Many companies have an agreement with their employees at the time of joining that they won’t be able to pursue any other profession at any other workplace for monetary benefits. Volunteering activities are permitted with local NGOs but you are supposed to draw a paycheck from them.Some companies allow you to work as a freelancer but you cannot be associated with any particular organization. We will continue working as an employee of that company while working as a freelancer through which you may provide consultation and thereby, adding a side income.However, if the agreements violated by you, the organization will be in its full rights to file a legal complaint against you, or worse, terminate you. My wife and I were living in India and she had recently delivered our first child. She kept having chest pains after the birth. We went to a hospital, had an EKG, etc. but could not figure out the cause. This went on for months. She would occasionally have excruciating chest pains, we would visit the hospital, and they wouldn’t find anything wrong.We returned to the USA for Christmas break so that all the family could see our daughter (she was the first grandchild on both sides). I got a temp job stocking shelves overnight at Target. It didn’t pay much but it kept me out of my in-laws hair and enabled me to have some money to spend on the holidays.On New Year’s Day I came home from work to find out my wife was in the hospital. It turned out that she had been having chest pains again. This time we got a diagnosis; gallstones, hundreds of them. They had blocked her hepatic and pancreatic ducts. She was in really bad shape. It was almost a week in the hospital until she stabilized to the point where the surgeon felt comfortable to do surgery to remove her gallbladder.We did not have medical insurance since we were only planning to be in the States for a month. We did not qualify for Medicaid since I made too much money over the month working my temp job. We were volunteering as teachers in India and did not have a salary. We were living off of donations. The hospital bill came to tens of thousands of dollars. Fortunately, the surgeon donated his services for the surgery. He said he believed in the work we were doing. He also said that donating was in line with his Christian faith.We set up payments for the hospital bill. We were scheduled to pay it off in sixteen years. After a year of faithful on-time payments, we received a letter from the hospital thanking us for honoring our side of the agreement and informing us that they had written off and forgiven the remaining amount.To this day, I am grateful to the surgeon and hospital for working with us and treating my wife.

The spirit of fighting against US led forces (US has a very heavy influence on UN at that time) when PRC was just established when Chinese forces were no match to US forces in terms of firepower, guns, tanks, naval and air forces. At that time China has just gone thru a century of humiliation, foreign aggression, civil war and was just in need of breathing space to reconstruct China. The recent TV episodes by CCTV showed the letter from Kim to Mao re the request.That the Chinese army was able to force US to sign a peace agreement is of immense significance: a weak nation (China was 3rd world country at that time) able to do that tells a lot (A US general at the time of signing the peace agreement in 1953 said that was the first time US cannot win a war), the Chinese air force pilots were also extremely good, able to shot down some US ace pilot, the fight in Shang Ganling 上甘岭 near the 38 parallel was also of huge significance forcing US to acknowledge they cant win and have to sign a peace agreement - I really cant describe how difficult and hard it was after seeing the TV by CCTV. It was the most hard, most bravery battle I have ever seen - even those in WWII cant match the condition and extent of war there (it also shows firepower is not the sole determinant of winning a war). I am not sure if there were English subtitle to the CCTV TV on Korean War to help English speaking people understand the battle there.The famous song and known by every Chinese (at least in mainland China) My Motherland 我的祖国 was a song in the movie 上甘岭 which describes the fight in Shang Ganling.The spirit of able to win (or forcing a peace agreement) in the difficult conditions as in the Korean War is of immense motivational significance. Everybody knows US is waging all sorts of war on China (trade, tech, education re students and Confucius Institute, etc etc…..). China has to bridge the shortcomings in technology and many areas. The faster the gap is closed, the better. Surely the spirit would help Chinese people to work harder in closing the gap. Chinese have done so in producing the atomic bombs and satellites. These kind of spirit is a national treasure, given the antagonistic attitude towards China displayed by US and many of its allies.
