Then, Hitler attacked the France and occupied it.To prevent the complete subjugation of his homeland, Petain, who was himself a nationalist, made a pact with the devil. He was appointed as president of France of Vichy, a puppet state that controlled only a southern part of the country and the French colonies, while the German military occupied the north and west. Needless to say, he ended helping the Germans, the enemies that he fought with such deditions 24 years before. He became a collaborationist. And of course, when Germany was defeated, he faced a sad epilogueAt the end of the war, Petain was put under trial for betrayal. He told the judges that he did everything he could to protect his country and had no remorse for his actions. He risked to be sentenced to death but DeGaulle, who now was President of the Third Republic, graced him and Petain died in prison in 1951, seen as a traitor by the very people who saw him as an hero after the First World War and maybe even by the sons of the men that he brought back home alive in the First World War. What can I say, this is the perfect historical example of an hero who ended his life as the “villain” of the piece.

Putting it together, you have Foe-gt-lander.And yes, this is a funny name even in German, because the i doesn’t really fit (it would be pronounced just the same without it). You’ll note that some German speakers pronounce the i, others don’t.
