I have to correct this question slightly.Piketty’s central thesis is not about the return of capital being higher than the growth rate of income — it’s about the return of capital being higher than the overall economic growth.It’s a mathematical fact that if r > g remains true over a long enough time-period, then the end-result is that a tiny group of extremely wealthy people own everything and have all the income, while the distance between them and the rest of humanity grows to an extreme degree.As a (purely hypothetical example) imagine this scenario:Over a period of a century, the economy overall grows by 2% per year, while the returns on invested capital is 4% per year. After this century is over, the economy has expanded by a factor of 7 while capital invested throughout the century has expanded by a factor of 50.So while the economy got 7 times larger, wealthy people got 50 times wealthier. The only way for this math to be possible, is for MOST people to get a smaller and smaller fraction of the total income.If capital income grows quicker than the economy does, then other income (i.e. salaries and wages) must grow slower than the economy does. In other words, income-differences must go up.And while that’s mathematically possible, I think there’s a upper limit on how large a fraction of humanity’s production we’re willing to hand over to a tiny elite of capital-owners.It’s probably fine if the 1% gets 5% of humanity’s total production. But how would you feel about it if 50% of everything made were given to that 1% ? How about 90% ? 99.99% ?It is, I think, obvious that this isn’t sustainable indefinitely. That leaves only two questions:For how long is it sustainable?What are we going to do to avoid approaching and crossing the limit of sustainability?
