If you are in California, you can apply to the finest law enforcement organization in the world — the California Highway Patrol. There are a few colleges including Sacramento State University Sacramento that have good criminal justice programs, and a criminal justice degree may help. But there’s no harm in applying when you are 18 just to go through the hiring process to see what its like. The process consists of a written exam to test your writing ability and reading comprehension, a physical exam, which is pretty easy if you are in decent shape, a QAP (Qualifications Appraisal Panel interview) and a psychological exam (to see if you are crazy).The pay is great, and there is a great safety retirement plan. The work can be very interesting and you can request which area of the State you would like to work in. There are great promotional opportunities as well. The cons are you could be injured or killed out there on the road.
