And from them I have gotten the following impressions….Yes, these people are not LibArt majors themselves, but perhaps their remove gives them a different perspective.Liberal arts, aren’t liberal any more, and they are only retaining the most tenuous connections with what might have been called ‘Arts’ a generation ago.For whatever reasons, possibly fueled by state guaranteed loans, or by the endless Hollywood ‘follow your dreams’ chorus, or the changing nature of politics and the job market, the liberal arts departments of many universities have devolved into mental self-gratification dens attended en masse by spoiled, out of depth young people taking absolutely worthlesss courses taught by instructors who are there solely because they know they literally aren’t qualified or capable of doing anything else.But Toms, who in the hell are you to tell anyone the value of a course? Isn’t the whole point of a college education to expand our minds and our thinking? Surely you realize education has intrinsic worth?True, education has intrinsic worth.Indoctrination does not, at least not always.Often its just the reverse. Contrary to receiving an education, being put through a far leftist doctrinal boot camp isn’t going to make you worthy of anything. Just as going to the opposite extreme and becoming a neo-Nazi doesn’t make you worthy of anything, except perhaps mockery and revulsion.Especially when the doctrine is the kind of soft brained, syrupy rubbish that is being peddled by many Humanities departments for $80,000 a pop.Courses that once required true academic discipline and rigor, which explored Shakespeare, Socrates and Kant, which forced students to push out of their intellectual comfort zones and actually learn how to evaluate the true worth of ideas and concepts, have been supplanted by an extremely dangerous ‘studies’ plague; the sweet jam, redolent of marijuana and just a hint of coke, in which these instructors hide their ideological pills.An ideology that wants to convince people that they are either perpetrators or victims, enablers of oppression or staunch defenders of liberty, boxers or briefs—and nothing in between, no nuance, no grayness. Just an endless sermon that preaches the gospel of victim-hood and a chorus that repeats the axiom of perpetual persecution in ceaseless refrain.And to ensure that nothing can puncture this bubble inflated by the self righteous flatulence of the far left, these schools are creating ‘islands of affront’ where nothing outside of the ‘party’s’ core ideology is to be given any voice—quite opposite in fact, any dissent is blasphemy, any skepticism is bigotry. Any attempt at dispassionate, critical examination of their arguments is obviously an attempt to subvert truth.So, before plonking down a minor earl’s ransom on four years of ‘I am black/brown/yellow/red/girl/gay, therefore a victim, booo hoooo’. Ask yourself the following questions:Have you checked the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics Latest Numbers?They are telling you what you can look forward to in four years time, when the collection calls start coming in and that $80000 you borrowed doesn’t seem so tiny a sum anymore.Does the world care about your skills? Will this course teach you anything that can actually put food on the table, will that food be Ramen noodles and ketchup packets?Ask the admissions counselor if they have children, ask them what they are studying. Their attitude to this question will speak volumes.Look at the course syllabus, if it spending even ten percent of credit hours on anything ending in ‘studies’, stay away from it like the plague.If it requires you to take stuff like ‘women’s studies’, or if you see stuff like ‘post-colonial’, ‘patriarchal’, ‘neo-fascist’ or ‘gender’—just about anything that sounds overtly political, approach only with a hazmat suit on.Planning to be a journalist? Sorry kid, but ‘news’ doesn’t exist anymore, its all opinion, narrative and ratings. And unless you are easy on the eyes (boy or girl) no one gives a fig about what you say. Planning to be a writer? Who was the creepiest student you ever had, and why?
Not so much creepy, but unnerving.In a prior life, I taught an entry-level Electronic Publishing course at a local college. As I would normally do on the first day of each term, I handed out name tent cards as I took attendance, discussed the course syllabus and assignments, and shared my industry experience as it usually helped establish a modicum of street credibility with the students.As we were going over the assignments I explained that all projects, either written or designed, needed to be built in Adobe InDesign. Since they were aspiring design students, it was in their best interest to become familiar with industry standard software. As I walked around the room, Rahima*, a shy, introverted student wearing cultural attire, discreetly asked if she could use Photoshop instead of InDesign for written assignments. She made it clear that she was much more familiar with that program than she was with layout software like InDesign, but since Photoshop is also on my list of must-know tools, I granted her that option.Given the learning curve of Photoshop’s text tools, I wondered how high-maintenance Rahima was going to be. The optimist in me was willing to give her the benefit of the doubt and I was curious to see how the semester unfolded for her.As it turned out, it was a non-issue. She withdrew from the class after the second day and I didn’t see her again…that is, until the start of the next semester in early January.As I was walking past the computer lab area towards my office, I recognized her amongst a group of friends standing in the hallway. But something was different about her; she was no longer wearing her cultural attire, she had gained a bit of weight, and appeared to be much more assertive than what I remembered from before.She apparently recognized me too. As I got closer to the group, she threw up an arm, pointed at me, and said in a witty but aggressive tone, “Hey, I know you!” Not missing a step, I replied, “Yes, you were in my class for two days last term,” and kept walking. That was strange, I thought. Outwardly, it was definitely her but her persona now was of a completely different person compared to my former student. Her demeanour, her clothing, her friends…nothing about her seemed the same.I didn’t dwell on our hallway exchange too much until I reviewed my class lists for the new semester and noticed Rahima was registered in one of my classes for the Winter term, although her name didn’t show up on the list until very late in the process. The next day, her name was gone. Again, very strange.A few days later, I received an email from Dr. Sinclair*, the Chair of our department, who asked me what I knew about Rahima. It was curious timing, to say the least. I gave him a recap of my interactions with her starting from her limited attendance last term, the recent hallway encounter, and now the fact that her name ended up on one of my class lists for a day and then disappeared.Dr. Sinclair explained that another prof had filed a harassment complaint against Rahima after she was caught stalking her. On a few occasions, she would follow this instructor out to her car or call her at home in the middle of the night. Adding to her inappropriate behaviour was the fact that she hacked into the Registrar’s system and managed to enrol in my class without permission. Dr. Sinclair claimed that she was not allowed to register for certain classes, mine being one of them, but somehow she was able to get around firewalls and online security and did it anyway.None of this would have been particularly noteworthy except that high-profile shootings at post-secondary institutions were in the news at that time (Dawson College in Montreal, Virginia Tech in the US) so when Rahima’s behaviour took on a dark tone, it raised some eyebrows. Regardless of her gender and ethnicity, administration wondered if she could be the one to put our school on the map, so to speak.Consequently, a meeting was called between Rahima, her parents, and the Chair and Dean of our department to discuss next steps. She was put on probation for a year with the requirement she seek treatment for her behaviour and then, pending proof she got help, she could re-apply to the program. Her parents played the race card, unfortunately, and claimed that the only reason she was being targeted was because of her cultural background. She was put on probation nonetheless, and after the year was up, she didn’t return.There’s no doubt the optics of the situation were a challenge for the school, but their first priority has to be student and staff safety and Rahima was clearly exhibiting inappropriate behaviour.* Not his/her real name.
