I was never in the Army, however I am a Marine. That sentence alone can start the answer to your question. Once a Marine, always a Marine. The building of Marine Corps esprit de corps starts the first day of boot camp. It is extremely hard to define. Many military groups or organizations will tell you they are the best, they are tough, they have their own esprit de corps, and doubtlessly they are tough and they do have unit pride, but they will never be United States Marines. Today is probably a great day to try and answer this question, for on this day, 78 years ago, 30,000 Marines landed on Iwo Jima. The Japanese never had a chance. They would be dug out and destroyed to the man by well trained, motivated Marines. At boot camp you are stripped of your civilian persona, you become nothing. With a shaved head and your ears ringing with your worthlessness, well trained, USMC Drill Instructors, start the process of building a US Marine. It takes time, not every boot will earn the Eagle Globe and Anchor. Many services, many countries do a great job of building an effective fighting force, but I don’t think they do it like the Marines. The rifle range is an example. Anybody can be taught to shoot a weapon. Marines are taught that their weapon is as important as they are. Check out the Marine Corps creed, “ this is my rifle, they are many like it, but this one is mine.” Marines are taught to shoot and shoot like experts. It’s not the noise the rifle makes, it’s the hits that count. The famed German Army called Marines Devil Dogs, they’d rather face anybody else. North Korean and Chinese infantry would desert when they learned they were opposing Marines. Marine Corps boot camp is probably a form of brainwashing, but it works. The days start early, and last long. Sleep becomes precious, you body and mind are challenged every day, in every way. You slowly get stronger, you slowly desire to prove to the DI’s that you can make it. You slowly want to prove to them you have what it takes. You watch men you thought would make it drop by the wayside, you start to work as a team, you begin to learn that Marines are different, we leave no one behind, we are brothers. You are indoctrinated into the history of the Corps, you learn the lingo. You start to want to be nothing else but a Marine. You start to know who Chesty Puller, Dan Daly, Smedly Butler and John Basilone are. You want to be like them. You want to be known as a Marine. If you’re persistent enough, strong enough and motivated enough you will learn you can overcome all odds and make it. When you are handed the Eagle Globe and Anchor and the Drill Instructor calls you Marine, it’ll be the best day of you life.I don’t think the Army does it the same way. Having it lived for almost 19 years which I would cherish and be proud of for life long.Let's dive in to army kids life :)Postings- We get posted every three years. This used to be fun and tiring at the same time. Imagine if I ask you to pack your whole house? Well, our moms are pro at it. We do it all the time. Home sickness, what's even that?Education- APS and KV are default options. A school where you would find people from all over the nation with diffrent culture but still nothing used to feel diffrent. Encountering students joining and leaving during mid session due to postings was every day routine for us.School Bus- Oops! oops! Our school bus seems like convoy and other people used to stare at us while going to school in that buses😂.Army cantoments- we live in army quarters aided with canteens, groceries etc. We have our own built world in Army cants where you would find anything to everything.Military Hospitals/Command Hospitals- we rarely visit any private Hospitals. One dependant card is all you need to get a treatment worth in lakhs. I wish to join AMC(Army Medical corps) too someday ❤️.Friends- you have friends from everywhere although the time spent with each is less due to recurrent postings inherently making us good at interacting and making new friends anywhere anytime.Social gathering- The parties and events are always delightful. I love attending army parties where you are expected to show your cutlery skills😂.Punctuality- All my life I have been forced to wake up at 5 am, thanks to my dad's strict rules ^_^. Manners and discipline are two attributes to be cared a lot. Thank god I live in hostel now😛 where my sleep schedule is totally under my control.Travelling- This is in our blood. 19 years and 6 schools. Also, I have been to almost all the states of our country.We diffrentiate people solely based on two criterias- Civilian and Army. Religion, caste, creed are highly immaterial to us. We take utmost pride in being part of Indian Army.Family bonding- I believe the bonding we share is much more deeper than any other. We value family time more because we have experienced separation more. I remember, when dad was posted in Jammu and he wasn't allowed to take us along because of the violence issue. I used to cry a lot every time he would go back after spending vacation with us.In a nutshell, I have had wonderful life as an Army kid. The scope of this question is such that it will take days to write about the facts related to Indian Army. It is really difficult to select some and put it in an answer. Still I have put a few:FORMATION:1. Indian Army had its inception in 1776 under the government of East India Company at Kolkata.2. Upon independence and subsequent partition of India, four of the 10 Gurkha regiments were transferred to the British Army. The rest of the British Indian Army was divided between the newly created nations of Republic of India and Republic of Pakistan.3. Assam Rifles, formed in 1835, is the oldest paramilitary force in India.4. Indian army has a horsed cavalry regiment namely, 61st Cavalry Regiment. It is among one of the last 3 such regiments in the world. The other two are Household Cavalry Mounted Regiment and the 11th Cavalry Regiment of the Moscow Military District.WARS5. Battle of Longewala was fought in December 1971 between India and Pakistan, in which just 120 Indian Soldiers with 1 jeep mounted M40 recoil-less rifle held the fort against 2000 Pakistani soldiers backed by 45 tanks and 1 mobile infantry brigade. Indian soldiers held their grounds the whole night giving the Pakistanis the impression that there were around 500 Indians soldiers. When the fire was brought from the sky by Indian Air force in the morning, Pakistani soldiers fled their positions leaving behind 34 tanks.6. 21 Sikhs bravely fought against a 10000-14000 afghans in the Battle of Saragarhi in 1897. All 21 of them lost their lives, but they fought until their last breath. After they ran out of artillery, a fierce hand-to-hand battle ensued in which around 800 Afghans were killed.7. Operation Polo was one of the first wars that the free India fought to avoid the breakup of the Indian Union. The biggest kingdom in India (Hyderabad) refused to join Indian Union and wanted to be a separate nation. 35000 Indian soldiers fought 22,000 soldiers of the Hyderabad Nizam (the then richest person in the world) and 200,000 irregulars. The war ended in just 5 days with 32 casualties on the Indian side and 3500 on the enemy side (with 4000 prisoners). Although the numbers were equally matched, the causalities for India vs the loss for Hyderabad was 1:100.8. The Portuguese ruled Goa for more than 461 years until 1961. They refused to hand over Goa to India even after the Indian independence. The locals were resisting the Portuguese, but even after many diplomatic efforts, Portugal did not alter their stand. in 1961, India with a massive force outmatched the Portuguese force 10:1 and annexed Goa in just 36 hours.SERVICES9. Military Engineer Services is the largest construction agency in the country. In times of war, MES can provide accessory services such as military roads, water and electricity supply, drainage, refrigeration, furniture, required by the Army, Navy and Air Force in India like no other agency.10. The Baily Bridge is the highest bridge in the world. It is located in the Ladakh valley between Dras and Suru rivers in the Himalayan mountains. It was built by the Indian Army in August 1982.11. Border Roads Organisation staffed from Corps of Engineers of Indian Army has constructed a large number of roads in once inaccessible areas of the Himalayas, Rajasthan and North East States thereby significantly contributing to their economic development. BRO stepped in to restore the Farkhor Air Base in Tajikistan when no private builder came forward to complete the job.SOLDIERS10. Sepoy Kamal Ram of Royal Indian Army was the youngest Indian to receive Victoria Cross for his valor in WW2 at just the age of 19.11. Top 10 Brave Soldiers of Indian Army-Top 10 AlwaysAWARDS12. The Param Vir Chakra (PVC) is India's highest military decoration awarded for the highest degree of valor or self-sacrifice in the presence of the enemy. It can be, and often has been, awarded posthumously.13. The Ashoka Chakra is the peace time equivalent of the Param Vir Chakra, and is awarded for the "most conspicuous bravery or some daring or pre-eminent valor or self-sacrifice" other than in the face of the enemy. The decoration may be awarded either to military or civilian personnel and may be awarded posthumously.MISCELLANEOUS14. Indian Army controls the highest battle ground in the world in Siachen (6000+ m). It deploys around 3000 troops round the year in Siachen at the edge of a glacier in sub-human conditions and holds a perfect record in all conflicts in that region. Cold kills more soldiers here than bullets. Indian Government spends a couple of crores every day to maintain its bases in Siachen. The temperature goes down as low as minus 50 degrees and soldiers only eat de-humidified food there.15. Arjun tanks are some of the best quality tanks present today. They are fully computerized and made in India. Its cover and attack is said to be better than 3rd Generation tanks.SPECIALITY16. Indian army has never been biased. It is one of the only government organizations in the country to recruit without any provisions for reservations based on caste, creed or religion. Candidates are selected into the army based on merit and their physical fitness.
