When I buy groceries in Tennessee, the bill is always noticeably lower than when I buy groceries in New Jersey. The same brands have a lower price there.What’s the difference? Wages! The average supermarket has 50 minimum or near-minimum wage workers on the clock. In TN, thats $7.25 per hour, and in NJ that’s $12 per hour. If both stores are open from 7am to 10pm (15 hours a day) that’s 750 man-hours per store per day.Since grocery stores are open 7 days a week, that’s 22,500 man-hours per month. That means the TN store’s minimum wage payroll is $163k for the month, while the NJ store’s is $270k.It costs $107k more per month to run the NJ store, just because of the minimum wage difference.That extra $107k a month has to come from somewhere. That’s why I pay more for groceries in NJ than I pay in TN.Now, what happens when we force both of those stores up to $15 per hour? Under the same conditions, that raises the monthly payroll for both stores to $337k — a $67k increase for the NJ store and a $174k increase for the TN store. Per month.Oh, wait, there’s a problem with my math here. I’m only counting the people who are near current minimum wage — I didn’t count the people who make more than that, but less than $15. If we bump everyone in the store up to $15, that’s another 20 people on the clock that I didn’t include. That pushes payroll up to $472k per month.The problem with you guys who support this stuff is that you never do the math at scale. You look at the rate in a vacuum. “Oh, it’s only $6, they can afford it.” Yeah, did you realize that “only $X” jump means every individual store now needs to come up with another $3.7 million a year just to make payroll? That a chain with 250 stores needs to find an extra $925 million?A chain like Publix, which operates in the south where wages are low, has 1,264 stores, 9 distribution centers, 11 manufacturing facilities, and employs 225,000 people. Go ahead, check the math on what this is going to cost them…Something’s gotta give, guys. Either prices are going up, jobs are going away, or some combination of both. There’s no way around it.And this is just grocery stores, I’m not even factoring in the ripple effect across the entire supply chain. Food copackers, the guys who load the trucks, fuel, etc. Everyone who touches those goods before they even get to the store is going to be adjusting their prices, and the stores will raise the price on the shelf to compensate for that too.Approximately 42% of American workers currently make less than $15 per hour.
