PDF Editor FAQ

How should I respond to the question "Why should we choose you over the other candidates?" In an interview for a foreign exchange scholarship?

My advice is to take a step back and look at the interview from the point of view of the exchange program. They are searching for applicates who will succeed abroad and through that help them succeed. A successful exchange student:Learns the languageImmerses themselves in the cultureParticipates in schoolCompletes their exchange year (isn't sent home, for example because they were expelled from their school)So, with the exchange programs goals in mind, some characteristics you might want to exhibit are:You are interested in learning a foreign language. If you have taken a class in your preferred host country's language, or any language for that matter, make sure you mention it.You are truly interested in your host country and it's culture. Perhaps you great great grandparents emmigrated from there. You're a good student. (You don't have to be a smart or a genius by any means, but studiousness, or the lack of it, will be noticed.)Maturity. Nothing hurts an exchange student organization more than having to send students back to their home country early. Don't give off the impression that your hot headed or looking for a year of partying in Europe. To conclude, I want to restate two of pieces of advice from earlier posts.Be open and outgoing. People showing these two qualities are more likely to go out and meet new people, see new places, and grow.Be excited. Show that you yourself want to do this. That the motivation and energy needed to become and be an exchange student come from you(not your parents).Lastly... Remember: the interview doesn't start in the interview room, it starts as soon as you drive into the parking lot.

What are some questions judges ask you on foreign exchange interviews?

As a high school exchange student currently in Germany, these are the questions I would expect a good exchange program interview panel to ask:What would you do if you felt hopelessly sad?How do you deal with anger? When was the last time you failed and what did you learn from it?How do you handle being alone?(Like Joachim said)If you had a problem with your host family who would you go to in order to reconcile the problem? What are the three things you value most in life? How would you go about making new friendships in your new home?In addition, I was asked questions involving situations and context. For example: Your local friends are going to McDonald's after school today across the border in Switzerland. To get there you have to first walk through a farm on the border. What would you do?(If you are a high school student or younger planning to go on exchange, and you're never asked any questions regarding emotional intelligence/maturity, I would advise you to look into a different study abroad program.)Further, the questions you should expect to be asked depend on the type of foreign exchange program you are applying for. High School? Or university? A university exchange program would assume their applicants to have much more emotional intelligence than a high school exchange program would. And, of course, if you going to be in a university exchange program you will get a lot more freedom in return for your maturity.I bold emotional intelligence because that is what marks a good student exchange candidate. Exchange programs want to know that you won't waste the chance to study abroad by spending every day drunk(there are many other ways you can waste a study abroad too). However this is what many immature exchange students will do.When answering questions, show the panel that you think this is the most life changing, incredible experience you've ever had the chance to undertake, and you will take advantage of every second. Then you will be their best candidate.

What was it like to program commercial MS-DOS applications in assembly language?

Actually it wasn't that bad. The IBM Tech Ref was an open door to the BIOS so you could pretty much do anything you wanted in ASM86, and it wasn't too long before you had a decent library of procs to pull from. Memory paging was a real pain in the *&& - but you could fit a lot of code in just a few K. Many ASM86 programmers went on to use PL/M-86 which was close enough to ASM86 that most of us could tell what machine code (ASM86) would be generated so it was like a "super-macro" language. On the negative side - no GUI so every interaction with the user was a new adventure - and you didn't have a hundred different text editors to choose from. One of the first things I wrote was a text editor "look-alike" of the IBM CMS editors we used in school. - I love Visual Studio, .NET etc. and everything is definitly much easier now, and I constantly think "sure wish I had this back in 1984" and "programmers today have it so easy" - but I also wish I could (easily) throw in a few direct calls to the HD controller or NIC instead of dancing around all "the other apps" that may be running. ;-)
