QUESTION : Should India use Hindi as its only official language as only 10% of Indians can understand English?ANSWER : If Hindi is ONLY used as the official language of India, then it is equivalent to making people like me who completed Master of Technology in Engineering as ILLITERATES in my own country!Such a myopic policy will help the government of India to move away from people rather than reaching out to the people of India.Having said that, I would like to debunk the false claim that people make by saying only 10% of Indians can understand English in India in this answer.Let me put a data sheet from the Ministry of education.Reference Picture : Total number of students who cleared the Class 10 examination in 2016, Image Courtesy, Educational Statistics 2018, Ministry of EducationAfter analysing the data, we can come to the conclusion that 152.6 Lakhs cleared the class 10 examination in 2016.152.6 Lakhs = 1.526 CroresAll these students should have cleared the compulsory English language paper that everyone has to write to get the class 10 certificate.Using this data we can safely assume, about 20 crores students must have cleared Class 10 from 1995 to 2020.Let me do the Math here.India has a population of 130 crores and let us take a hypothetical scenario that ONLY those people who cleared class 10 from 1995 to 2020 understand English(20 crores/130 crores) x 100 = 15.38 %15.38% > 10%We haven't considered the people who cleared Class 10 from 1950 to 1995 in this calculation.If we consider the people who cleared Class 10 from 1950 to 1995, then we can easily conclude that about 30% living in India can understand English.30% >> 10%By 2030, we will see 30% of people who understands English rising to 40% and by 2040, it will become 50%.Therefore, English will continue to remain as the official language of the government of India.

Ironically, I just came back from this get-together. Everyone you see here are Bangladeshi students from Harvard and MIT. Starting from left, the ash color fat guy is me, at my back(check shirt) is a 2015 Harvard college (Maths and Computer Science) graduate, the next lady is Harvard College (Economics) graduate, The next in a 3rd year undergrad at Harvard college, red lady is a freshman at MIT (pre-med). From the right, the green T-shirt is an Astrophysics PhD student from Harvard, the next three are Harvard freshmen and the last one is Harvard 2nd year student. As of me, I go to Harvard Kennedy School (Master of Public Administration). I guess this picture answers your question whether it is possible for Bangladeshis to get into Harvard/MIT.
