I will suggest some directions, but first, I will outline my own career path.I started in our company in the Industrial Engineering department, having graduated college with a B.S. in Applied Statistics (Operations Research). My background led to performing time-motion studies, improvement studies, and interfacing with manufacturing engineers and tool engineers to perform my job. Sometime later, I was drafted into working with factory automation and worked for a number of years as a software engineer and software developer.My experience in the manufacturing world and my software development experience propelled me into software quality engineering, which is somewhat distinct from quality engineering - though there are many overlaps. QE is largely quantitative, dealing with process control, corrective/preventive action, process metrics, and process improvement. The field uses statistical process control and measurement quite heavily.So, a quality engineer can come from the factory floor or any other field of engineering. A degree in mathematics is good, too. The QE will draw on knowledge of company operations and processes to measure and improve flow, perform Lean (or Six Sigma) exercises, look at nonconformance, work with engineers toward product and process improvement, and oversee supply chain issues.Where do you go once you are a Quality Engineer? Well, there are several paths from there, too. Material Review Board (MRB) is an area that focuses on nonconformity of products (or services), works with engineers to determine a disposition for the nonconformity, and reports corrective action to management and regulators (or customers). It can be a fulfilling career.Auditing gives you a good career track, too. ISO9001 auditors travel a lot, are looked at as process experts, and help advise organizations toward preventive action. This job requires a good knowledge of the ISO standards, specific industry knowledge, and process improvement methods.Finally, for a management career track, the ISO9001 standards require a management representative as an advocate (or it-person) who is responsible for maintaining the Quality Management System. This can be a rewarding job as it typically interfaces with all departments in a company or organization. You get to see all aspects of the product (or service) life cycle and make sure the organizational strategy is consistent.There is probably much more to be said about careers in Quality.
