What are some ways to inspire girls to embrace technology?

We've been trying a few ways to inspire our daughter (she's four now) to explore technology and be comfortable with it (without forcing it on her). This is by no means comprehensive or a systematic analysis of what to do for everyone, but just a list of some of our own hacks for inspiring her to make things:littlebits kits to get her excited about building electronics crafts projects (her eyes lit up when she realized she could control sound/light/fans by connecting a switch)Goldieblox kits to explore mechanical systemsLots and lots of Lego (mix of Star Wars toys, Lego Friends, and others) and lego time togetherEarly childhood coding apps (Move the Turtle on iPad, Tynker on the Web)Toca Boca "build a world" app (Toca Builders)Kano "build & program a computer" kit (Kano: A computer anyone can make)Waiting for kids robotics kits (Bo and Yana, Play-i & MOSS Dynamic Robot Construction Kit, MOSS - The Dynamic Robot Construction Kit)I was inspired to go into tech when I saw my uncle play around with the 8088 back in the day...and because I loved playing with lego & meccano as a kid. So I'm trying to create the same environment for our kids.Caveat: My wife is a mathematician and I'm an engineer...so our daughter (she's four now) has been exposed to technology since she was born.

Why is brake fluid so reactive and destructive compared to gear oil, transmission fluid, and engine oil?

First off I’m no chemist and certainly not an expert on brake fluid. So having said that here is my take on my experiences with brake fluid. Brake fluid has no where near the properties of oil. I say oil because two out of the three you list are oils. Transmission lube is either an oil or a fluid. If you have a stick shift then it is oil if it is automatic then it is a fluid.Brake fluid is a type of hydraulic fluid since the brakes use a little bit of foot pressure to create a lot of brake pad pressure. To do this takes mixture of chemicals that have to be able to do several things. It must be extremely heat proof, a wheel brake can generate a tremendous amount of heat in a very short period of time (much more so than gear oil). It must be able to do this over and over and over without changing properties. It must not catch fire and cannot “fade” under pressure (compress). It must not contain water since water will boil from the heat and produce more pressure from the steam. The last one caused a major concern for motorcycles in the 70s. Here is a story from my past that will show you what happens when all the conditions above are not met.Motorcycles during the 70s were just switching over from drum brakes to disk. My 75 Harley FXE was one of the new ones with disk brakes a single one front and rear. I had had the bike for less than a year when I was on the highway one night heading to work. First thing that happened was a strange smell that I couldn’t place from my position on the seat. I then noticed that my bike was slowing down even though I was giving it more gas. Finally I pulled over to see what was going on and I saw that my rear brake was red hot and smoke was coming from the pads. I tried to move it a little further away from the side of the road but I couldn’t move it. I was stuck. I figured that my brake had locked up somehow but what could I do?After a little while a fellow biker came along and offered to help. He had a tool kit and I used a 3/8″ wrench from it to loosen the brake valve to see if I could drain the fluid enough to get the brake to release. As soon as I opened the valve a fountain of steam came out of it. Not what I was expecting. It was so hot that I burnt my finger from the sputtering droplets.Long story short I contacted Harley and told them what had happened to me. They said that they have had other reports about this situation and would be coming out with a recall soon. The problem was that when water gets into the brake lines it will cause seals and non metal plungers to swell and become so swollen that it locks the plunger in place and with the water still in the line from from the brake reservoir to the brake it will produce steam and cause the brake pads to pop out and brake lock the wheel. At that time HD was using DOT 3 brake fluid and by switching to DOT 4 it kept the water out of the system. To this day they still use DOT 4. That is also when the industry recommended that you never use an open bottle of brake fluid since you have no idea how long it has been sitting and during that time it may have collected water or dirt both of which can cause problems. So there you have my take on brake fluid why it is the way it is. By the way you mention “reactive” I have never seen brake fluid react to anything. It will eat your paint and deform some plastic but not cause any violent reactions.Anybody else??

How do I connect a portable generator to a house without a transfer switch?

You supply your main panel from the generator via a separate feeder breaker that can handle reverse power flow, in conjunction with a listed generator interlock system on the main breaker and generator feeder breaker, which allows only one of the two breakers to be closed at a time. Here are a couple of examples: Generator Interlocks and Manual Transfer Switch KitsNote that this is a manual system, so when you lose utility power, you have to manually open the main breaker, change the position of the interlock device, and close the generator feeder breaker in order to restore power to your affected loads. You of course do the opposite when utility power is restored (which means you will probably want some convenient and safe way to monitor the incoming utility power circuit).Note: work on electrical systems should only be performed by qualified and licensed electricians, and modifications to those systems should be reviewed and approved by a licensed professional engineer (PE).
