PDF Editor FAQ

What family secret did you accidentally find out that changed everything?

In my early teens I accidentally found out my mother was married once before she married my father, and she had a son.My parents never talked about things, current or past. They held many secrets. Things were swept under the rug at my house. I still don't know any more now than I did then. I should have asked my mother to tell me the story when I was grown and before she died. She probably would have shared her secrets then.I found out when we were visiting my mother's mother, my grandmother. My grandmother had a family Bible sitting on the coffee table as did so many families in the South. That is where all the births, marriages, and deaths were recorded. The family Bible was considered an “official” record to the US government.Way back, people did not have access to paperwork and official documents as we do today. People didn't have birth and death certificates. If they needed proof and it was recorded in the family Bible, that was acceptable documentation. My grandmother had recorded my mother's first marriage and later, a baby's birth.I never said a word. I just read this information over and over, trying to memorize it and make sense of it. I couldn't do either, and so, I kept my mouth shut.Later, In the middle of an argument, I threw it out there, but didn't get much response. Just that my mother wasn't capable of taking care of a baby at that time in her life. What I did get over the years, was that my mother dropped out of high school because she was pregnant. She married the father of her baby, but not too much later, they divorced and the baby's father's family took custody of the baby. I am not sure if my mother ever saw that child again or got any information.I wanted to do a search, just the information I wrote down on a piece of paper was lost many, many years ago. Like I said, I wish I had questioned my mother when I was grown and before she had Alzheimer's. I don't even know if my sisters ever knew. Secrecy was ingrained in our family.I have thought about taking one of those DNA tests that you can do at home. No telling what may surface! I am still thinking about it. I have nothing to lose? Right?

Do Indian Christians know that their ancestors were Hindu?

Yes, we do know about our Hindu ancestry. Some of us(Goans) even have specific details about our forefathers. I have been researching about my genealogy for many years. Goans can find their ancestry by researching the Portuguese Births and Deaths Records in Goa, baptism, marriage and death certificate of the Church, Sub-Registrar and Panchayat or Municipal records and archives of Inquisition. For example, in my case, my 11th great-father from Cortalim was a temple Mahajan. Although my surname is Portuguese but it was given to our ancestors during Baptism in 1580.At times when we refute radical Hindutva activities, we're considered anti-hindus, but actually we aren't. By the way, we also acknowledge the Inquisition which affected our ancestors and our gentile brethren, where the imperialists exploited Christianity for their greed of conquering nations.

Can my son who was born in the UK with two Irish grandparents now deceased qualify for an Irish passport?

Yes. Just make sure you have the grandparents’ birth, marriage and death certificates, proof of their relationship to the parent (you, perhaps) in the form of your birth certificate, and, of course, the kids’ birth certificates.Once you have all these and proof of citizenship is established, you can apply to have them put on the Irish foreign births register, and once this is done, you can apply for their passports. It’s a bit long-winded (they’re backed up a bit right now, as you might imagine) but perfectly doable, and, as insurance against your kids losing their EU treaty rights thanks to Brexit, invaluable.More info here: Irish citizenship
