PDF Editor FAQ

What is the most bone chilling thing a prison inmate has said to you?

What would you do if I stabbed you in the stomach with a pencil?I was teaching in a maximum-security juvenile detention center. These young men had been tried as adults for adult crimes and on their 18th birthday, they would go through the fence to the adult prison that was conveniently located right next to us. These young men were not your typical juvenile offenders. Some were serious gang members and actual leaders. Some were murderers, some pedophiles and others were simply demented and needed an exorcism.I did quite well in this job for four years because I listened to advice and kept myself safe. I worked with 11 men and half of these male teachers were Vietnam vets with combat backgrounds. I listened, I stayed alert and I stayed safe.Until we got the new principal. He had been promoted from the special education department of two. He was very flamboyant and very effeminate. This man wore one-piece jumpsuits from the 1960s. They were pea green and pink (he had two) and they were two sizes too small. This was the 1990s.He was promoted due to his seniority and it was rather short-lived I must add here. The student of interest in my story was a young man that became more interested in me as each day of my pregnancy of twins progressed. He started with small threats. All of which I wrote up in an incident report. He was given permission to progress his threats from my very own new principal. This student told me he could do anything he wanted to me and my twin babies because all he had to do was allow my new principal to place his hand on his thigh and say ‘there there, just be nice’ and he would be allowed back into my classroom. Each day this young man’s behavior was becoming more bizarre and more sexually aggressive and more violent towards me as my twins grew in my body.I had written over twenty incident reports of threats from this young man. Eight were of stabbing a pencil into my abdomen. He would ask me when he came into the room “What would you do if I stabbed you in the stomach with a pencil?” On the morning after I had submitted my twentieth report, my new principal informed me that this young man ‘really didn’t mean it’ and he was once again putting him into my classroom.I went numb. I was quite big at this time from my six-month pregnancy of twins. I remember stumbling out of the education building and going to the Warden's office. I have never spoken to this woman before in my life. I asked her rather large and foreboding secretary if I could speak with the Warden. She went into the Warden's office and returned immediately and told me to go in. I remember going in and sitting down. I had in my hands, over 20 incident report copies and I began to snivel. Then I began to sob. Now picture what she saw. This young pregnant woman just sobbing in fear in her office. She finally calmed me down long enough to get the story and look at the incident reports. She stood up so fast her chair slammed into the bookcase behind her. She yelled to her secretary and called the Sergent of security into the room.I had never spoken to him before either. She commanded him to implement an immediate lockdown of the inmates. They were just leaving breakfast and had not lined up for school yet.She told me to return to my room and relax and get some tea.I found out later all of what transpired after I left that office.ALL principals from all three facilities were called in. From the adult facility, from our violent juvenile facility, and from the non-violent juvenile facility. They were placed in a room and screamed at by my Warden for over an hour. Apparently she threw the twenty copies of threats I had given her at them. Physically threw them at them. Every man there was told their jobs were on the line. Yes, they were all men. But, I would like to say that most were good men and they commended me for having the guts to go to her.My ‘new’ principal was immediately demoted back to a teaching position with the pay scale it entailed.Four upper principals conducted a meeting with all the teachers of ALL three facilities to announce that NO ONE should be threatened over twenty times and if they are threatened even once, then changes would be made. This was after four days of lockdown.I had become quite a celebrity among the teaching staff of the three facilities. All because I was terrified he would stab me in the stomach with a pencil.

Have you ever seen something so surprising that you were momentarily stunned? What was it?

Yes, I have while visiting an old friend where we were having a BBQ in the back yard. It was a bright sunny afternoon and we had just started prepping the grill and laying out the food when it suddenly went dark.I looked up and saw a huge blimp about 50 feet off the ground. It must have been over 200 feet long moving at a snails space overhead. There was no sign on it like Goodyear or something like it and it was somewhat translucent on its surface. It scared me to death. I almost had a cardiac arrest. My buddy’s wife looked up and she fainted. I wanted to move but I couldn’t because I felt my body was paralyzed. I regained my voice and yelled at Ted to come outside because his wife had fainted. He hit the patio opening on a flat out run and fell over onto the grass like he had been hit with a baseball bat and was rolling on the ground dazed and groaning in pain. All during this time, there wasn’t a sound from the blimp and it just slowly ambled off into the distance. Finally, when I could move I went over to Jackie his wife and tried to wake her up but no response. I went over to Ted who was now slowly trying to get to his feet. So I helped him to a garden chair and went inside and called an ambulance.I stood up on the patio and looked for the blimp but it was gone and the ambulance arrived with 2 EMT’s racing into the house and then into the yard. They went to Jackie first and she started to come around. Whew! that was a reliefThey examined Ted but he was OK except for a skid mark on his knee. They came over to me and asked what happen and checked my eyes to see if I was on drugs. How considerate of them. I explained what happen and they said their company had received several calls along a 2-mile strip in this housing district of similar calls with the same sighting.Wow! When do the men in black show up? How disappointing, no men in black made the scene to threaten anyone about what they may have reported. The odd thing was this never made the local news which I thought would have been a special incident at least.Well, there's nothing like a weird experience to kill a BBQ on a sunny afternoon, but a nice stiff drink was definitely in order.

What happens to my dog when I fly him from one country to another? Specifically, the conditions in the aircraft?

During the flight, the dog is put (in its crate) in a special pressurized area of the cargo hold, which is also temperature regulated. However, you have to consider what your dog is probably going through internally, regardless of external conditions: it's been separated from its human, and doesn't know that a) this ordeal is temporary, and b) its human will be waiting for it at the end of it all. The last time your dog saw you, it was at the ticket counter. From that moment on, you went through security, went to the gate, bought a snack, etc., and your dog spent all that time possibly confused because it was away from you, crated, and being handled by strange humans in a very strange environment. Additional to that, if your dog is short-muzzled (French bulldog, English bulldog, pug, boxer, etc.) it may experience breathing difficulties on the aircraft. It's a traumatizing experience for a dog, but if you're going to move to another country, then yes, it's inevitable. My dog King was born in Brazil, but we had to move back to Mexico when he was almost two years old, and we brought him along. He was so scared when we were reunited after the flight, but returned to his happy, careless state of being the day after, when he realized I wasn't going anywhere anymore (and he had a garden to run around in once again). King lived to be over 11, and didn't have any lasting consequences from that (long!) flight. I don't regret having flown him here, because it gave me 9 more incredible years with my best friend. If you're asking because you're going on vacation to another country, I would ask you to please not do it. Don't put your dog through that just because you're taking it on vacation. If it's a small dog that fits under a seat and can fly with you, by all means go ahead. But if your dog has to travel in the cargo hold, you would both be much better off spending that money on a pet sitter or a doggy hotel.TL;DR: If you're asking because you're going to move to another country, your dog will be fine. If you're asking because you want to take your dog on vacation with you, please don't.I encourage you to read airline incident reports regarding pets, so you can make sure to take all possible steps to ensure your dog's safety: Pet friendly flying, travel and shipping information
