I used to fly A LOT. The bulk of trips were under two hours, and I could put up with whatever coach threw at me because I was making lots of Frequent Flyer points, and I am able to sleep on planes.On occasion, I would fly coast to coast in the US, and I could usually upgrade to First or Business Class, which made for a much more comfortable trip.I had two trips to Germany that were the real test. I flew on Delta both times, Business Class the first trip, which was like domestic First Class, and not bad at all for 15 hours in the air.The second trip on Delta was crazy. We flew out of LaGuardia on an L-1011, which blew its center engine right before Nova Scotia. Explaining we couldn’t fly to Europe without all three engines, we turned around and flew to Atalanta to get a new plane, a 767. Since many passengers had hopped off and made new arrangements, some First Class seats opened up and they asked us Million Milers if we want to move into First Class, which I did.WOW. Business Class overseas was about like domestic First Class: wider seat, a foot rest, better food, etc. The First Class Overseas area was something else altogether: leather flight-ready Laz-E-Boy recliners that seemed scattered about, not in rows so much; larger, nicer, bathrooms with cloth hand towels; one flight attendant to three passengers, great food, real silverware and linens and best of all—all the booze you could ask for. Seemed like they wanted NO First Class Passenger to be anywhere near sober from wheel up to “We’re beginning our descent…”! Not to mention the little bag full of goodies like a sleeping mask, earplugs, toiletries, etc. Wonderful experience for the wage-slave-who-got-a-lucky-break.Actually, a little too plush otherwise. College especially including Community College education should be an investment the government is willing to make in future tax payers welfare and the future tax collection and independence of government poverty assistance that education brings.I am a heartless economist, my arguments are that the Government would be better off for making this investment in everyone’s future. Yes it also has many social benefits, but sometimes these benefits are qualitative or quantitative to individuals; what I am arguing here is that measured from the governments angle of expenditures (on education and law enforcement) and tax collection (of worker income) the government will long term (over the tax paying lifetime of citizens) be better off even without considering the social benefits of improved welfare of citizens. If the economic conclusion form the government’s point of view is that it is a worth while investment - then then social and individual benefits are just lots of extra gravy that make the argument even more obvious though measuring these extra benefits is not needed in order to show that this is the right thing to do. We should be investing in our nations future, not our nations demise as a prison state and self appointed penal colony.Community colleges need increased funding, and students need access to more flexible federal and state financial aid, enhanced paid internships and college work-study programs. Improved access to public supports, like food stamps and reduced public transportation fares, would also make a world of difference.Unconditional Universal Basic Income would be another way to help fund Community College and other work training for an economically better future for all of us, though that may for now be a dream, funding Community Colleges to make them free would be a right step in the correct direction and the future of our nation.Community Colleges are actually something that could help everyone in the US, particularly those who are poor or jobless and need an education in order to fill the available jobs in our modern economy. It is about helping everyone along. Economically we are actually in this boat together it is consumer demand (form those who are currently too poor to provide this demand) that will drive our economy forward. We need to help everyone forward, the poor whites as well as those poor because of systemic discrimination. We should be part of creating a larger consumer demand to foster an even larger American economy for all of us.
