In a decade working with candidates, I’ve got to help a lot of folks who won but know plenty who have lost.The first step is to understand that they’re going through. I actually talked to two guys yesterday who both lost their races. One was challenging a congressional incumbent and the other was a State Representative who lost his bid for reelection. I didn’t know how they felt until I asked.As it turned out, both of them were coping well and neither was depressed about it. Had they been, I would have handled the conversation differently. One already had an idea of how he could keep pursuing his passion for reform as a non-elected agent. He was excited about the freedom he’d have in that role and new opportunities to push the envelope. I asked questions that let him develop and display his passion. By verbalizing his thoughts and excitement, he was able to make it more real to himself.The other was ready for another round and was talking about when he’d launch his campaign for a re-match. In that case, while I hope he’ll run again, I felt like my friend was being far too aggressive and wasn’t taking the time he needed to seek counsel, identify weaknesses in his previous campaign and make sure it was a good idea for his family. So I articulated those points and told him I thought he should hold on even allowing himself to consider another campaign until he’d taken at least a few months to solely focus on his family, business and friends.Every case is specific to the individual, and even the election but I think this will give you a good template for approaching that conversation.
