It did actually: BerlinOn the left Berlin around the 1800s, on the right the same city in 1913In 1800 Berlin was a small garrison town of some 200.000 people and even Frederick the Great avoided it in favour of the Sanssouci Palace in nearby Potsdam. By the 1930s however it had grown into a city of some 4 million people. To quote from Charles Emerson 1913: In search of a World Before the Great War:This, then, was Berlin: colourful, large, impressive in a showy kind of way, above all, modern. Berlin was a city of vending machines and newspaper kiosks, telephones and trams. In 1895 the city had eight times as many telephones per head of population as London.To the people of the early 20th century Berlin was what Shanghai is to us in 2018, the city of the future, the up-and-coming player on the global arena[1]. While London was still the place for trade and finance and Paris was still the city of lights and the international capital of culture, Berlin was nicknamed ‘Elektropolis’, it was the epitome of modernity where (in the words of Mark Twain) “the main mass of the city looks as if it had been built last week, the rest of it has a just perceptibly graver tone, and looks as if it might be six or even eight months old”.The American traveler Theodore Dreiser best captured the atmosphere of the age:Paris has had its day and will no doubt have others. London is happy with an endless conservative day. But Berlin’s brightest days lay before it. The blood is there, and the hope, and the moody, lustful Wagnerian temperament.As for the question of why hasn’t Berlin followed the great path that lay before it in the first half of the 20th century? The answer is easy to see: the massive destruction of WW2 followed by half a century of instability due to the Cold War, the ravages of communism in the Eastern part of the city and the general divestment of West German resources into other large cities.It’s interesting to imagine how a New York-sized Berlin would have looked like, had the 20th century been more gentle to the continent.[1] Between 1900 and 1913, 426 international conferences were held in Paris, with 141 in London and 96 in Berlin. The number is relatively low but it was growing. By contrast in the same period there were only 14 in New York, fewer than in Oslo.

Until Robert Moses moved in and built freeways everywhere, Buffalo, New York was called the best planned city in AmericaAs this old map shows, like Detroit and Washington DC., Buffalo was built with a radial plan where major avenues all led to the city center. There was plenty of room left for parks and neighbourhoods were laid out to lie between the major avenues and the radial roads circle at increasing distances from the city centre. Industrial areas are separated by space for the rail lines.It was the work of Frederick Law Olmstead, who also designed Central Park in New York City. Buffalo still has one of the best parks systems in America despite the freeways which cut through much of the space once meant for people.

A healthy person can make the walk from the outskirts of the city to my house in less than an hour by following this roadway.And that’s exactly what happened during the Baltimore riots. When there was nothing else to burn, nothing else to destroy, the violence decided to migrate it’s way out of the city to find something else to vandalize.And when that happened, I simply sat outside and started cleaning my AR-15. I wasn’t threatening anyone; in fact I made sure that any person who walked by saw very clearly what I was doing with a polite “How ya doing? Some crazy things in the city, huh?” I made sure that I was on my private property and minding my own business…. and that I just wasn’t in the mood for solicitors. I politely let them know that my neighbors didn’t like visitors either.The police were working 24/7 calming the city down. They wouldn’t have been there in time to do something if we called 911.If you want to disagree with me, then I respect that. But I was so very thankful that I had my AR-15 with me during that tumultuous time.Hell, no. I never want to see an end to private firearm ownership in the United States.
