PDF Editor FAQ

As an old gamer, do you feel greatly disappointed with video games nowadays?

Nope, I've never been happier with video games.I'm not immune to nostalgia, I play my old games and rebuy many of them on new systems, I play them over and over and despite that… or maybe because of that, I appreciate new games all the more. Games have improved immeasurably in just a few decades and when you regularly play the old classics you really appreciate the improvements that developers have made over the years.I used to play RPGs with a notebook by my side, I'd write down any information that seemed important, notes on walls, odd looking landmarks, NPC gossip, etc. I'd solve most of the puzzles on paper and often draw crude maps of complex dungeons. That was pretty cool back in the day, and I do miss that level of involvement sometimes but then when I switch on a game like The Witcher 3 and I have an in game journal that records all important information/conversations, a mini-map for exploration, a quest marker for navigation… I wonder how I ever managed without this stuff.Yeah, games in the past could be much more difficult, but a whole lot of that was because there were no in game systems to smooth out the tedious stuff, a lot of my old games didn't even have a world map, let alone a minimap/radar. You didn't have a built in journal to update your quest progress, you had to flip through your hastily scrawled notes (if you could even read them…) and hope you attached the clue to the right quest line. You didn't have a quest marker, you had to remember the names of people and places and remember what they wanted and how to get there.I don't think games are too easy, they're accessible now to more skill levels. I find most people that complain about the ease of games “nowadays” haven't tried switching the difficulty up to hard. Thing is, normal is designed to be challenging (but still accessible) for new players or people that are new to games, it's not about being a tough guy, it's about tailoring your experience to suit your skill level. Old gamers tend to have a higher base skill level purely from experience, they're already familiar with the basics and many gaming conventions so a difficulty level designed for new players isn't always a great fit.As an old gamer, I really appreciate all the time saving systems that developers have included for me and so I don't get bored, I play most games on hard because I find normal doesn't challenge me enough to remain interesting. The games I play now are better than I could have imagined they'd be when I was tapping away on my Super Nintendo and they just keep getting better and more pleasurable to play as new helpful features are added to take away those minor issues that plagued older games.

How were Vikings able to enter berserker state?

There are multiple theories as to why certain people in the sagas were able to go berserk. Part of the problem is that we have so little real information on the subject. Mushrooms are a possibility. So is hensbane, which was long used in certain regions of Europe in making beer until they started to use hops instead. Since so much is unknown, I would like to add some insight from a shamanic perspective. Please note that, in the sagas, berserkers tend to cluster in families. Also, it is generally not portrayed as a positive thing for someone to be. And berserkers are associated with Odin, who in turn is associated with things like shamanism, being mad (in both senses), and ecstatic states. Also, despite the name, both bears and wolves can be associated with berserk states, depending on the source.I come from a family with a heritage of two things that I think may be related to each other: inborn talent for shamanic abilities and a temper where we run the risk of blacking out to fight and not waking up again until the person putting us in danger is no longer moving. This tendency goes back for generations and often the people who had it were the same ones who followed a religious calling. This may not be surprising, since one could interpret Samson from the Bible as a kind of Jewish berserker (e.g. Judges 14:6, 14:19, 15:14 and similar passages). In one real life case, my father and his brother were attacked by a drunk man with a knife. When my father came to, his brother was trying to stop him from stabbing the man with his own knife after having beaten him unconscious. Those of us with the tendency go into trance more easily than most people, which likely eases the transition. In the right kind of situation, I suspect that even just a bit of something mind-altering would suffice to ease the transition. However, I can only speculate about that because I have never taken anything mind-altering. Even with alcohol, enough of it just puts me to sleep: my personality doesn't change at all. But a steady drum beat can put me into trance inside of five minutes, if I do nothing to stop it.Luckily, the only people my father killed were when he was a soldier in Vietnam. My older sister and I inherited the trait and have had to learn all of the warning signs to avoid accidents. Also, luckily, no one ended up dead in the process of us learning to tame the tendency, although sometimes we managed to get control back barely in time. And people did get hurt, but luckily never badly enough to end up in the hospital. What I tell people is to watch my face. If I'm angry and frowning or look stern, you're safe. If I'm angry and start grinning from ear to ear like a wolf baring its teeth, then please help me to deescalate or at least leave me alone. If it's an emergency case, then please freeze and don't meet my eyes. I don't want to hurt you and you don't want to be hurt, but I won't remember that until I come to again. That said, I'm mostly safe nowadays. Once you've crossed the line between sanity and madness often enough, you learn your way around enough to see the landmarks in time to stop. But I can imagine someone in a more warlike age learning how to control the tendency in a completely different direction in order to use it while doing battle. One side-effect of belonging to Odin is that at least people are more likely to take it seriously when I ask them to please follow those steps. I don't want the recipient of my anger to be a human instead of a door, of which I have completely destroyed four, the first one when I was only eight years old. The last time I blacked out was in a therapy session where I was role-playing that a pillow was a certain person toward whom I was carrying a lot of anger, but who was long since dead. When I came to, I had punched the pillow so badly that I had destroyed it and my knuckles were skinned. I felt no pain whatsoever until I awoke again. The transition out the other end is like gradually awakening from a dream and realizing that you are actually exhausted and in pain, but not really understanding why until you are awake enough to piece together what must have happened. For the record, my two main totems are both birds, but I have shared my body with a wolf spirit before, such as when my younger sister's totem wanted to speak with her and she was not listening. Most of the effects did not surprise me, but one that did was the increased production of saliva. I don't know why, but at least for me that seems to be part of that transition. My theory is that there are more people with the traits necessary to go berserk than realize it or would necessarily even think of it by that name. For many years, I had no word to describe it and just tried to explain to people that it's not like normal anger. It's like someone else, but possibly my instincts, takes control of my body and it's all I can do to take control back before anyone gets hurt. The human body is capable of amazing things when pushed to extremes, when adrenaline and endorphins kick in, the latter of which attach to the same receptors in the brain as drugs like morphine. Think like the stories of mothers who are able to lift cars off of their children. And some people have the version of the fight-or-flight response that can allow them to temporarily rage like beasts. I think the potential evolutionary advantages of such a response speak for themselves. However, as with immune systems, it's advantageous for a given population to maintain more than one type of default response.
