Is California a declining state?

It depends on who you are and where you live. If you’re a tech CEO buying up properties around your 10 homes to ensure privacy and security, there’s no sign of the state’s decline. If you’re a restaurant owner in San Francisco wondering if he can afford to keep the lights on for another month, or a shopkeeper dealing with the huge increase in Shoplifters Due to Prop. 47, you might have a completely different perspective. If you’re a working stiff who has to step over hypodermic needles on your way to work in the morning, or walk past junkies shooting up openly on the bus or in a train station, it might seem like the Golden State is circling the drain. But many of us who grew up in a California that was a far cleaner, safer and more functional, even to someone like myself who was poor at the time, are wondering to ourselves, “What the hell happened?”Allow me to introduce Jonathan Ward, the founder of ICON motors…… a company that builds drive-able art like this reproduction of a 1950s Chevrolet pickup. His reproductions are built to capture the essence of the era in which these trucks first appeared on the road, but meeting the emission standards of modern vehicles and having enhanced drivability and safety.Ward’s business also converts classic cars to electric, such as this 1949 Mercury Coupe (pictured above), which now operates just as cleanly as a Tesla.Ward loves industrial design and craftsmanship. He also loves his home state of California, but this is how he describes the business climate in the Golden State.Ward isn’t a political guy, and doesn’t belong to either political party, but he recognizes that the regulatory model being promoted by the state is harassing, and fining into bankruptcy, all kinds of businesses. On a ranking of America's Top States for Business in 2019, CNBC ranked California 30th…which doesn’t seem that bad. Except that ranking includes such variables as “technology” and “quality of life.” California is clearly #1 in technology, owing largely to tech giants such as Google. In education, it ranks 30th. In infrastructure it ranks 33rd, despite levying some of the highest taxes in the country.Boosters who are proud to tout that California now has the world's 5th largest economy fail to point out that 18 other states actually have better economies. States such as Georgia, North Carolina, Texas, Utah, Washington, Florida, and a few more are doing economically better. What drops California to the 32nd slot overall is that it comes in dead last for The crippling cost of doing business. According to the Jewish Journal, The Staggering Cost of Doing Business in California includes…“Lawmakers, through various mechanisms, have significantly driven up the cost of energy. They began and renewed cap-and-trade, which the Legislative Analyst’s Office forecasts will raise gasoline prices in the years ahead — so the state can keep pushing its bullet train, which is heavily dependent on cap-and-trade funding. They’ve imposed the nation’s highest state sales tax, highest income tax, and yet remarkably never seem satisfied with current levels of taxation.”Business News Daily points out that California has possibly the most restrictive business regulations in the country. Not only are those regulations costly, but they are continuously changing. You might be in compliance one day and out of compliance the next, with no choice but to start writing checks to attorneys and the state. Many of us who actually live in California think that CNBC’s ranking might be giving the state too much credit, and other sources agree. According to The Best and Worst States for Business, California is actually ranked 48 for business climate. Those who live in the state have to put up with numerous problems. Among them is California’s Traffic Is Terrible, which is blamed on commuters’ reliance on automobiles. The truth is that California is big state, with industry and commerce often far from housing. Additionally, the housing close to the jobs might be prohibitively expensive for all but the most well off, leaving working class people long commutes. While Los Angeles has the world's worst traffic congestion, according to USA Today, residents of San Diego, the Bay Area and L.A.-Orange County are not unjustified in feeling like they are in traffic hell.I live about 120 miles from UCLA. A couple years ago, I was released from UCLA Medical Center after a surgery. It took roughly five hours to drive the 78 miles from Westwood to San Bernardino. As mentioned earlier, California Has some of the highest taxes in the United States. And it’s not just income taxes. Sales taxes take a big chunk out of your lifestyle. According to Victor Davis Hanson“California has the ninth-highest combined state and local sales taxes in the country, but its state sales tax of 7.3 percent is America’s highest. As of April 1, California is now applying that high state sales tax to goods that residents buy online from out-of-state sellers.”California’s government is taking in record revenues, but the political class is desperate to grab up even more money.“Scott Wiener, a Democratic state senator from San Francisco, has introduced a bill that would create a new California estate tax. Wiener outlined a death tax of 40 percent on estates worth more than $3.5 million for single Californians or more than $7 million for married couples.Given the soaring valuations of California properties, a new estate tax could force children to sell homes or family farms they inherited just to pay the tax bills.”I understand that “Taxes are‘The Price We Pay for a Civilized Society,” as stated by Oliver Wendell Holmes. But that’s only true to a point: California has exceeded that point, and many of us Californians are noting an absence of civilization.Or maybe homeless addicts pooping in the grocery store are the price we pay for civilization.Imagine for a moment that you pour your life savings into a down payment on what you thought was your California dream home, a place to raise your children. And for years, you loved your home. Then you notice the neighborhood starting to change, and one day you notice that the view out your back window looks something like this……or like this…Maybe you’re trying to run a small business in LA or San Francisco, and the sidewalk in front of your store looks like this. And maybe the people living in those tents leave a little good morning present or two for you to pick up…every day.Now all the customers who used to put bread into the mouths of your children are afraid to come to your business. They’re afraid to leave their car parked anywhere near your business. The same politicians who try to strangle every dollar possible from you as a businessman, or even as an employee, have also pushed a slew of reforms that reduce penalties for most property crimes. As a result of Proposition 47 there has been a noticeable Increase in Property Crimes. Since the implementation of criminal justice reforms, One San Francisco neighborhood saw 300% increase in car break-ins. And it’s not just San Francisco. The LA Times has reported that Car burglaries in some California cities are at crisis levels. And when the police actually catch the thieves red-handed, they do no jail time, because Prosecutors say their hands are tied.In one notorious case, a TV crew reporting on car break-ins in SF has both bait car and camera crew vehicle robbed.“But, to Guerrero's shock, the story continued; Inside Edition's camera crew van was broken into while she was conducting an interview inside the neighbor's residence."They stole thousands of dollars worth of equipment," she said, opening the SUV door to shattered glass. "We actually got hit twice in one day."In 2017, there were a reported 31,122 automotive break-ins reported to police. We have no idea how many went unreported, but many residents have simply given up because they know that even if caught, the criminal is unlikely to face real consequences. The same Proposition 47 that led to a plague of automotive break-ins has also resulted in a rise in shoplifting, thefts, criminal activity across state. Small-time crime has become big business in CA, as organized Crime Rings developed a successful business model of looting stores. Criminals know that they won’t do time as long as they get caught with less than $950 in stolen goods.Rachel Michelin, who currently serves as President of the California Retailers Association, explained to Fox News the crude savviness of the latest generation of shoplifters. “[Shoplifters] know what they’re doing. They will bring in calculators and get all the way up to the $950 limit.” She continued. “One person will go into a store, fill up their backpack, come out, dump it out and go right back in and do it all over again.”I could go on and on detailing the failures of criminal justice reform in the state. I could also talk about how similar changes to the Education Code have created a chaotic atmosphere on school campuses. AB 1729 and AB 420 were two laws that did to teachers and administrators what Prop 47 did to cops and prosecutors. More recently, SB 419 destroyed what was left of adult authority. I teach at what was once one of the 1000 best high schools in America. Now you can’t prop your door open unless you’re willing to put up with someone screaming the F-word at the top of their lungs in the hallway. Vandalism is rampant. Defiance of teachers is out of control. For a lucky few, California is a state on the right track. Its economy is the fifth largest in the world. Tech centers are literally bursting with new ideas and new revenue streams. But for the vast majority, California is a state undergoing massive economic and social disruption, based on faulty ideas, promoted by people who have no idea what it’s like to actually live in the state.

Why are so many people leaving California?
