PDF Editor FAQ

What's the difference between a gazetted and a non gazetted officer?

A Gazetted officer is one whose name is published in the official gazette by the government when he becomes a gaztted officer either through direct recruitment or by promotion. And where as some posts are Gazetted in some department the equivalent post may or may not be gazetted in other department. It depends upon the policy of the Government. For example, Bank officers and Professors in universities are officers but not gazetted (though Professors have been allowed to attest copies to help students). Same is applicable to school lecturers. Also a circle inspector (also called as Inspector) or sub inspector (known as SI) is not gazetted in Police where as a their counterparts in Armed forces such as Master Warrant Officer or equivalent is gazetted. In police gazetted officers start from Dy. S.P. onwards. Similarly officers and engineers in any corporation or public limited companies such as ONGC, IOC, HPL, LIC, NHPL, NTPC, BSNL, MTNL, Vidhyut Nigams, Roadways Corporation, Navaratnas etc. are not gazetted however high in rank they may be. But officers of Armed forces, Paramilitary, DRDO(Scientists and Technical Officers), Judiciary and almost every govt. department (except a govt. limited company or corporation) including officers selected through UPSC Civil Service and State Civil Services are gazetted officers. In Central Govt. Group A and Group B officers have been classified as Gazetted. To know whether a person is gazetted or not, one has to confirm from the department that person is working with.Gazetted officers enjoy higher perks and facilities than non gazetted ones such as air fares etc. At the same time they are more responsible and are considered public servants always on duty(24*7*365) i.e. there are no fix duty hours for them where as for non gazetted staff duty timings are fixed such as 9 am to 5:30pm.That is why a register is kept for non gazetted staff at offices to mark their attendance along with entry and exit time but no such register is kept for the Gazetted officers as they are supposed to be on duty all the time.If a non gazetted officer works beyond duty hours he/she will get overtime but gazetted officers do not get bonus and overtime even if they are made to work beyond office hours because they being officers are expected to be on duty 24*7*365. Also if they are made to work on holidays they won't get any compensatory day off but the non-gazetted would get a day off for their work on a holiday.Sometimes people refer every officer as gazetted officer but it’s wrong. An officer can be gazetted as well as non-gazetted. A typical example would be Army where we have Commissioned officers(Gazetted) , Junior Commissioned Officers or JCOs (Gaz. and non gaz both) and Non-Commisioned officers or NCOs(Non gazetted). Also, the gazetted officers cannot form Unions or go on strike even if harsh measures are taken against them by the employers because they owe higher responsibility towards the people of India. Officers can form associations which are not as effective as the unions formed by the non-gazetted staff because the latter can declare strikes through Unions etc. Thanks for the upvotes.

How many marriage matches were proposed to newly selected, young IAS/IPS officers, and what will be the dowry rates?

Recently, I was recruited as a gazetted officer. Not revealing my identity or post here but consider it is a UPSC group A service.I received around 60 marriage offers from IAS, IPS, Judge, Tax Commissioner, business families.Said no to all politely.I would marry my college sweetheart who herself is a gazetted officer like me.Other officers also got similar offers of massive dowry. But I don't think any officer accepts these kind of offers if they have self respect. So they just enjoy the attention in the marriage market.
