How was your experience on a German student visa interview?

I had my Visa Interview for a German National Visa - Student Visa - today (August 7, 2019) at the Chennai German Mission, for my Master’s studies. Since I found some answers on Quora useful, I am writing this elaborate post on the entire process of applying for the visa in Chennai and the interview day.I got the Admission letter for my intended Master’s Program in Germany on July 23, 2019. This was quite late already, because Winter Semester starts on October 1 and lectures on October 14, and I was recommended by my university to enrol before lectures begin. I didn’t know jackshit about the Visa Application process till mid-July. When I found out students need the National Visa (for stays longer than 90 days) which could take upto 12 weeks for the entire process, I was scared stiff about my chances of reaching Germany on time. Once I had ithe offer, I checked the Chennai Mission’s website for the Student Visa document Checklist and began preparing for the appointment.I already had an offer from a couple of months back, from another German university which wasn’t my priority. But I foolishly waited till I got the offer for the program I desired before starting with the checklist preparation,Pro tip : Even if you haven’t received your offer of admission, please visit the consulate webpage well in advance and find out what documents you can have ready in order to quickly apply for an appointment thereafter. The Official Checklist, as prepared in Febraury 2017 :Valid passport (ppt)1 copy of ppt datapage3 ppt photoscover letteradmission letterproof of fee paymentproof of language proficiencyproof of academic qualificationsproof of financial meanstravel health insuranceYou need one set of original documents in this list — which may be required only for reference, and will not be taken in the consulate - and TWO more copy sets, which are what you submit to the interviewing officer. The copies must be of the SIGNED original documents. Before the interview I had photocopies taken and I had signed them like fresh forms but I took copies of the signed ones later and they were accepted. I also self-attested my passport data page just in case.GETTING DOCUMENTS READY :4. Cover letter must have name. dates and duration and language of instruction of the program, details of financial means - blocked account or sponsorship details, academic qualifications - upto class 10, and intended date of departure.6. fee payment proof is required if the program has tuition fee. I had no tuition fee, but I still submitted proof of payment of semester fee to be on the safer side (???).7. TOEFL/IELTS for english course (like mine). Adequate German proficiency for German course.8. Original/provisional degree certificate, final transcript, class 12 marksheet, class 10 marksheet9. If there’s no tuition fee - Blocked account letter is sufficient. I had one from Kotak Mahindra Bank which took 7 working days to get after I pressed them constantly (It almost always takes longer). I got one for 853 euros/month even though the consulate webpage said that was effective since Sept 1,2019. Upon enrolling in my university, I will be required to have 853/month instead of the presently accepted 720/month. It is wiser to have 853/month blocked now itself to avoid issues in the future, and this notion is endorsed by the consulate also. If there’s a tuition fee you will need sponsorship letter with notary public attestation. It’s also good to have 3 year IT returns, and 6 months’ bank statement of the sponsor in that case along with their identification copies.10. checklist mentions insurance for “approximately 3 months” but the consulate required one for 6 months. luckily, the interviewer said they didn’t need the travel insurance document now and said I will receive an email with instructions on when and how to submit that.CAUTION : The duly filled and signed Visa application form and declaration form are not mentioned in the checklist but you need to have one originally signed and 2 photocopies of those documents as well. DO NOT STICK PHOTOS IN THE APPLICATION FORMS, that will be done by an official in the consulate.11. Demand draft : Please search the webpage for the latest article on Visa Fees. Fees must be payed in INR through a DD only. Unfortunately for me, the Visa fee changed on the day I issued a DD. I had read another blog post where a student submitted a DD issued before a similar fee change and it was accepted and difference in fee returned. Today at the consulate no such thing happened. People with DDs for the earlier fee amount were asked to issue a DD again with the latest fee amount, and submit it to the consulate within 2 hours after the interview. It was good I didn’t take chances with that and got the DD changed that same day I issued it. However, there are TWO PUBlIC BANKS CLOSE TO THE CONSULATE, and it is advisable to take the same amount in cash to the interview just in case.Note : The DD I issued in INDIAN BANK, which is one of the banks close to the consulate, had no space for the full name of the payee. The last 10 characters were handwritten by the bank staff and attested, causing me unnecessary worry as to whether it’d be accepted. It is accepted and not an issue at all.FIXING AN APPOINTMENT IN CHENNAI :If you have an unconditional offer letter (it will be clearly mentioned as “UNCONDITIONAL” in the letter, otherwise it is NOT most likely), you can contact VFS Chennai and submit the documents to them and “skip the waiting time for an appointment” according to the webpage. I also called the consulate to confirm this but I have no experience with this procedure.Unfortunately, I had a conditional letter - I needed to have German proficiency at the END OF MY FIRST YEAR. So I needed to book an appointment with the Consulate directly and have an interview. In Chennai, you can reserve an interview slot online from the consulate webpage without going through VFS, unlike in Mumbai or New Delhi. It is shocking and ordinary to find absolutely no slots on the webpage for two or three months, Remember : it takes 4–6 weeks after your appointment to know the status of your Visa. Book appointments accordingly. Here are some tips to book an appointment, based on my own observations:Every night at 3:30 am Indian Time, slots apparently get CREATED for the next available date - usually about 45 to 50 days from the date of checking. All interview slots for that day are shown to be available. If you start well in advance, an appointment can be easily booked in a day this way. E.g, on Aug 1, I saw ALL slots created and available for September 27, almost 2 months away.At around 3:45 am IST, some cancelled slots are shown for earlier dates. These are typically closer to the date created. E.g, on Aug 1, I saw 2–4 slots available on sept 13, 17, 23,24,25 also.By 9 am in the morning these slots get completely booked. Refreshing the page around this time will again show no available slots for the next 2–3 months.Between 3–5 pm, you are highly likely to see cancelled slots for the immediately following day or days. E.g., on July 25 I saw 1 or 2 slots open for July 26, and on July 26, for 27. On Aug 5, I saw slots 3–4 slots open for Aug 6,7 and 8. I grabbed a slot on 7th and likewise these slots get taken in minutes.these are my observations after I kept checking the webpage religiously, every 5–10 minutes night and day for available slots, for one full week. I recommend Autofill extension in google chrome to grab the slot. Slots were also not shown on the webpage on Friday and Saturday, I was really tensed by that.VISA INTERVIEW :My slot was 9:40 - 10:00. I was allowed to enter only at 9:20 am. There are lockers for cell phones and wallets, but bags aren’t allowed. Upon entering, I was handed a document checklist with the order of arrangement, and 3 forms to fill - Additional Contact form, DAAD survey form, agreement to have 853 euros per month in blocked account since Jan 2020.An official collected the 2 copy sets from me after I arranged them, stuck my photos on the application form and gave me a token number for the interview. A total of 3 photos was asked of me even though checklist on webpage asks for 3 sets of 3 photos. A person ahead of me did not have photos w.r.t. biometric requirements and was asked to leave and book an appointment again. There’s a waiting time of around 1 hour for everyone for the interview slot. During my slot, I submitted the documents and my passport and was asked a few basic questions on my program, proficienccy in German and English, reason for choosing this program, career plan after my Master’s. My travel health insurance was not returned and I was asked to submit it later with insturctions sent to me by email. All copy documents have to be in A4 sheets no matter how big or small the originals are. I was asked to submit an a4 photocopy of my class 10 marksheet (A3) after the interview. My DD was accepted and a Visa Fee Receipt was issued. I was told that I will have to wait for an email on the status of my Visa and it could take “4–6 weeks”. I heard from past applicants that it takes around 25 days on average. It was a pleasant experience overall.DM for questions. Best of luck.Update : I received an email from the Chennai consulate 18 days after my Visa Interview stating that my visa will be approved if and when I produce the following documents during stamping :Approval emailVisa Fee ReceiptProof of intended travel date - blocked flight ticketTravel insurance for 3 months (Interviewer had asked me to get it for 6 months)Copy of degree certificate.
