PDF Editor FAQ

Lawyers, have you ever had a "Perry Mason moment" in court, and if so, what was it like?

My mother was being sued by a gym, in spite of the fact that her doctor had written a letter banning her from exercise. I hired an attorney and accompanied her to the trial. The attorney was useless, and it looked like the gym was going to win. I stood up and asked if I could address the bench and was given permission.I destroyed them! Thankfully, I had looked up laws governing these particular businesses and had copies of the contract and the doctor’s letter.I reminded the court that they had signed her to a lifetime contract, which was illegal, as the company could not promise the customer that they would be around for her entire lifetime. I also pointed out that the contract clearly stated that, should the customer’s attending physician write a letter stating that exercises of that nature would be injurious to his or her patient’s health within 30 days, the contract was null and void. The letter was written within two weeks. As an added little tidbit, I informed the judge that, even though I was on the contract merely as the person who recommended the gym, and was not legally bound to honor my mother’s contract, the manager had called me demanding that I pay, and had handed my work number over to a collection agency, said agency’s rep calling and harassing me, calling me shanty Irish, etc. The judge not only dismissed the case, bawled out my good-for-nothing attorney and the lawyer for the gym, but recommended to me that I should seriously consider becoming a lawyer.

How should I approach my professor to get recommendation letter written for me multiple times?

Many American institutions are prepared for this and have an office that helps manage the sealed and signed envelope, etc. As Erika Robinson says, make sure you group the requests and provide all of the information needed (pre-address the envelopes, etc.). Write an accompanying letter outlining the requirements for the letters, the schools you are applying to, and your personal information. Remind them of things that they might want to include in the letter. Make an appointment with the teachers to ask if they will be your recommender, discuss your proposed schools and goals, tell them a little more about yourself. Return a little later with the packet of information related to the recommendations (or email them if it is all electronic).

What is the most unexpected happiness that's ever happened to you?

It was a day in February 2016. Me and my parents were visiting our relatives in China (we live in Singapore), me being on my long break before the release of my A-level results. My mom has a history of Nephrotic Syndrome, and in 2016 it was her 5th year of recovery. According to the doctor, if it doesn’t relapse within 5 years, then you can consider yourself fully recovered. We were hence really excited, and every night in the hotel we would be planning everything out in the future: we’re gonna buy a new house facing the sea, my mom and my aunt will rent a shop nearby and sell frozen yogurt, we will travel within China every summer and overseas every winter. We had everything planned out. It was perfect. But here’s the thing. Nephrotic Syndrome patients cannot afford to fall sick. Their immune system is really weak so a small cold can be cause a relapse, and in my mom’s case, it has already relapsed once before and the second time may be actually deadly. February in Suzhou was colder than we expected, and the first hotel we stayed at didn’t have good heating. My mom was down with a cold the next day.The day after she announced to me and my dad, teary-eyed, that her illness has relapsed (she’s a doctor herself so she is very aware of the symptoms - in this case she identified signs of protein in her urine). We were devastated. I cried for hours, and the regret was overwhelming. My mom wasn’t planning to travel to Suzhou with us, she was supposed to stay behind in warm, heated Xinjiang if I hadn’t guilt-tripped her to accompany me (it has been tense between me and my dad, and my mom has always felt guilty that her illness had resulted in her lack of presence in my teenage years). This is happening because of me. And when she’s just listing her options of going back to the hospital in Shandong for treatment or maybe finding a better one, and she’s been researching those all night since she found out… I just cried even harder because my first thought was, “okay I’m going to apply for a university near whatever city she’ll be treated in”, then I realised that I had slacked so much on my studies, that I cannot guarantee my A-level results will be good enough to apply for scholarships to China universities. We cried for probably an hour or something, and when finally the crying has ceased my mom kind of just wiped away her tears and said, “well, now let’s go wash our face, change, and go buy that necklace that we looked at yesterday”. Her mental strength amazes me till this day, and she’s taught me an important lesson - that life goes on, regardless of what’s happening, so don’t let the sad news affect your plans of being happy. My dad was the rational voice. He insisted that my mom run through a formal check at the hospital to confirm it, a suggestion that both me and my mom found unnecessary. Because “I’m a doctor myself, do you think I’d make such a careless deduction?”, and honestly at that moment, no one wants to be reminded of this at the time being. But my dad is a really persistent man, and in the end my mom gave in to pacify him.In the few hours my parents were at the hospital, I researched for my options. Tried to predict my grades, and how can international students apply for China universities. Where are the best hospitals specialising in kidney diseases, what is the best university nearby. I thought of which teachers I should approach to write me recommendation letters, even started drafting an email to .Then my parents returned. With the news that there is no relapse. It was a false alarm, the medicines that my mom took for the cold had some reaction with the other medicines she’s been taking to show similar symptoms.Everything is fine. And I can breathe normally again.I’ve never felt this ridiculously happy in my entire life.It was the most extreme swing in emotions I’ve felt in such a short 5 hours. I am so glad my dad believes in science. And hell yes we went to buy that necklace afterwards.

I had been searching for a long time for a software for my small non profit organization so that we could collect member data and process payments in an easy and dynamic manner. We had struggled with other form software in the past because many do not nest questions and are not easy to input directly into email newsletters and/or websites. CocoDoc solved all of these questions. The software allows you to ask questions whose yes or no answer will then lead to other very specific questions. It also integrates payment methods and price points directly into the form. While it takes some testing, it's very easy to set up and share with coworkers before the form goes live. CocoDoc also has the option to collect all responses into a dynamic Google spreadsheet, so that you can see real life responses out of the software.
