I am not getting what a free year means first of all. Is it like you saying 5.5 years of MBBS + 1 year extra ?See I will tell you the situation here at AIIMS BBSR.1st year do not participate in research because of time constrain and rigour curriculum. 2nd year onwards people participate in research projects. They generally approach a faculty, submit a proposal for ICMR STS. In case its approved, they do under its aegis else if not approved, they do it as an intramural project for publications in journals, both national and international with their guides/faculties. The same goes for 3rd as well as 4th year students.At AIIMS, every single faculty is involved in his/her research in collaboration with other departments/institutes. You may either join the existing project or suggest a new one and work on it.It will be tiring but you will enjoy.

Yes of course!Both KMC Manipal and Mangalore encourage research to a great extent. A lot of proposals are sent for ICMR STS and are approved too. You could do a STS project under KMC (KMC STS). Various interdisciplinary research projects are also being taken up by MBBS students! The faculty is extremely helpful and guide you through every step of your project. The infrastructure is vast and gives you a lot of opportunities to pick your topic.All the best!
