What is something that you swear happened but you have no proof and nobody believes you?

I was a rural veterinarian back in my first seven years of practice. As such I drove a pickup truck with a special insert in the back to hold all my gear and medications. It was heated so nothing will freeze and had a small refrigerator also. My wife at the time had our family car while on a day trip with her mother. I was supposed to meet up with a friend and we were going to go to the Dayton air show. So I got into my truck and headed towards his house which was about 45 minutes away. Most of my veterinary gear was safely stowed in the back but I had a couple of packages of medications I was supposed to drop off at a client’s farm the next day on the seat next to me. In addition, I had my fully loaded tool box in the cabin as I needed to do some repairs at my office (this is the important part)I had not driven more than two miles from my home when a violent thunderstorm appeared out of no where. It was raining torrents!. I slowly pulled away from a stop sign and was cautiously driving along a curving river road that I had been down hundreds of times before. I rounded a curve and lost complete control of the vehicle. There was a culvert running under the road at this point that was clogged. All the rain coming down so suddenly had overflowed the road side drainage ditch and formed a small river across the road. This is what I had driven into when I lost control. I struggled to straighten the truck out but unfortunately had slid all the way across the flood at this point with the truck going fully perpendicular to the course of the road. The wheels then gripped the relatively dry pavement and I started tumbling. The truck rolled three times before coming to a rest in the ditch. I was covered in powdered medication as the box next to me on the seat had broken open. Everything in the passenger cabin was strewn into chaos. The roof of the vehicle was sitting on my head having caved in during the tumult. The tool box with 30 plus pounds of tools in it had not moved an inch! Now that is pretty remarkable and I to this day consider myself fortunate to have walked away from that incident with nothing more than a bump on the head. Here is the part where no one believes me. I got out of the truck and a passerby stopped to help. I was only two miles form my home so the good Samaritan dropped me off there. I called a tow and arranged a ride back to the scene. Upon arriving there was a full response by emergency personnel (fire, EMT, State Highway Patrol). Apparently the accident had been witnessed from a near by farm house and they called it in. The Highway Patrolmen was irritated I had left the scene. I responded that because I was uninjured, the vehicle was off the road, and it was a single vehicle accident, I didn’t see the point. He actually some what agreed with me on that point. Now here’s the point of greatest interest: He asked me who else was in the vehicle. I responded I was traveling alone. He said the witness plainly saw two people exit the vehicle after the accident. I didn’t know how to respond. I suggested that perhaps he saw the Good Samaritan, but the witness insisted he saw a second person get out of the truck. After several minutes of going back and forth on the issue, the Patrolmen desisted not necessarily because he believed me (because I think he didn’t) but because he had no proof. At the time I was still a little in shock after the accident; so I didn’t process the whole thing. I was traveling alone yet this person insisted I had a passenger. To be fair, I was the one who had a knot on his head, and the point could be made that I was not the most reliable narrator of the event. And how did that truck pass through three full revolutions with that tool box not moving an inch?

French historians have said if you want to understand the French, you must understand the battle of Verdun! Why? Do you agree?

I beg to differ with the two answers so far.Note : Among French people it’s not “la bataille de Verdun” (battle of Verdun) but simply “Verdun” and that simple word carries enormous significance (although dimmer as years pass).Everyone has a great-grand father or uncle that went through (of went down in) VerdunThere is hardly a town in France without a “rue”, or “place”, or “avenue” de Verdun.Verdun is deep rooted in our conscience as THE EXAMPLE of the ingrained rural dogged resilience of the French trooper. The battle itself contains the ingredients of several dramas. See for instance the forts being almost evacuated as militarily useless some month prior of German attack. See Colonel Driant (a french MP of sixty one) in command of two “battalion de chasseurs” in charge of defending the future attack sector who using of his political influence obtains to be auditioned by the National Assembly defense commitee and claims for reenforcement to no avail. This brilliant man who due to his age and political status of MP could have easily avoided armed service was killed on the second day of the attack while tending to a wounded “chasseur”.Verdun is also a witness of the creativity of French Armed Forces in this period. Within few days a logistical chain called Noria is set up. One lorry every 15 second, night and day, for several months. Any vehicle unable to carry on is pushed aside and no attempt is made at fixing it. Sappers are stationed all along the road and throw incessantly pieces of rock under the wheels of the moving vehicles to prevent holes forming. A dedicated air “umbrella” comprised of the best French fighter squadrons is maintained overhead to prevent German air interference. French troops are carefully rotated so that the battle effort is equally spread on the whole French army. (70% of all French regiments participated).Edit thanks to Martin Oudot. The then legendary motto was “Ils ne passeront pas” which means : They will not get through. And in the end, they did not get through, but at a terrible cost. 6 french “Communes” (villages) have not survivedBeaumont-en-VerdunoisBezonvauxCumières-le-Mort-HommeFleury-devant-DouaumontHaumont-près-SamogneuxLouvemont-Côte-du-PoivreUp to now those “communes” have ZERO inhabitants are reputed “Mortes pour la France” and enjoy only a ceremonial mayor. The landscape after a century still bears scars of the fiendish shelling, and quite regularly unexploded shells are unearthed some of them with a still lethal poisonous gaz charge.

The forms I needed were readily available....what I was not able to determine was the difference between the one time use and the subscription...that should be a littler clearer....other than that...great experience.
