PDF Editor FAQ

Why did you decide to double or triple major in college, did it help you even though you ended up pursuing something unrelated?

I chose business economics as a major at UC Santa Barbara based upon my declared major during the application to UC. My uncle advised on my application to college, and he also advised on what majors to declare at specific universities in UC, CSU, and SCU. I followed through in that major until graduation. I minored during that college experience in philosophy because of a family interest in religion and Catholicism, my friend Steve who majored in it and transferred to UC Los Angeles, and some personal interest. I continued to study philosophy after graduation because I enjoy the subject and felt there were some areas I could develop in mind, language, and social ontology.I chose mathematics as a college major after UC Santa Barbara because I was unsatisfied with my GPA the first time. And that motivated me to read my high school transcripts, which indicated that I had a good track in math. I could have applied to business school at a state university, though decided to reconstruct the math curricula from transfer at lower division, and then to take the upper division at USF. My decision to study math was based upon a state decision, insofar as that transcript is from a California high school. This coupled with I could have majored in math at UC Santa Barbara but didn’t from my integral calculus professor. I minored in computer science because that was the first major I declared to transfer into at USF, but decided to take the path in math. My family recommended I study computer programming for skills for a job, so I minored in it to balance my math interest and programming skills.I chose statistics as a master’s program based upon my cousin’s feedback about statistics as in demand, and his own career in biostatistics. He studied economics to the master’s level in a bachelor’s and master’s combined program from BU. He then applied into a PhD in biostatistics which he has presently already finished. I applied to an REU in biostatistics at NCSU, funded by NIH and NCATS, to attract students to come into the undersupplied field of biostatistics for medicine, health science, and clinical trails. I wanted to study a broader mathematical discipline than biostatistics, so I opted for statistics. It didn’t end well because I spread my studies into computer science, and also experimented on my doctoral qualifying courses, replacing 5 of them. I also lost motivation to study for doctorate statistics by the time it was my 3rd year, so I went back to more basic research in community college studies.I did apply for a master’s in mathematics after the statistics one, though I did not even attempt the core courses or required ones in pure math. I was still somewhat distracted and taking courses related to my past studies in philosophy, computer science, and statistics, which didn’t give faculty the time to see if I had potential to study for a PhD in math. I left the master’s program then and started studying at community college in Vietnamese, mostly because I was interested in studying my native language and halting development in English for the time being. I was discontinued from the master’s in statistics and disqualified master’s in mathematics, so taking community college courses was a better use of time to gauge my commitment.I have since put time into learning accounting, which is my major coursework from business economics that I didn’t do well in. And that I saw I could develop and increase the grade points, especially as it applies more tangibly to my financial future. My family owns a small business invested in real estate, and it is pretty easy to see accounting even at the basic level with management and real estate courses, will be enough to talk to people with those assets. The master’s in statistics or master’s in mathematics is intended for people who want to be professionals, meaning that job is their income. These apply to businesses, government, or education. The master’s in statistics explicitly trains for doctoral application in related quantitative disciplines or professional in industry, somewhat vague. And the master’s in mathematics trains for future community college professors, or those who will apply for the PhD in math. These are both professional careers I haven’t shown I have the dedication to maintain the state of the courses, so I will study more basic ones and see if I want to reapply. The last point I’ll write is that my general education has always been good, meaning that the courses I take from various departments for the areas of general education have been excellent. I think that overall for multiple majors and minors, that general education is most important. It is what binds them together into a college and graduate school setting, and the common knowledge for all majors.
