Why does Google have 20,000 employees? Do they really need that many?

20,000? If you Google “How many employees does Google have?” the number that comes up is 72,053.I’d guess (I don’t really know) that about a third of those employees are engineers. Maybe more. Those are the people that are building Search, the Knowledge Graph, GMail, GSuite, Drive, Photos, all of the Cloud products (Compute Engine, AppEngine, Datastore, Cloud Storage, BigQuery, Firestore, Cloud Spanner, Container Engine, and many more), all of Android, Assistant, Translate, Speech, uh, YouTube (!), all of the many many Ads products (AdSense, AdWords, Google Analytics…), some large number of instant-messaging applications, the entire infrastructure of Accounts, Google Plus, Blogger, Maps, StreetView, Satellite View, hardware products like the Pixel 2 and Google Home, and crazy moonshot ideas that nobody including me knows about yet.All of those products run using an internal infrastructure that’s truly mind-boggling. Every so often one of those things becomes a product (e.g. AppEngine, BigQuery, Datastore, Cloud Storage, Cloud Spanner), but usually that’s only after we’ve been using it to run our products internally for years. All of these platforms handle astonishing amounts of data and serve ludicrous numbers of requests per second. (Think, for a minute, about what it takes to make a system where every Android user in the world can log into their Google account with sub-second latency.)When you look at the support page for GSuite or Drive, it’ll casually mention that when you store data within Google we make multiple copies of the data and store them in different physical data centers so that you can reliably get your data back even if one of the computers it lives on goes down, which sounds like no big deal unless you think about how many hundreds of millions of other people we’re making the exact same promise to. Every couple of days I learn about some team at Google that’s doing something that it never even occurred to me that we need to have people working on.Honestly, I’m surprised we employ as few people as we do.
