PDF Editor FAQ

What was the strangest thing you discovered when you moved into a new home?

My mother was a real estate agent and frequently bought properties she’d fix up and flip — long before the shows on HGTV made such practices popular. We’d lived in 19 homes by the time I got out of high school because she bought placed she liked and they were good for her weekly parties — her main way of prospecting. But I digress . . .So basically, she was into buying properties as inventory which she could invest in as a good way to make money fairly quickly if she did it right. And, she usually did, too.One time she bought a property that was an inn during the revolutionary war days. I knew the property because a childhood friend of mine lived there and I had visited the property on many occasions when I was younger. It was unoccupied when my mom bought it. It was wintertime. And the furnace went out. The pipes burst and water damage was extensive. By this time I was in college but lived close enough so I had easy access to the property.First find . . . the first floor floorboards were destroyed when the pipes burst. During the clean up process, skeletal remains were found. The police were called and, after a bit of forensic examination, it was concluded they were very old and likely the remains of someone who’d been murdered and buried under the floorboards.Second find . . . in the basement, there was an old wine cellar. In it, we found some very old wine bottles from the 1890’s. The wine was vinegar but the bottles were cool.To remove the wine bottles, I had to go into a small room off the main room of the basement which then led to another room where the wine cellar was actually located. As I went into the second room / wine cellar the flashlight I was using flickered and stopped working. I left that room, found another flashlight and returned to the wine cellar. The same thing happened with the new flashlight. So I went out . . . found a candle and matches and returned to the wine cellar. I lit the candle and, again, the candle goes out! I’m thinking, “OK, this is really weird and very frustrating”. I go out again, re-light the candle and return to the inner room. This time, the candle stays lit but my friend puts her hand on my shoulder and gave me a good, solid squeeze, I said, “Hey Sandy, stop it . . . that’s not funny!” At that moment, the candle goes out again and my friend, Sandy says, “What are you talking about?” The only problem was she was not in the wine cellar — she was in the main room of the basement and there was no way she could have grabbed my shoulder. Needless to say . . .That was the end of our ‘explorations’ that day and I didn’t return to the house for some time after that. I can’t explain it but it was definitely unnerving!

Where are the remains of the millions of native Americans throughout the Americas who died of diseases such as smallpox brought by European invaders? Surely there must be skeletal remains of hundreds of thousands of them everywhere. Where are they?

In addition to Brian Collins’s answer, it’s important to point out a couple things. One is that many tribes practiced air burial. That is, they left corpses of loved ones exposed to the elements and scavengers, then moved on. These people would be distributed all over the place.Another is that there is a large amount of Native remains that we know of; enough that Congress passed the NAGPRA in 1990 to protect them. The Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act ensures that tribal heritage related to their buried ancestors and their effects will be respected. So if you found Native remains, and it could be ascertained (perhaps through things buried with the person) that they were of a particular tribe, then the remains would be repatriated to that tribe. They can’t always tell, though, so as part of this act, the Department of the Interior keeps databases of Native American remains that could not be linked to any modern peoples (not that they were mystery tribes, just that we can’t tell.)Culturally Unidentifiable Native American Inventory DatabaseYou can search by state, but remains are all over the place.

What are the lesser known facts about Hindu temples (or any other religious place)?

The mysterious caveTwo temples: A temple of northern district (Kasargod) and another temple of southern district (Thiruvananthapuram) of Kerala are connected through an underground cave. There is a story behind this.Divakara Muni Vilwamangalam, the great Brahmin sage, did penance and performed poojas. Legend has it that one day Lord Vishnu appeared before him as a child. The boy’s face was glowing with radiance and this overwhelmed the sage. He became anxious and asked who he was. The boy replied that he had no father no mother and none at home. Vilwamangalam felt pity for the boy and allowed him to stay there. The boy proposed a condition that whenever he feels humiliated he will leave the place at once. He served the sage for sometime. But soon his juvenile pranks became intolerable for the sage and he reacted violently. Humiliated the boy disappeared from there after proclaiming that if Vilwamangalam wants to see him he would have to go to Ananthankat, the forest of serpent god Anantha. Vilwamangalam soon realized that the boy was none but the lord himself and he had great repentance. He found a cave at the place where the boy disappeared and he proceeded further into the cave in search of the boy. He reached the sea and proceeded further toward the south and at last he reached a woody area near the sea. Vilwamangalam saw the child who soon disappeared into huge illippa tree (Indian butter tree or Mahua tree). Immediately the tree fell down and assumed the shape of Lord Vishnu lying on a thousands hooded serpent.Ananthapuram TempleSo the Ananthapuram temple is situated at place where Vilwamangalam met the boy at first time and spent the time with him.It is built in the middle of a lake.Ananthapadmanabha templeThe Ananthapadmanabha temple is situated at the place where the boy appeared after disappearing from Ananthapuram temple. This is one of the richest temple.Interesting facts about these temple1) A vegetarian crocodileThis crocodile named Babiya is found in Ananthapura temple in Kasargod, Kerala. There is a legend about this crocodile. He is considered to be the guardian of this lake temple. When that crocodile dies, another one automatically takes guard and appears mysteriously. It is also said that the crocodile has been living for the past 150 years as only one crocodile is seen at a time. This is a harmless, pure vegetarian crocodile and does not even kill the fish in the lake. The priests feed the crocodile after the Ucha Pooja / Noon Pooja with gruel of rice and jaggery. The crocodile comes there at that time, has the food offered and again goes back to the cave which is present close by. Around 67 years back the British had killed the crocodile. However one more crocodile appeared next day. Nobody knows the source of crocodile since there are no rivers or lakes near by. The crocodile is harmless. Everyday the temple worshiper presents food to crocodile around 12PM. The name of crocodile is Babiya. If worshiper calls crocodile with its name nearby cave, the crocodile silently comes and have food.2) The treasure of Ananthapadmanabha swamy templeThe Sree Anantha Padmanabhaswamy temple in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, captured world headlines when vast wealth was discovered in its vaults, catapulting it to the position of the world’s richest temple. The wealth came to light as a result of on-going litigation concerning control of the ancient temple. The Supreme Court of India ordered an inventory of the temple’s six sacred vaults. Four of the vaults, which are opened regularly, contained no surprises. The remaining two, denoted A and B by the court and said to be unopened for centuries, caused great excitement. A media frenzy ensued after vault A was opened in the presence of a committee appointed by the court. Heaps of gold coins, hundreds of big gold chains, crowns, Deities and other precious valuables of antiquity lay buried under broken dusty cabinets. News of the “treasure” dominated TV screens and newspapers. In no time, fake photos circulated on the Internet. Rumored figures of the value of the wealth neared 38 billion dollars. The flow of misinformation, so called expert analysis and suggestions for use of this wealth have continued since. The Supreme Court explicitly rejected all hypothetical estimates valuing the find: “What is appearing in the newspapers is just surmises and conjectures.”3) Size of the Deity(Idol of Anantha pathmanabha swamy temple)The Deity is visible through three doors –the visage of the reclining Lord and Siva Linga underneath the hand is seen through the first door; Sridevi and Divakara Muni in Katusarkara, Brahma seated on a lotus emanating from the Lord's navel, hence the name, "Padmanabha", gold abhisheka moorthies of Lord Padmanabha, Sridevi and Bhudevi, and silver utsava moorthi of Padmanabha through the second door; the Lord's feet, and Bhudevi and Kaundinya Muni in Katusarkara through the third door.4)Idol portrays a complete human bodyIdols worshipped here is not made of metal or stone as in most of the temples in India.
