I’m not sure about any others. First, I was enamored by thier mufti uniform. I used to see NDA cadets during their term break going around in mufti in Connaught Place in Delhi and that was a very good reason for a 15+ years old me to decide Armed Forces as the career choice. Second, my non-brilliance in the academic field too contributed in a major way.Our batch of thirty one boys were asked to be seated in a hall where the result of five days SSB testing was to be announced. My chest number was eight. We three chest numbers made it, 5 called Madan, 8 called Rajdhan and the third chest number unrememberable, name Puri.As my number eight was announced, I stood up as was expected of us as per their instructions. Madan, number 5 was already standing up and we exchanged happy glances and nods. While these proceedings were on, my thoughts were racing that atleast the major step forward for joining the NDA was behind me. Medical check was not bothering me at that instant as I had been very active physically during the preceding one year of my preparation time.I was blissfully ignorant of need to qualify each term in every subject to keep abreast with one's batch mates. A failure in one area could set one back by six months.We three successful boys were then asked if we would accept their advice if found medically fit. I said to myself, "Anything you say, get me to NDA!" We signed on some paperwork accepting that I was willing to travel to Dehradun to appear before the IAF selection board.In the evening we were dropped at the Meerut cantonment railway station. Here first thing I did was to send a telegram to parents in Delhi saying, "Selected for Army. Going to Dehradun for IAF." Inter city telephony was not available at public places. Best and fastest communication was telegrams that were sent through morse code from post offices.Delivery of telegrams those days were associated with bad news like deaths which had to be conveyed by the fastest available means. I learnt later that when the post man came knocking at about midnight to deliver my telegram, it created a panic of sorts at home… Hope all is well!My mom was greatly relieved to learn that it was not any bad news. She definitely did not like my Dehradun trip. She was deadly against my going into the IAF….happily for her, that did not come about.February 2019, Dehradun.

Everyone is trying to leave, but we are to poor for gas money or a bus ticket.Our schools stink, we don't really have hospitals and doctors, even our best Universities are not that great.”Now, all joking aside, I love Tennessee, especially on the conservative majority Mountainous End of the state. But I will let you know a few statistics we are not so proud of.We rank as the 12th worst state for both adult and childhood Obesity.I'll add in this disclaimer before I discuss crime statistics. Of course murder is murder, you can't argue whether a person is dead, and murder is usually fairly obvious with a routine investigation and autopsy.However, Assault, Sexual Assault, and Domestic Violence have some skewed numbers in comparison to many other states. Tennessee has a quirky bail/bond system that allows the prevailing courts and jurisdictions to keep the 10% a person has paid on a bail bond if the individual is found guilty. If a person is not found guilty, you basically have to hire a lawyer to get the 10% you paid returned. So the more arrests the better the local coffers are. On almost every assault if the police are called they take someone to jail, and on Domestic Assault reaponses it is damn near 100% on at least one party, and it is fairly common for both parties to be arrested and held.Law enforcement feeds the machine new bodies by the scores and even hundreds every single day.If the county can arrest a person for a felony, then the state reimburses each county for inmates being held pre or post trial. And there is nothing fast about disposing of cases in court, unless the accused files a speedy trial motion. It creates numbers that aren't comparable to other jurisdictions that don't have equally as quirky laws. Probation sentences are even quickies, because you are entering a plea (usually as a part of a deal) the 10% bond money is secured for the system, there is also a significant fine to be paid, and the local probation contractor gets to collect a decent fee each month for a few minutes work per client. The basic costs of being booked into a jail vary widely in Tennessee some of little or no Fees, and some have over $20,000 in Fees for your stay, even if it us is a few days.Although we aren't still challenging Missouri for the number one spot in number of meth labs per 100,000 residents. We are still in the top ten at number eight. (The bad news is that despite a decrease in the apparent number of labs, the purity of Tennessee meth has increased from 47% 7 years ago, to 94% in 2019.There is a good bit of Marijuana grown in Tennessee. If you stumble across a patch leave, before you are shot!Once again despite improvement, we are no longer in the top 5 on per capita murder rate, we are still at number eight per capita, and number 13 on total murders.All violent crimes, this one really sucks. We are number three in the nation behind New Mexico and Alaska. We have about 650 violent crimes for every 100,000 people each year.Registered Sex Offenders. We are number 4 in the nation at 418 per 100,000.Rapes we are number 18. But we have all been told that rape statistics are a very inaccurate portrayal of the actual numbers of rapes and sexual assaults, as so many go unreported. Certain areas of the country, along with certain cultures are very reluctant to report sexual assault. REPORTED Forceable rapes per 100,000 is 31.5 annually. Lifetime it is estimated at over 20,000 per 100,000 women and 1740 per 100,000 men across the nation wide and we are above that.We are ranked 35th nationally on K-12 schools. We have some great ones, and we have some that are little more than a poor excuse of stat and county sponsored child neglect.At the College level Tennessee is No. 39 overall for the subcategory of “quality of education and attainment gap,” thanks in part to its No. 35 ranking for “average university quality.” But the state only mustered a No. 43 ranking for both the subcategory “education attainment rank” and the survey as a whole. (We have colleges in some areas that should be closed, and administrators criminally charged for fraud.)On a positive note for education, the first two years of college will be paid for by the proceeds of the Tennessee state lottery (two drawings in two categories daily).Lottery money is flowing into the K-12 schools as well.Our High School graduation rate is 90% (we have a teen [15 to 19] birthrate of 25.4 per 100,000) females only graduate 84% of all eligible. Getting married and quitting high school is still fairly common, especially for pregnant students.We have an abysmal 26.1% of eligible residents with an undergraduate degree, and just 9.6% with an advanced post graduate degree. (My wife and I live in a rural part of the state and we both have advanced degrees, but we are a very rare couple here. Truth be told the United States Air Force, VA and post,grad scholorships paid a hefty portion of our education costs.)Income is not the greatest either we are number 41 in the nation $25,000 average income; $44,000 average household income; and $55,500 median family income.Housing is cheap compared to the northeast, left, and right coasts as well. $500,000 here is a huge house sitting on five acres in most counties.Electricity, we have the Tennessee Valley Authority delivering us relatively cheap and all we can use electric power. We even ship power out west on the national highlines. We have 72 electric producing facilities, and seven of them are Nuclear Reactors, (we would have more nukes but the tree huggers shut them down.) TVA has a normal power production of 33.7 Gigawatts and powers parts of seven states in a daily basis. (My county often hits above 85% on Conservative voting).There are very few Jews, or Hindus, and only slightly more Muslims, and other religions that total less than 9%. Another 9% are not religiously affiliated, and 82% are Christian (primarily Protestant). Tennessee is rated the 5th most active state religiously.Firearms, well, we got ‘em. A few are even registered. I'm comfortable saying there is more than one firearm per person in Tennessee. If it is short of that it would probably be in a few cities. The suburbs and rural areas almost always have one to four firearms (22 Rifle, Shotgun, “Deer Rifle," and a handgun), or they are working on getting there, or have gone way past. Not everyone has more than 10 guns, but many do.We are number seven in the nation for total concealed carry permits. About 15 to 20% of adults over 21 and under 65 have a CCW permit. Concealed care and open care of handguns is permitted in Tennessee. Loaded long guns do not require a permit, but the individual holding the firearm must be over 18, or with an adult guardian. (Which is doing better, back in my youth we started hunting without an older person at about 12 years old. By 14 years old I owned a 22 LR, 20 Guage pump, and 30-06 Deer Rifle; and took them out when I pleased, but that was the early 70s, times have changed.)However, an individual is free to carry a loaded handgun or long gun in their car without a permit as part of the expanded "castle doctrine" self-defense law. Those rifles and shotguns you see on racks in pick-up truck rear windows are usually loaded. As is the AR-15 with the muzzle resting on the passenger floorboard and the rifle butt right at the drivers hands if needed. don't get hostile on our roads, these rednecks have loaded guns in their vehicles, or at least assume they do, and they will shoot you.Never mess with our dogs, just, well, just by jacks don't do it.Gravy is a beverageBiscuits and gravy are eaten by almost everyone except carpetbagger communists.Fried chicken is a tradition and those who cook it well are held in great adoration and reverence.“Bless your heart” and “God Bless You” don't mean what outsiders from up north and out west think they do.One final blurp. We don't care how you did it somewhere else, we don't care to hear how great where you used to live is. Please go back from where you originated if you must tell us these things. If it was so great why did you leave?Tennessee is not terrible, but it needs improvement. If you are looking to retire, and have a average to decent retirement check for the northeast you can do very, very well here. Just stay out of Memphis, Nashville, Chattanooga, and Knoxville is marginal. Tennessee has drug and crime issues, as well as education and salary issues.
