I am a RN and was called down to employee health for an update for a physical. You would think they would just check blood work, vaccinations, tetanus shot, TB test and a cursory physical exam. Well, I was put in the room with a student doctor who seemed new to his role, and with nobody else in the room to supervise. During the preliminary questioning it came up that I was in my first trimester of pregnancy. He somehow got me to lie down on my back to check my abdomen, and he looked at that area and exclaimed that I did not look like I was pregnant.First of all, I was on my back, so my abdomen was more or less caving in, and I was only in my first trimester and still wearing my regular clothes. It seems as though I might have been the first pregnant woman he had ever seen with an unclothed abdomen, since the look on his face was rather surprised. It was a little embarrassing to me and I just really wanted it to end.

The third person in the room often “assists” the doctor in some way, but is primarily there to act as a witness to the interaction to make certain that no inappropriate behavior takes place.Doctors do this to protect themselves in the event of litigation. Other patients with a history of sexual abuse might feel safer with a third person in the room as well. In today’s orientation and gender fluid climate one can never be certain who might be attracted to whom. This, of course, should not matter in an ideal world, as doctors should never EVER act upon their sexual impulses with a patient, but there are doctors that do, and a third person witness tends to discourage this behavior.

As so often happens here, I enjoyed Dr Chai’s answer very much. I too assume you are talking about patients unclothed.First, I have been a Trauma Surgeon for half a lifetime. In that role I can’t even imagine thinking of attraction in any way.We doctors start on our journey with physical anatomy on a cadaver. Our perception of the human form begins to change in a big way then. Later we learn about approaching the patient — something I still feel honoured to do. I’m sorry, but there’s a kind of sacred trust or bond left unsaid between patient and doctor. I don’t like to hurt people (say a bimanual pelvic exam) and I don’t want anyone to feel embarrassed; I recall with gratitude in my clinic experiences when some patients actually seemed to sense that somehow, and would relax. This turned out to be helpful, as I was able to get more information that sometimes allowed me do a little more that were helpful to the patientsIn any exam, I have always been interested in putting the person at ease. My own perception is of a known or possible disease state. Nearly all doctors are like that, and I really don't want to keep company with the few who are not - as they need to find a new line of work!
