PDF Editor FAQ

A large share of Fortune 500 CEOs are graduates of Stanford, Harvard, Yale, MIT, Princeton, Wharton. What gives?

In the first place you have to understand that kids admitted to say Stanford are quite exceptional to begin with. Not only are they much smarter than average, but in order to be admitted they have to exhibit lots of other credentials that generally reflect ambition, hard-work, dedication, etc. There is a reasonable debate as to whether these schools create "value-added" in the sense that the kids acquire skills that they would not have had had they not gone to college. Almost certainly they do. The subsidiary question is whether they come out stronger than if the same students had gone to a typical State U. There's no real answer to that question except to say that some probably benefit tremendously from the elite educational and social environment and some don't. On average I suspect that the same student would benefit more, maybe much more, from having gone to Stanford than to say Fresno State. But I can't prove it, and my belief may be more affected by what I want to believe than actual information. In any case it's quality in and quality out. Think of elite colleges as screening devices for major careers. As others have pointed out elite education does provide a network of peers and other alumni who can be helpful in the outside world. And while in college generally the other students at Harvard are going to be more intellectually and perhaps socially stimulating than those at UMass. Graduates of elite colleges may find it easier to get into elite law, medical and business schools, not necessarily because of overt bias but because their university provides more opportunities for the kids to get experiences that look good on a graduate school application. And I suspect some companies would rather have a Yale graduate than a UConn one, but that advantage which is probably slight will disappear quickly in the business environment. For one example, in Silicon Valley it is definitely an advantage in hiring if your undergrad or grad degree is from Stanford, but there may be many reasons for that. The question you need to ask (although it has no answer) is whether people of equivalent abilities and other traits do better from an elite place than from a non-elite. My guess is that they do, but the advantages are fairly minor. In any case there are plenty of CEOs who went to state universities although for the most part they managed to "make up" for that by having MBA or law degrees from more prestigious places. The issue of elite vs. non-elite education has been the subject of many discussions on this board. The consensus conclusion (with which I agree) is that can get a great education at any reasonable college if you're willing to work hard and take advantage of opportunities, but that it is probably easier at an elite place for a variety of reasons. I certainly would defend elite education, but having gone to a non-elite college and done reasonably well I certainly don't think it's necessary for success and may not be cost-effective for many students.

I have a CSU GPA of 2.8 and I got 1000 on the SAT. What colleges do I have a good chance at getting accepted in?

csusm, csudh, csuf, cpp, csula, sfsu, csueb, csumb, Fresno state, humbolt state, stanislaus, Sacramento state, Chico state, and probably more. Any cal state with an acceptance rate of 50% or over I think you have a shot at getting into. Don’t apply to SLO, Csulb, or SDSU. Not to be harsh but those schools won’t even look at applications under a 3.5 gpa. I had a 3.75 gpa and a 1200 sat and was rejected from SDSU and cal poly SLO. Waitlisted at csulb and ultimately rejected.

Which one is correct, what school do you go to or what school are you going to?

What school do you go to is present text English. If in college and I get the question the answer is I go to Fresno State where I play football for the bulldogs. What school are you going to is future text English for the most part. Commonly used after seniors in high school have heard back from colleges after the application period.
