This is another example of students misunderstanding how (most U.S. STEM) departments assign incoming Ph.D. students to advisors.In general, a student must be admitted by the department admissions committee before the mating ritual between new students and the faculty takes place during the first semester. Often there is a mismatch between which faculty are willing to advise which students, and the department also has a say in that decision.Until a student has been admitted by the committee, communicating with faculty members may help but the faculty member might not even be on the admissions committee that academic year, or if on the committee, the faculty member may be out-voted and the student not admitted.In case of failure to be admitted, I advise not contacting the (any) faculty member.
