Since this question is specific to research internships, I would stick to it and answer accordingly. From my experience, I would advise you to keep the following points in mind while drafting a Statement of Purpose for research internship-Most important thing about research internships is how well are you able to sell your previous undergraduate research (provided you have some experience). Highlight the key projects that you did as a part of your undergraduate curriculum or even other than the curriculum which would be relevant to your professor’s area of interest. It is very obvious that if you have a publication, you should mention it.If you don’t have a solid research background, but have good grades in courses relevant to your area of interest. Make it a point to underscore them. You can add something like - “I was in the top 5% of the class in the Digital Image Processing course, and my course project on Joint Desmoking and Denoising of Images received special appreciation from the course instructor. In this project… I implement what I had learnt in the course…”Emphasize on the technical skills (for eg- MATLAB, LABView, C++, AVR etc.) which are pertinent to the field you are applying to. Don’t just mention them. Explain them in a detailed manner so that the professor can be sure that you know them and are not faking it. For example - “During my second year summer break, I had gotten myself acquainted with the basics of AVR programming. In the following semester, I took up various courses such as Microprocessors and Embedded Systems to explore deeper into the understanding of micro-controller programming.”If you were a part of technical teams such as Student Satellite Team or the team which makes race car for various competitions, and if your professor’s work is in any way related to the work you did in the team, lay proper emphasis on it. Even if the work is not related, you can always say - “Working in such technical teams gave me a flavor of how working in a research group would be like - helping other students while taking help from seniors in order to tackle challenging problems.”You can also probably mention some of your extraordinary high-school achievements such as International Olympiads or scholarships that you might have received. For example, whenever I write any SoP, I make it a point to mention - “My enthusiasm for exploring diverse areas of science led me to represent India in the 5th International Earth Sciences Olympiad (2011) held in Modena, Italy where I won a silver medal for my country.”One last advice- Keep it as technical as possible. Cut the bullshit. Don’t write philosophical shit like - “Ever since childhood I had dreamt of becoming an aerospace engineer…”. Trust me, nobody pays heed to it. You are what you are according to your achievements, projects, research, grades, and other things on your CV. So, keep your Statement as information-dense as possible.In case you have further specific doubts, you can ping me.
