PDF Editor FAQ
If one night you found an old, lost dog who was clean and entirely sweet/tame, what would be your first three actions?
I found a younger, sweet, clean dog in back of my house. She was large ( found out later a Great Dane/Lab mix). I tried to call her, but no luck. I tried to get close to her, she backed away. Finally, I got smart and sat down on the ground. She came over to sniff me, and I got her collar in hand. She was very calm, and allowed me to get her in the pen that my dogs used to use. I looked her over, found a small abrasion on her rear leg, but nothing else. This was before micro-chipping, all I had was her old rabies tag. So, I called the vets number. Surprisingly, it was a pretty good distance from my house. They told me that yes, they had a record of that number, but never saw the dog again. They gave me the number of her owner, also a good bit away. I called the owner. She was an elderly lady, who told me that she had given the dog to her daughter. I asked for her daughters phone number, but she refused to give it to me, so I gave her my number and asked her to have her daughter get in touch with me.She called fairly soon, and I found out she lived in NYC, which is about 2 hr drive from my home. I asked her how the dog ended up at my house. Seems she was living in an apt. near the WTC. When 9/11 occurred, she lost her apt. and could not find a quick replacement that would accept her dog. So, she gave the dog to a friend to watch until she found one. I asked her where her friend lived, and she told me in a real small town in CT. I asked her the name of the town, and it was my town. That explained things. I got the friends number. When I called her and explained, she immediately said," you must be mistaken the dog is in the back yard. " I asked her to look, and she came back screaming, "OMG, the dog is gone. " I told her, I know, I have her. She apologized profusely and immediately came and got her. I was actually a little disappointed, as she was a truly beautiful, sweet and well trained dog, I would gladly have kept her.So, that's what I do when I find dogs. Assess them, make them comfortable and try to find an owner. This time, it worked well.
Why do dogs seem to dislike certain people at first sight for no obvious reason?
Reasons not obvious to you can be quite obvious to a dog. Dogs "see" the world much differently than you do. Their sense of smell may be their most important sense and within their sense of vision and visual interpretation, they are terribly sensitive to postures and body language. While the dog may be wrong about a person, they can smell pheromones and chemicals associated with stress and fear that make the dogs nervous around that person. This nervousness makes for uncertainty and uncertainty is danger. Dogs also see flitting eyes, bared teeth and false smiles, and the position of the head relative to the back and, so, can better interpret threat than most humans can do.Like others have said here...it is usually wise to trust the dog's assessment.
Is there a specific age at which a dog should enter service dog training?
Service dog organizations utilize volunteers – who must be at least 18 years old in most cases - to raise the puppies for approximately the first 12-14 months of the dog's life. You can get your service dog assessed if you: are 18 years of age or older with a diagnosed disability and require a service dog to help with tasks related to your disability. are a service dog team consisting of a minor with a diagnosed disability, a service dog and an adult service dog handler. Go to my Profile and you can find all about Dog Training material there...
