Is southern Indiana a nice place to live?
As someone that is a native of this area and lived here first from the early 1980s until 2008 and again here since 2013, I will say that its seen better times in Southern Indiana. Then again I have seen a whole lot worse places. The biggest problem in my view that exists across Southern Indiana is a local mentality of people thinking that if you’re an outsider that you’re going to be scum of the earth and troublemaker and some sort of drain on society. For some goofy reason they have this mentality of people from Chicago all being criminals, goons, parasites and lowlifes. That’s one problem I see. I also lived several years in the NW Indiana area near Valparaiso and Portage when I was younger. It seems like people have a general antipathy to outsiders and anyone that might mess up their little town mentality which I think its hilarious. I was born in Southern Indiana in the mid 1970s and then we moved away for about 6 years and then back to the town where I was born and later finished high school. The quality of the town has degraded over the years especially when loss of industry and jobs and stagnation set in. The town became more conservative with people not wanting to grow and bring in new industry. All the while the existing industries shrank or moved out or plain shut down to the point that there might be 2 or 3 decent employers/factories for most of the largely uneducated population. The funny is that the small town I am referring to is only about 30 miles from a bigger metro area and could have so much more but the people refuse to get out of the 1980s when everyone could get a job at the local Smith plant or one of other woodworking outfits or car part manufacturer. Now I have been all over Southern Indiana from east to west to Evansville to Cincinnati, OH and everywhere in Indiana and most of Kentucky.Your towns in Southern Indiana are hit and miss in that you’ll find different opportunities in different towns and some places you want to avoid entirely because either a lack of jobs is evident in that area or a high level drug problem exists in there. In fact, in some cases these drug problems are ignored by the local prosecuting attorney and officials although they are taking more of a harder line against meth, heroin and of course marijuana which is a whole other debate. The laughable problem is that over about 25 years the town I grew up in basically became a drug town where everyone knows who the dealers are, who is related to whom, who does drugs, who sells drugs and who can’t be touched by law enforcement either through political pressure and string pulling. That’s the type of inbred sort of environment that the county of Washington and county seat of Salem has going on there and its only 30 miles from Louisville Kentucky by air but the local outfit spent years trying to make sure that they didn’t get jail time or busted and knew the right people to get to in order to make sure law enforcement didn’t hammer the high level dealers in town.I’ve lived in other communities in Indiana as well as a few year stint in Kentucky (even worse than Indiana) but in Southern Indiana in many communities they are cracking down on criminal activity and drug dealing because too many people have ruined their lives and the lives of others. One shining example is the sheriff of Scott County Indiana over the past several years has basically started going after meth dealers, pushers and other abusers because their community and obviously other counties was hit by an HIV epidemic that broke out in Austin but also spread to Scottsburg and even into other counties including people that probably don’t know they have contracted HIV until telltale signs start showing up. There was about 200 people at first who developed HIV symptoms but I would venture to guess that many more ended up with it but it hasn’t made the news.If you’re going to live in Southern Indiana you need a good job or start your own business of course and the better places in Southern Indiana would be around Evansville and Newburgh and Princeton. But also look at other communities such as Dubois County which is Jasper and Huntingburg for employment. If you’re into college towns you can try out Bloomington for sure which tends to run quite liberal but the outlying areas are more conservative. Other cities in the 812 district that would be suitable might be Columbus and parts of Floyd and Clark Counties. The more urban areas have their share of problems especially crime and vandalism and the big Southern Indiana bugaboo of drug abuse. There is a whole section of South Central Indiana that I would largely avoid other than traveling through and that includes Washington County, Orange County, Lawrence County and Parts of Crawford, Jackson etc. There is nothing there to attract anyone that wants to better themselves and get an education. Another area that might be ok to live in would be the I-64 corridor although in Crawford, Perry and Spencer counties it might be a haul to work somewhere depending on what kind of employment you can find. There is a lot of political corruption in Southern Indiana in places as well mostly due to the good old boy system, people being related, the judges being related to the people that work in county government, sheriffs department employees being from one family that have too many tentacles into the law enforcement area. Including having one family member that was screwing a female inmate while she was locked up. Of course, that has happened in other area counties in Southern Indiana as well most notably Lawrence County in the city of Bedford. Some places in Southern Indiana would be suitable for someone to start a business, build a home or a homestead and like I’ve said there are some places that its best to avoid no matter how much they want to promote the communities down there to outsiders. Salem, Indiana is one of them to avoid and Paoli, Indiana isn’t much better. Its almost as if there is a Bermuda Triangle in Southern Indiana of accepted drug use and practices in Salem, Paoli, Mitchell and Bedford. Almost as if you drew a straight line from Salem to Paoli and then Paoli to Bedford and then back from Bedford to Salem, IN. Those areas have a lot of poverty, lesser jobs, low wage jobs, bad employers and a high percentage of meth users and other social misfits. The better towns and cities I find in Southern Indiana area Columbus, Nashville, Bloomington, Jasper, Princeton, Evansville, Jasper, Corydon, Floyd Co Suburbs but stay away from New Albany, Clarksville and Jeffersonville because they are a subset of Louisville just in a different state. You can do better in Southern Indiana than those places. Another place that might be worth your time might be closer to Indianapolis in Johnson County in the suburbs or even in places like Bargersville or Trafalgar or Edinburgh. Close enough to the city without city problems though they are in the Indianapolis/Central Indiana area. Bloomington is fine in most places though some places in the middle of the town tend to be rowdy because of college students and fraternities and drinking and partying. Crime in Bloomington has went up over the past say 20 years but its still livable and much more livable than say some of the Bermuda Triangle communities of Southern Indiana.Evansville and Newburgh seem to be pretty prosperous places overall with a Midwestern Style of living though they do have some small crime issues and more problems than they did in the past when I spent a lot of time there. Some of the rural areas are just places that you see on a map and drive through and that is all you find there a few run down houses, small towns with nothing to do, drugs being a huge problem and lack of ambition to improve ones lives. Especially in the more rural areas of Southern Indiana. Don’t be surprised that you live next door to a meth user or meth manufacturer in Southern Indiana in places. The area where my family lived at for 60 years now is turning into hit and miss every two or three houses has someone convicted of meth related criminal activity. In some places in Southern Indiana you can’t beat the scenery and wildlife and being able to go outdoors without a lot of pollution. Trees everywhere especially from SR 46 on South to Kentucky. Many open fields that used to be filled with trees but have been cleared for agriculture. Some places are more attractive than others and you have the Hoosier National Forest to explore in South Central, Indiana. Various state parks such as Spring Mill, Clifty Falls, Lincoln, McCormicks Creek, OBannon Woods, etc.. A great deal of hill country in the Southern 1/3 of Indiana below the city areas of Indianapolis and the suburbs and down to the Ohio River. Abundant wildlife such as deer, possums, squirrels, coyotes and good fishing in many places just that so many you can visit but you wouldn’t want to live there.Schools are like the towns and cities being hit and miss. Further north near Bloomington, Columbus, Johnson County (Indy Suburbs) schools are pretty good most places and get good ratings from the state. Communities in SW Indiana have been focused on good education such as Jasper, Vincennes, Evansville area, Spencer, Warrick, etc. South Central Indiana around Bedford, Salem, Paoli and most places around there the schools are mediocre. That is why a lot of Southern Indiana residents don’t have much knowledge outside of their own area like in the town of my youth where they don’t leave the county except to go to Louisville or somewhere else and really don’t have the depth of education, knowledge and real world experience to make it elsewhere. The social awareness is much better in Southern Indiana once you get to more populated areas.Good quality jobs are scarce in South Central Indiana especially around Salem, Paoli, Bedford, Scottsburg, etc. A lot of people in far Southern Indiana work in Louisville, KY or Southern Indiana across the river from Louisville. A lot of people in the northern part of Southern Indiana work in Bloomington, Columbus, Indianapolis and the suburbs and then SW Indiana is Crane Naval Surface Warfare Center a Naval base in Indiana that does all kinds of military work and is a crown jewel for the area. The job climate appears to be a lot better in SW Indiana near Evansville due to Toyota building a plant about 20 years ago just North of Evansville in Princeton and then other suppliers moving to the area. There is a good deal of work in the Evansville area as well. A lot of people though do move to the Indianapolis suburbs to raise their families from many smaller places in Southern Indiana. I know in my high school class of 130 we had about half of them move 80 miles north to get better jobs and the many of the rest moved to Louisville area. Out of my high school class I would venture that maybe 30 are left in the small town and the same goes for many classes that graduate from my high school where I grew up.All in all with Southern Indiana I would say that its hit and miss and you have to do your research before moving there without any real knowledge of the local conditions. You’re going to find it tough sledding in some situations because the local clique doesn’t really want to open up to people that aren’t like them. That’s the kind of static or resistance you’ll get in many small Southern Indiana towns of 0 to 15000 people.
What are my chances of getting in the FBI (special agent)?
Anyone with U.S. citizenship, between the ages of 23 and 37, and who has proven himself in his business can become an FBI agent, regardless of gender. Out of tens of thousands of online applications, the FBI Academy selects 1,100 people a year.... Symbol of the FBI Academy ...New agents in beige pants and navy polo shirts are practicing to hit the target with a Glock pistol. For some, it's a new experience, explains head of training Timothy Dilendi:"Various people come to us: veterans of the war in Iraq or Afghanistan, former police officers, but also peasants and pilots. It is the first time for some to hold a weapon in their hand. "All of those elected passed several qualification levels and almost all of them applied for the Academy of Patriotism. After filling out the form, the first round of tests will begin. The condition is checked on the second day - push-ups, running shorter and longer sections and squats. Sports training makes up a quarter of the training of new agents, just like shooting, but also theory.... "Hogan's Alley" ..."You see the training of our new agents here," explains Special Agent Kurt Crawford of the FBI's Communications Bureau. "A lot of shots are fired, about a million bullets are spent per month at the Academy in Quantum."Agents must learn the laws and know how to write reports. And before they are given a weapon, they must know when they are allowed to use it. Richard Shot, of the FBI's legal department, says:"According to the so-called The FBI agent, an FBI agent, can shoot if he has a good reason to do so, that is, if there is a danger that the suspect will kill others in the near future, or inflict severe injuries on you. "It is practiced with video simulations in a windowless room. And the last part of the training consists of practical exercises in the so-called Hogan Alley. Residents and suspects of that street that is part of the Academy are extras. For search or arrest exercises, it is quite enough. After 20 weeks, the basic training was completed. And new agents are starting to work in one of the 57 bureaus for a starting salary of $ 57,000 a year. The FBI Academy is the Federal Bureau of Investigation's law enforcement training and research center near the town of Quantico in Stafford County, Virginia. Operated by the bureau's Training Division, it was first opened for use in 1972 on 385 acres of woodland, which is not available for public tours. The academy was opened for the purpose of training the new agents due to FBI Agents being granted the power to arrest and possess a firearm in 1933. So the newly armed agents needed somewhere to train, the Marine Corps granted them access to their firing ranges in Quantico, Virginia. After outgrowing the Marine Corps firing ranges the FBI was granted permission to build their own firing range and classroom on the base. Over time they periodically added new sections such as a whole new wing, kitchen, and basement. But with the rapid growth it still wasn't enough to suffice their needs. In 1965, the FBI received approval for a new complex at Quantico and construction began in 1969.The opening of the new facility in 1972 boasted more than two dozen classrooms, eight conference rooms, a large auditorium, a gym, pool, library, and a new firing range. The new complex had everything the FBI needed to train new agents in large quantities.
Did the Soviet Union build American-style towns to train their spies to infiltrate the United States?
This is an interesting question and one needs to go to the Spanish Civil war as a starter. All members of the international brigade handed in their passports when they joined. That war was essentially run by the KGB on the communist side. It was a three sided war, Franco, the Communists and the KGB. Once an international brigade soldier was killed his passport was forwarded to Russia and handed to the professional department so the passport could be altered and a Russian spy sent to whatever the country was on that passport. In Australia some believe a school was started on the Albury Wodonga border to train Trade Union personal in subterfuge and spying. Some suspect Russian emigre were trained in spying at that school. For the emigre population in Australia, Russia had their relatives and if they did not do what they were told their relatives back in Russia were murdered. The book on the external activities of the KGB states “We controlled every emigre organisations world wide.”The grape vine of, for example of the Baltic people in Australia, in reality was so those in the KGB back in Russia could exploit these people. Effectively many became spies.Menzies said beware of the Reds under the bed, well for many they were actually in the bed. We can't comprehend the evil of what happened in Russia. As for those in Russia being trained, well those passports from Spain had to go somewhere. Every international volunteer who died left a passport for the KGB to use.
