PDF Editor FAQ

As a therapist, psychologist, etc. has a client ever changed your perspective around something? If so, how?

Doctor Bob changed my perspective. He was a medical doctor and a Christian missionary, and was giving his life to a very primitive and sometimes dangerous tribe, and that’s the only details I can give.I had always had very mixed feelings about missionaries — they wanted to do good, but the price was extinguishing ancient cultures and religions and replacing them with a version of Kansas Conservative Evangelical Christianity that was never a good fit. The fact that I’d been a pastor myself made me think I was an expert about missionary work. I got over that fast when Bob showed up.Bob came to see me on his five-year furlough — six months back in the USA for rest, study, health checkups, and all the rest. Bob had a lot of trouble sleeping, and he had chronic low back pain too. He wanted non-drug approaches that he could use, like self-hypnosis, visualization, and progressive muscle relaxation. His aim was better sleep, less pain, and picking up some skills to use with his patients.I learned Bob was very low key. His idea of evangelizing was to attract interest and answer questions. That’s it. He led a joyful life, got and gave lots of love, helped the people with their health problems at the little clinic he ran, and was just. . .there.Bob admitted he didn’t want to take anything away from the people: he just wanted them add Jesus, if they were interested. He said “I’m no preacher. It’s all about attraction, not advertising, not promoting anything. I’m just planting a few seeds over there. The Lord will decide if they sprout.”As you can imagine, I got a new perspective on missionary work, at least in this case. I loved working with Bob, and we got pretty good results. I think he also made me a better therapist — with a lighter, more subtle touch.

Why do many students not prefer AIIMS other than the top 4 AIIMs?

Any new institute however well funded, needs some time to matureMost new AIIMS are being hurriedly started on half built campuses with bare minimum recruits most likely freshers with little clinical / academic exposure to run the institute.Even their administration is run from nearby “established” state / central institutes.JIPMER Pondicherry is taking care of AIIMS hyderabad and PGIMER is looking after AIIMS bathinda. My alum, Gandhi Medical College is assigned with academic sessions of AIIMS hyderabad by state / central govt.Although the story is one year, you get the idea.Moral of the story: Do your homework and check ground reality before joining new colleges, doesn't matter if its AIIMS or otherwise.

Have you ever been to a restaurant that made you say “you have got to be kidding me!” when they brought out the food?

Yes!I love (absolutely LOVE) Middle easatern, Mediterranean and african food! YUMMEH! When an African restaurant opened in our town, we were among the first to try it out! One of the things on the menu was “Goat stew”. Well, I LOVE goat meat! So of course I ordered the stew. We had the wonderful puffy fluff bread that came as an appetizer, and then they delivered my bowl of goat stew.FULL (and I do mean full) of BONES! We aren’t talking little slivers… oh no. Pelvic bones, shards of leg bones, fragments of ribs, all with the meat adhering! To my surprised reaction the server (who was also the owner) said “You just eat around them! It is traditional!” Well, OK… and that is exactly what I did.The stew was, as expected, utterly delicious! The restaurant was in business to make money to fund a small hospital clinic in Africa, so of course when we finished our meal, I checked my bank account and we donated $100.00 to the clinic as well as a nice tip. We’ve eaten there a few more times, and, as a Lion, my chapter of the Lions Clubs International donated hundreds of de-labeled, cleaned medicine bottles because the clinic did not have them to give medicines to their patients. The little clinic is thriving. And I still order the goat stew. Bones and all. It’s traditional. :)
