This manFor those who don't know him, he is the man who revolutionized menstrual heath by manufacturing low cost sanitary pads for rural India at the cost of losing his own family.. Mr Arunachalam Muruganantham. The journey started in 1998. Newly married Arunachalam found his wife Shanthi hiding something from him. He was shocked to discover what it was - rags, "nasty cloths" which she used during menstruation. When he enquired why she dint use sanitary pads, she pointed out that if she bought them, they wouldn't have money to run their family. When he enquired the price of a sanitary pad to buy one for his wife, he was shocked to know that it is being sold at a prices which is 40 times the cost of raw materials used for the same. That's when he decided to make a cheaper one himself. When he made one out of cotton and gave it to his wife to try it, she informed him that he has to wait one more month for the results. To get immediate results, he gave it to a bunch of medical college girls to review the products. He was pained to know that one girl was filling all the questionnaire in the last moment just to get rid of him.He decided to test the product himself and created a "uterus" from a football bladder by punching a couple of holes in it, and filling it with animal blood. He would collect the blood from a butcher and mix in an additive he got from another friend at a blood bank to prevent it clotting too quickly - but it didn't stop the smell. He performed various activities like walking, cycling etc under his traditional clothes, constantly pumping blood out to test his sanitary pad's absorption rates. He used to wash his bloodied clothes at a public well and the whole village concluded he had a sexual disease and has become mad. Friends crossed the road to avoid him. At the same time, his wife got fed up - and left. It was ironic that he started researching for his wife and after 18 months she left him. When he started collecting used pads to study them to perfect his design, his own mother pulled out the last straw, gave up on him and left the house. Though his wife, mother and entire village gave up on him, he dint stop his quest to manufacture low cost sanitary pads. After seeking help from professors, manufacturers etc, he was successful in building a simple user friendly Machine which could produce sanitary pads of sufficient quantity at a very low cost. He deliberately kept the design simple so that he could employ rural women to operate the machines. After 4.5 years of struggle and losing everything he once considered dear to him, he was brave enough to work on menstrual health of women (considering the taboo around the subject) and he was successful in achieving the goal he set for himself. If this man can't inspire us to fight against all the odds to achieve our goal, then who can!Below is the link to his Ted Talk where he narrates his life story:How I started a sanitary napkin revolution!
If adults had to go to compulsory education classes every ten years or at key life points, what would be the most beneficial things to teach them?
I'm profoundly against forced schooling, even for kids. So I wouldn't advocate this. But, if I lived in a dictatorship that did force adults to go to school, and someone put a gun to my head and forced me to choose a curriculum, here's what I'd pick:- How to Give Criticism: people are generally terrible at giving rigorous criticism without making nasty personal remarks. Some people don't even understand that this is possible. On Quora, when we made the rule that you're not allowed to insult the content of someone's post (part of the Be Nice Be Respectful policy), many said, "Well, then rigorous debate is impossible." That's untrue, but I sympathize with people who believe it, because we're generally taught (via example) that you critique by being nasty. ("This is the worse paper I've ever read!") So people only see two possibilities: bitter mockery or saccharine, rainbows-and-flowers niceness. In the class, students would have to pick something the don't like (a TV show, a book, or whatever) and give it a detailed, strong, logical critique without getting nasty about it. They would fail if they pulled their punches or became insulting. I imagine it would take some people a while to figure out how to do this.- How to Take Criticism: first, students would be told that if a critic makes personal remarks, they don't have to take it. They should just walk away. But in the case of respectful criticism, they would learn to just listen without constantly saying, "yes, but..." and that when they speak to the critic, they should only do so in order to get clarification, so that they understand the point the critic is making.- How to Partake in a Civil Conversation: all conversations don't have to be civil, but people should know how to engage with others respectfully when it's appropriate. And they should be able to put that knowledge into practice. I would like everyone to master these skills: Marcus's Rules Of Order For Himself (Which He Invites You To Follow)- How to Learn: People need to learn how to learn. Once they can do that, we can pretty much dispense with all other topics. In this class, student will become self-sufficient and know how to get the info and skills they need. I cover some of that here: Marcus Geduld's answer to What is the good way of learning?- How to Harness Failure as a Learning Tool: this is an extension of the previous class. It's so important, it merits a class on its own: I cover that, with some quotes from other educators, here: Marcus Geduld's answer to Mind Tips and Hacks: If you were creating a syllabus for a complete course on improving mental skills and cognitive function, what lessons would you include?- How to Play: play is a vital skill that all children understand but most adults forget. It is key for intellectual growth, discovery via trial and error, and for stress management This class would not focus on rule-based games, like chess. It would be about free play, e.g. playing in the mud.- Exposure: this would be a year-long course where people would simply be exposed to all sorts of things. It would start with a questionnaire so that the instructors would know what each student hadn't been exposed to. As much as possible, exposures would be sensual and interactive, not just reading about something or watching a movie. For instance, students would be sent to other countries, taken to concerts and plays, taken to restaurants with cuisines they've never tasted, etc.- Survival: first aid, wilderness skills, nutrition, stress management, etc.- How to Have Sex: this would focus as much on the recreational aspects of sex (e.g. how to give someone pleasure) as it would on reproduction and VD.- How to Relate to Others: this course would teach students everything neurscience and social science has discovered about how to play well with others: communication skills, diplomacy, etc.- How to Communicate: this would teach effective writing, effective speaking, etc. I recommend this as a textbook: Clear and Simple as the Truth: Writing Classic Prose (Second Edition): Francis-Noël Thomas, Mark Turner: 9780691147437: Amazon.com: Books- How to Use the Scientific Method: this is the best way we've worked out to understand Nature. It's an extremely useful set of tools. The class would be hands on, giving students the experience of crafting falsifiable hypotheses, making rigorous observations and predictions, crafting double-blind experiments, wring up findings, and submitting them to peer review.- Mastering Three Mechanical Skills: there would be many options in this class. Students would get to choose from disciplines like auto-mechanics, woodworking, cooking, sewing, etc. The goal would be to fill the world with experts on the sorts of day-to-day skills society needs.- Teaching: After finishing the above courses, each student would have to teach a class every year. It could be on anything he wanted, but it would have to be a new course every year. One of the best ways to learn is to teach, and while the teacher is learning, society would benefit from his teaching. These would all be elective courses, and they'd all be free. You would not be allowed to charge for your yearly teaching.
What is the wait time for SRS (sex reassignment surgery) in Canada, after an approval from OHIP?
Historically the only surgeons offering vaginoplasties in Canada work at the Brassard Clinic in Montreal. I had my surgery there in Sept. 2018. The Brassard Clinic is an absolutely first rate facility and medical team. Since last year both Ontario and BC have announced intentions to provide more services. I do not know where they stand. It will take some time for them to prove first order results.I gained BC approval and a referral to the clinic for my surgery in Sept. 2017. It took a bit over a month for them to respond with a questionnaire, and then several months for me to respond with the information and supplementary information and tests they needed to go ahead with the surgery. It was late March 2018 before all the needed info and additional tests were in their hands. The medical team review took six weeks or so. By the time I was contacted with a date we were too close to the summer break to get a late spring date. They prefer a six week minimum to 3 month booking wait to permit proper preparation. They wisely suggested I quit smoking 90 days pre-op. I did. My date was almost exactly one year after the referral and half of the delay was in rounding up necessary tests. If one is young, fit, in perfect health, has no vices and uses overnight courier services for all communication; I believe a six month wait would be a reasonable minimum expectation. All my surgery sisters had six month to year long waits.
