.(The Pan-American Highway’s northern terminus at Colleen Lake in Alaska)The road ambles through Alaska, finally reaching pavement in about 100 miles. It takes you through remote parts of Canada, follows the interstate throughout the United States, and then runs through Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, and Panama before reaching a dead end in the town of Yaviza, Panama, at the edge of Darien National Park. If you drive option 1 below, the upper Pan-American Highway covers 7,956 miles (12,804 km) in North America all the way to the Panama Canal, and an extra 185 miles (298 km) in South America before hitting the impassible Darien Gap. A couple of adventurers have crossed it using boats and various methods that did not involving actual driving, but nobody can drive through this thick jungle where pathways do not exist.(At the dead end in Yaviza, Panama, you won’t get a car across this pedestrian bridge, nor the river, nor the 66 miles of swampland and thick jungle ahead before the highway continues)As the Yellowhead Highway enters Edmonton and intersects Anthony Henday Drive (53.572036 N, 113.676981 W), you have a major decision to make. There are two acceptable routes of the Pan-American Highway through the rest of Canada and into the United States, both paths reconvening in San Antonio, Texas.Option 1: Exit Yellowhead Highway onto Anthony Henday Drive and head for Calgary on your way to an 8,141-mile (13,102-km) journey to the bottom of Panama (utilizing I-15 to Butte, I-90 through Billings, I-25 through Denver, Albuquerque, and El Paso, and finally I-10 to San Antonio, before reconnecting with option 2).Option 2: Back in Edmonton, if you stay straight to remain on Yellowhead Highway and drive to Saskatoon, you’ll have an 8,332-mile (13,409-km) trek through Thunder Bay, Minneapolis, Kansas City, and Fort Worth.The fastest route from Prudhoe Bay, Alaska, to Yaviza, Panama, is actually 7,367 miles (11,856 km), so the Pan-American Highway certainly isn’t the most direct path, adding 774 miles (1,246 km) to option 1, and more to option 2. But what an adventure either way!From San Antonio, the two routes agree again, where I-35 takes you from San Antonio to Laredo where you’ll begin winding your way through Latin America. The road eventually departs Central America for South America as Highway 1 crosses the Panama Canal.Here are my top 10 favorite stretches of the upper half of the Pan-American Highway driving on Option 1 above (which is my personal preference):1.) Alaska - Atigun Pass on the Dalton Highway (mile marker 244)At 4,739 feet (1,444 meters) above sea level, it’s the highest pass in all of Alaska maintained by the state, keeping the snow cleared during the winter so the ice road truckers can get through. You’re still 131 miles north of the Arctic Circle sign on the highway.2.) Canada - Muncho Lake Provincial Park along the Alaska HighwayThe views of Muncho Lake in British Columbia and the surrounding mountains is simply stunning from the Pan-American Highway in this region!3.) Guatemala - Lake Atitlan along Highway 1In a bend of the highway (14.752058 N, 91.170388 W) just south of Sololá, Guatemala, you’ll see the most wonderful views of picturesque Lake Atitlan.4.) Canada - Kluane Lake area along the Alaska HighwayThis place is so scenic, it deserves two photographs. As the Alaska Highway skirts Kluane Lake in the Yukon, the scenery in either winter or summer is spectacular!5.) Alaska - Robertson River Bridge on the Alaska HighwayBuilt in 1944, this 1,980-foot (604-meter) bridge will transport you across the Robertson River (63.495833 N, 143.835389 W) through otherworldly landscapes, even when it’s not snowing.6.) Canada - Alaska Highway crossing the Donjek RiverThis photo from Google Street View gives you a taste of just how scenic the valley is along the Donjek River in the Yukon (61.678761 N, 139.753309 W).7.) Mexico - Mexican Federal Highway 40 between Monterrey and SaltilloThere is something very intriguing and mysterious about driving through the mountainous region along the Saltillo Highway in the state of Nueva Leon, Mexico. You’re 568 miles (914 km) from Mexico City, the largest metropolis along the entire stretch of the Pan-American Highway.8.) Canada - Alaska Highway crossing the White RiverThe White River snakes through the Yukon, passing under an unnamed bridge at 61.988389 N, 140.558690 W.9.) Canada - Yukon-Alaska border on the Alaska HighwayJust after crossing into Canada, a beautiful unnamed lake (62.614795 N, 141.000226 W) lies on the north side of the Alaska Highway welcoming you to Canada.10.) Panama - Pan-American Highway in the town of YavizaAlthough it may not be scenic, there is something special about driving through the tiny town of Yaviza at the end of the world, knowing these primitive dirt roads are just 765 feet from the terminus of the upper half of the Pan-American Highway. At this point, all those miles of paved highway are reduced to wild rurality.(The sign indicates this is the end of the line for the upper portion of the Pan-American HIghway, with a mention of Alaska being the northern terminus)NOTE: My favorite North American place along the Pan-American Highway is actually St. Mary Lake in Glacier National Park (below), but you cannot see it very well from Highway 89 in Montana. You’ll have to take a 4.4-mile detour off the highway to get a picture like this, which is worth it! But in this Quora answer, we’re only considering stretches of the actual highway, not side trips.Part 2, south of the Darien Gap:Picking up the highway in Turbo, Colombia, you’ll have another 6,777 miles (10,907 km) of driving and a 2.7-mile ferry across the Strait of Magellan before arriving in Ushuaia, Argentina. Along the way, you’ll pass through Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Chile, and Argentina. Here are my top 10 favorite stretches of the lower half of the Pan-American Highway.1.) Argentina - Aconcagua Provincial Park along Route 7Aconcagua is simply breathtaking, and even the views from the Pan-American Highway without entering the park will be jaw dropping.2.) Argentina - Tierra del Fuego National ParkThis is the end of the road, the terminus of the Pan-American Highway in Tierra del Fuego, one of the most stunning places on earth. The Google Maps image below shows the point at which the great Pan-American Highway becomes a mere parking lot. High temperatures during January are 57 F (14 C), and only in June and July does the nightly temperature average 30 F (-1 C).(The parking lot at the end of the Pan-American Highway at the bottom of Argentina)3.) Peru - Playa Tanaka along Highway 1 SouthIn Peru’s coastal desert, you’ll find Lomas de Atiquipa, a protected area that serves as an oasis in the middle of a barren land, and stunning views of the Pacific Ocean from there down to Playa Tanaka and beyond. The next 150 miles feature isolated beaches you’ll have all to yourself, and one of the most stunning views I’ve ever seen from the hairpin turn at GPS coordinates 16.450322 S, 73.114692 W.4.) Peru - Pacific Coast between Las Zorras and GramadalLocated 191 miles north of Lima, Highway 1N is simply indescribable, a cross between driving across another planet, passing along a gorgeous Pacific Coast beach, traversing a remote desert, and immersing oneself in some sort of modernist painting. Argentina - The town of UshuaiaUshuaia is one of my favorite cities in the world, so of course I favor the final stretch of the Pan-American Highway that passes through this town, signaling the end of your adventure at the bottom of the world.6.) Ecuador - Imbabura Volcano along Ecuador Highway 35From the highway near Lake San Pablo, you’ll see a pretty decent view of Imbabura Volcano. Although this photograph from a helicopter tour gives you a better perspective. At this point, you’re only 23 miles away from a taking photograph where the Pan-American Highway crosses the equator!7.) Argentina - Lake Fagnano along Highway 3Pictures do not compare to the real-life views of Lake Fagnano as you approach the terminal town of Ushuaia, Argentina.8.) Colombia - Cativo Antioquia lookout along Highway 62There is something absolutely majestic about the mountainous pass north of Santa Fe de Antioquia, Colombia (6.612603 N, 75.846935 W), as well as the forested area coming up on Highway 25B adjacent to the Cauca River.9.) Chile - Pan de Azucar National Park along Highway 5You’ll be able to see a tiny bit of this national park along the Pan-American Highway, a gorgeous part of Chile’s coastline!10.)
