PDF Editor FAQ

Should 1st year MBBS student watch preplader/marrow Ana/Phy/bio videos In addition to college lecture?

Last year, the greater part of 1st year of 2019 batch was online, which made us think, that if we have to attend lectures online, why not attend lectures of Marrow and PrepLadder faculties instead. Most of us fell for the lucrative offers of such platforms given last year, and jumped into the bandwagon of buying them in the first year itself.Answering the question, NO (at least not all the first year videos)If you have already bought marrow/PrepLadder in the first year, use it only to solve MCQs of first year subjects.First year subject videos covered on such platforms are only meant for revision. (Although Biochemistry videos of Marrow are pretty decent.)Use the first year of your med. school to develop a habit of reading standard books and making notes instead. Also, attending college lectures helps you realise what all topics are important for your university exams. However, some online sources are a lifesaver. For physiology, I paired up reading Guyton and AK Jain with watching NinjaNerd and/or Dr. NajeebFor biochemistry, I did watch marrow videos and paired them up with reading Lippincott for metabolism and molecular BiochemistryAnatomy! Any channel which covers dissection and osteology videos are good. Dr. Rose for Embryology was a blessing for me(since I never paid attention to that subject). Dr. Najeeb for Neuroanatomy was good as well.Bottom line, if your college has got good professors, never miss their lectures(same applies for the lectures taken by HODs). Other than that, self study and ‘drowning into extensive books’ is the most important practice you need to develop from the first year itself.

What are some study plans for the MBBS 1st year?

Thanks for A2A.I'll segregate this answer in two parts, Do’s and Don'ts.Do’s.Read standard books.Complete your journals on time.Pay proper attention during dissection. Learn most of your practical anatomy here.Concentrate on physiology practicals. Make sure you know the calculations and methods of hematology experiments.Biochemistry practicals are sure shot. Learn principle, observation and conclusion by heart. You cannot afford to lose marks here.Make notes of important topics. Notes should be short and precise.Draw and practice diagrams in anatomy as much as you can.Take your class tests seriously and solve your doubts, if any.Refer YouTube for the topics like ECG, cardiac cycle, etc, if they are difficult to be understood.Discuss regularly with your friends/studymates and revise.Don'ts:Do not neglect subjects like embryology and histology.Don't fall into peer pressure.Don't mix up answers during viva. If you don't know the answer, say sorry.Never leave any question unattempted in your theory exams. Write whatever you know, even if you know the basics.Don't try to read and mug up each and every line of textbooks. If you're a human, you'll never be able to complete important topics, let alone syllabus.Never argue with lab technicians, let alone professors.Do not try to copy/bring chits in exam. I've seen a student getting debarred for 3 years after he was caught with chits in university exams. So it's better to be safe than sorry!Don't draw histology diagrams just for completion of journal. Those diagrams are important and those will fetch you more marks than just writing theory.Don't forget to revise bones and general anatomy! We often miss these and end up getting confused subsequently. Revise by discussing it with friends.Don't be afraid to ask a doubt. If there is, clear it out. It is good to be a fool for a few minutes rather than being a fool for lifetime.I think I've summarized each and every point in this answer. At the end, you just have to be regular and meticulous with your studies and you'll definitely ace your exams!Good luck!

Medical School: What are the best books for MBBS 1st year?

Two disclaimers:First, try heading to the library or pulling up soft copies of books to understand what books you actually like. Self awareness is very important. If your reading speed isn't high, there is no point in buying bulky books you know you won't be able to finish.Second, I don't think there's more than a 10% difference between any two books written by an Indian author, since their purpose is the same: to fetch you marks in an examination. And believe me when I say that it is easier to pass your final exams than it is to fail them.Anatomy:Vishram Singh: I used this book for gross anatomy, and in my opinion, it is much better than BDC. Everyone who has used BDC knows that the topic of Head and Neck is a disaster in that book, and that's where Vishram stands out.Moore's clinical anatomy: The blue clinical boxes at the end of each topic are awesome and informative. (Gray's is a wonderful substitute for this book, too!)Langman's Embryology: I think this book is more than enough to grasp the basics of embryology. I also liked Moore's embryology after reading a chapter of it from the PDF. Either one of the above two books works.Snell's Neuroanatomy: Vishram Singh's neuroanatomy didn't appeal to me, mainly because of the vast amount of information to be memorised. Don't be misguided by the size of the book: a majority of it is filled with diagrams and flowcharts.Netter's Atlas: I (rarely) used it to visualise the theory I was studying from Vishram. My only regret is I didn't use this book as much as I should have.Difiore's Histology: I had bought this book but ended up not using it even once. Histology files had to be made in college, and that was my main study material for the subject.PhysiologyI used the combination of Guyton and Ganong for majority of my first year.Guyton : It is a wonderful book for understanding physiology, but it fails to present information in a manner that can be retained. As a result, I found myself being unable to recall information from that book.Ganong: I read Ganong after reading a topic from Guyton. It's a pretty hard book to finish, so I'd recommend doing atleast General, Nerve-Muscle and CNS physiology from this book during first year.Costanzo: I read only CVS from this book, and in my opinion, it is a much better substitute to Guyton.AK Jain: This is one book I absolutely regret buying. I was told by many people that it's hard to pass an exam without AK Jain (or any other Indian author), and hence, bought it due to FOMO. CVS was the first and the last topic I tried reading from AK Jain.BiochemistryI used the combination of Harper and Lippincott for most topics and Vasudevan just before an exam. Contrary to popular opinion, I feel that is subject is very conceptual and extremely underrated.Harper: This was my go-to book for studying chemistry and metabolism.Lippincott: Lipoprotein and cholesterol metabolism as well as genetics are much easier to understand from Lippincott.I would advise reading a topic from Lippincott to get its basic overview, and then reading the same topic from Harper to get a complete picture.Vasudevan: I chose Vasudevan simply because it was tiny compared to SK Gupta. That being said, I hardly did use Vasudevan. Harper and Lippincott were pretty much enough. This is my two cents on this topic. All the best!
