PDF Editor FAQ

Is it possible that there are suburbs which exist in big city areas that actually possess more old farmland than suburban homes or businesses?

The definition of suburb is pretty imprecise and where, exactly a suburb becomes an exurb is equally imprecise. It’s very common, in a Metropolitan statistical area - Wikipedia. - that you’d have some farmland and/or semi-rural areas.Philadelphia is a great example. The areas shaded in yellow are part of the MSA. The layer of gray shading shows the urbanized areas (built up areas of city or suburb.) You won’t find many farms at all in the gray shaded areas. In other words, you can clearly see the parts of the metro area that are less developed. Here’s another look at the same area. The dark green at the core is showing the MSA while the counties on the fringe that are shown in lighter shades of green are part of the CSA.But if you look along the western side of Chester County for example, scenes like this are common:I cribbed the above photo from a Chester County real estate website but this photo below was taken by me a few years ago from my parent’s backyard, also in Chester County. They’ve since moved but they lived in a typical, suburban subdivision and the farm behind them was an Amish dairy operation. This was taken on Thanksgiving day but in the summer months the field between the camera and the cows would’ve been filled with corn.Anyway, moving east over to Burlington County in NJHuge areas of it are completely uninhabited but it’s still technically part of the metro area. And even when you get closer to the urbanized areas it’s still a mix of farms, forests, and suburbs. A town like Medford (outlined in red) in Burlington County is probably best described as an exurb and leans towards being mostly farms and forests even though it has a historic town and plenty of newer subdivisions around it. Towns (villages, really) like Tabernacle or Southampton is definitely mostly farms and forest - but all still technically in the metro area.

Is it better for cats to have a companion?

Is it better for cats to have a companion? This is a fascinating and somewhat controversial subject with cat people weighing in on both sides with different points of view.IMO, the answer is a resounding YES, most cats do benefit from a cat companion, in addition to their human one; although, if a kitten is raised alone with only a human being who adores it, they seem to adapt and usually spend hours sleeping (as witnessed on the nanny cam in homes of my friends who have only one cat) when their person is not home with them.My Godmother was Jean Rumney, DVM (Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine), who despite being severely afflicted with polio as a child, was the first Canadian women to graduate from Ontario Veterinary College (OVC), Guelph, Ontario, Canada 🇨🇦 in the year 1939. Jean’s older brother Wilfred Rumney, DVM, established Blue Cross Animal Hospital in Hamilton, Ontario and Jean joined him upon graduating and continued working in their small animal clinic until her death.I was christened in the church when I was six months old. My Godmother’s christening present was a neutered male Siamese, already named Sam, who also was also six months old. Sam, apparently, slept with me in my crib and was my very best friend for 13 years. I fondly remember Dr. Rumney, who I always called “Jo-Jean”. She died in 1974, the year I turned 18 — I guess God knew that I no longer needed her to be my Godmother. She was a very strong, positive, loving role model and influence in my otherwise unhappy adoptive childhood experience. I’ve been told my first spoken word was “Sam”, although no one is alive now to actually verify the fact — just a vague memory I have of being told this by my beloved Grannie Anne.Above is a little clay fired statue I made of my Sammie when I was 17 years old (while taking pottery lessons at the Burlington Potters Guild). The above photo is of my third cat to be named Sam (the second rescue to be so named) washing her paw at the age of two in 2005.Samantha (Sammie) was 14 years old living in the farmhouse with Harley when Little Kitty joined our family 5 years ago. Little Kitty came from a completely feral community consisting of 20+ cats. The two black cats bonded within 6 months — it was almost 2 years before I could actually touch Little Kitty. He would sometimes sleep on my bed with Sammie. He would lie against my leg, but did still not like being touched or held. Within three days of Sammie being euthanized last Christmas (due to a cancerous stomach tumour at the age of 18), Little Kitty came and sat on my lap, purring and wanting to cuddle. I broke into tears — I believe Sammie’s soul now resides within Little Kitty. (I did not really believe in this theory before witnessing the aforementioned behaviour.)Little Kitty and the young Sammie looked identical. The next rescue was White Sox pictured below.Little Kitty completely ignored Soxie until 3 days after Sammie was euthanized. The latest rescue kitty, Canadian Thanksgiving Day, 2019, was a feral kitten who I named Oranje Poes (which is Dutch for Orange Cat).Soxie and Oranje Poes have absolutely bonded.Feral cats typically live in colonies and I believe that they are happier with one or two feline companions.

How much does it cost to raise a newborn the first year?

Both answers here are good, but they focus on round averages and extremes. I’ll give you a more personal story, with tips on how to get “the average stuff” without overspending, driving yourself nuts looking for coupons, or compromising safety buying used car seats.EDIT: forgot to link to this great baby cost estimator at BabyCenter | Expert info for pregnancy & parenting: First-Year Baby Costs CalculatorI’ll make a few assumptions:The price of the hospital delivering the child is covered by your insurance or out of scopeYour pricing is no worse than mine (New York city metro)Your costs do need to account for big ticket items like cribs that outlast a yearYou’re open to breastfeedingGiven all that, my number is $2000 without child care, and $10,800 with.here’s how it breaks down:Food: for the first 4–5 months you only need to budget for a breast pump to allow Mom to be away from baby for more than a few hours. I was very lucky to get mine covered by insurance, but you can buy a used Medela Pump in Style for about $50 and buy new tubing/shields for $25 on Amazon. You don’t need a bottle warmer - just fill a saucepan with hot water and voila. After that, you should budget about $1 a day for baby food (assuming you shop the sales, make your own sometimes, taper off baby food in the last months, and can get your price down to $.33/pouch). For bottles, $40 should cover you for the year if you aren’t concerned about the brand.Sleep arrangements/nursery. You can find great sets on Craigslist, but if you want new, Walmart sells a brand called babymod that is nontoxic and very reasonable. Price for a crib, changing table with pad, and dresser for nursery: $250. Add in a set of decorations and crib sheets you like: $50. Grab a nice carpet for $20 online from walmart (look for the “kids room” carpets, 5x7’s can be as low as $15). Put your baby in the crib from day 1, or cosleep, and you’re good to go. Consider spending $20 on the “safe and secure sleeper” from summer infant - it’s portable and can be put in the crib when baby is really tiny as well as used for travel and cosleeping.Clothes: budget about $15/month for clothes. This assumes that you are gifted a few newborn outfits, and that for the first month or two it will be more than that because they grow fast and then taper off over time, with about $30 for every “new size” trip. Stick to simple clothes you can mix and match, shop the clearance rack at places like old navy, and this should be doable. Check out places like tj maxx or Burlington for winter coats if you want them new.Blankets/bibs/burp cloths: buy a few muslin blankets, these are very versatile and can be used for swaddling, covering a seat while baby sleeps, breastfeeding privacy, you name it. Add in a few burp cloths, just enough to get you through a wash cycle, same for bibs. $20 should do it.Accessories: you’ll need a diaper bag. Don’t go nuts - it can be just a backpack. Don’t spend more than $20. Go to the dollar store and buy a formula carrier, snack pod, wipe holder, brush/comb, 2 teethers, a box of outlet covers, a pack of plastic forks/spoons, a pacifier, and mini clippers for baby’s nails - $10. Just shower with baby and avoid the baby tub.Baby gear: you basically need three things: a car seat, a stroller, and a bouncer or swing to put baby down while you do other things. I’d recommend also snagging a play yard and a baby carrier. You can get a decent car seat/stroller combo for $125 with a graco clickconnect car seat, which has high safety ratings. Bright starts sells a bouncer for $20. IKEA has a nice play yard for $25. And infantino has some great babywearing carriers for $25. If you buy something like the “lite rider” or “citi mini” which are relatively small and light you can avoid paying extra to buy a second “light” stroller.Diapers/wipes/etc: $30/month for diapers with Amazon mom (try huggies snug n dry or walmart parents choice or luvs). $15/month for wipes (walmart or huggies). Diaper rash cream and baby shampoo can be found in the dollar store. You’ll also want infant Tylenol on hand and hand sanitizer.Toys: second hand stores, dollar stores, clearance. You really don’t need much at all the first year. A rattle or two - I’d recommend this snake thing from infantino that loops on your car seat, some blocks, a few books, a teddy bear or two, a ball, stacking circles, and a walker. $100 for the year, max.All that comes to $1800, but build in some padding and budget $2000.Child care: full time daycare is expensive. There’s no two ways about it. We were able to find reputable day care for about $800/month but we considered ourselves lucky. I am assuming Mom takes a month off work so you’d need 11 months - $8800So there you go! Babies are indeed pricey, but you don’t need to spend $1000 on a stroller or $5000 on your nursery to have nice things!
