Students will be provided with stipends and the internships are in varied disciplines from engineering to humanities. How do I get involved in undergraduate research while still in community college and working on my general education?Your options might feel limited, as compared to someone at a 4-year institution, but you probably have more than you think. As a community college student, you might be able to do a project directed by faculty on campus, start an independent project, or go off campus for a summer experience.If there are active research programs on your campus, those opportunities might not be widely advertised. First ask your academic advisor if they know of any, or if they are aware of any professors on campus who have directed an undergrad research project. If they give you any names, follow up as this will probably be the easiest way to find a project.If the first suggestion doesn’t work, or you’re not interested in those opportunities, ask at least three professors who teach classes related to research subjects you might be interested for their suggestions. Ideally, these will lead to a tip about on campus opportunities, or you’ll learn about an off campus research program that other students at your college have participated in.Considering an off campus programEven if there are research opportunities on your campus, consider going off campus through a summer internship program at another college, research center, government or industry lab. Know that many of these are paid positions. Although you won’t get rich through any of these programs, they will likely cover room, board, travel to and from the research site, possibly to a scientific meeting, and provide a modest stipend as well. Some programs include classes and some are all research, and last 8 to 10 weeks during a summer.Other tipsStarting your search for a summer research experience in the fall semester or early spring is important. Many applications require recommendation letters, a personal statement, and the due dates are months in advance. Cultivate professional relationship with at least three faculty members who will be able to write recommendation letters for you. You’ll need these letters for several reasons during and after your college career, but the letters will be a key advantage if you apply for research programs. Students with strong letters, even those with a lower than average GPA, are more competitive than students with lukewarm letters or those clearly written by a professor who doesn’t know the student well.And please do not let your lack of research experience discourage you from searching for a position. Most undergrad researchers start with little or no research experience—even those who are at 4-year universities. Labs wants students who are genuinely interested in the research they do, have the ability to uphold the time commitment, and those who want to learn and contribute starting from Day 1.The vast majority of undergrads have only a little high school or college instructional lab experience before starting an undergrad research project. I’ve worked with undergrads in my lab who haven’t had either of these.

There are many ways for getting internship in IIT. I will list down the possible ways for getting summer fellowship in IIT. Summer fellowship usually starts mid of May for a duration of two months. You will be provided a stipend of Rs.5000 per month.1.Applying onlineMany students throughout the country apply online. All you have to do is fill some of your basic details (like name, address,father’s name,etc), your academic details (from 10th till date your marks), your project proposal, industrial training, skills, hobbies,etc. You are also asked to upload all your mark sheets from your 10th to till date and also your bonafide. Selection is purely based on CGPA and project proposal. Two of my classmates (had CGPA more than 9.6) got by applying online.Indian Academy of SciencesThe above link is where you apply. Applications usually start by February and closing date is last week of February. Be sure that you don’t leave the project proposal column empty (even though they say its optional) Since competition is huge you must fill this. If you apply by the above link, you may get any IIT’s . Travel expenses would be provided by IIT itself but for one time only (you are advised not to go to your home town often unless it is indispensable).If you wish for specific IIT, then apply through the respective website of IIT. I am not sure whether it is offered by all IIT’s. IIT MADRAS will have its opening from February onwards. The results will be published in the department website.I have also seen advertisement regarding internship openings in IISC for SC/ST candidates. So please keep searching for any advertisements in IIT websites.2. Emailing professors of IITThis is a difficult way. Find email id of professors in department website. Mail the professor sending your resume, project proposal, your skills and also your passion towards engineering/research. The response that you get from professors is very uncertain. Be very patient when you apply as sometimes you might get frustrated.3. Getting help from your professors/ getting referralsThis way is relatively easier than the other two. You don’t have to be nine pointer. Seek help from professors of your college. Ask even teaching fellows. They might be involved in some projects that are going on in IIT and may refer you too. Asking from professors often will definitely fetch you a positive result,if not in IIT, you will get in any industry. Three of my friends got through this way.PS: If you are searching for summer internships, start searching from now itself since this the correct time (actually early). Don’t get frustrated if you don’t get one. Do some projects with your mates/learn software/prepare for GATE/GRE/prepare for campus placement. You don’t have to be master in everything.
