PDF Editor FAQ

Why are voter ID laws so controversial? Assuming that state issued photo IDs are made easy to procure, then what's the problem?

I’m a Canadian who has worked at polling places during elections. We require identification to vote, and I am entirely in favor of that. What Canada has also done is to address they key part of your question, which is making identification easy to procure. That has not happened in the United States.Elections Canada has a list of 52 possible items that can be used to identify yourself and that you live in the jurisdiction for the purposes of voting. You can vote using just one of:your driver's licenceyour provincial or territorial ID cardany other government card with your photo, name and current addressIf you don’t have any of those things there are 49 other options, although there is a restriction that you have to provide two of them, one of which has to show your address. This list includes such readily available things as:a utility bill (e.g. electricity; water; telecommunications services including telephone, cable or satellite)your bank statementYour apartment leasea label on a prescription containerThis can even be based on on-line versions, either printed out or displayed on a smart phone. Even someone who is homeless can vote as long as they have a letter of confirmation of residence, letter of stay, admission form, or statement of benefits from a shelter or a soup kitchen. See Elections Canada Online | ID to VoteIn short, we have made it very easy to comply with the identification laws while also protecting against voter fraud. There is no need to have a specialized government issued identification, or to jump through the hoops to get one. Voter ID laws that provide a very limited range of identification options, and then make those options difficult to get, are likely aimed at voter suppression more than voter fraud. And therein lies the problem with voter ID laws in the U.S. See Analysis | Do voter identification laws suppress minority voting? Yes. We did the research. In the time I have worked polling places I have had to turn people away because they didn’t have the required ID with them. In every case we discussed options, and then they went home and got the necessary documents. I have never had to turn a single voter away because they couldn’t, ultimately, meet the ID requirements. Nor have I had to deal with anyone who was even remotely suspicious…at least not in terms of voting. And there, by the way, is another thing. Polling places are numerous and accessible. I remember one case where I had to send someone home to get the proper ID. I think they were gone less than 10 minutes…and they had walked. In fact most people had walked to the polling place because it was so close to home.It is the duty of a Government to encourage the widest possible participation in the democracy. Political parties, on the other hand, may have a vested interest in that not happening.

Which one is better NIIT - IFBI PGDBO of ICICI or TimesPro PGDBM?

I have no idea about TimesPro PGDBM, but I do know that NIIT’s IFBI confirms that you are placed in ICICI Bank before you pay for your training fees. So, this is how is works (ICICI PGDBO):Visit an NIIT Center which provides PGDBO.Give a written test (IELTS).Give an English test (an essay of 150–200 words is to be written)Give an interview to an ICICI Banking professional (happens on the center itself through Skype or in person).Await for confirmation of selectionGet confirmed, pay your fees - get your letter of intent from ICICI Bank and start training.Undergo 3 months of training, followed by 3 months of Internship (in which you get paid =~ Rs. 8000 INR.Start working in ICICI Bank as a Senior Banking Officer, profile involves Transaction Processing/Customer Handling/Back-Office etc.Hope I cleared your points about NIIT’s PDGBO program.Cheers. ^_^

Are there any international students on Quora that got accepted to an Ivy League, Stanford, or MIT? If so, what made you stand out?

Yes, there are! I was admitted to Yale two months ago. I’m Japanese and my school is taught in Japanese, so I think I’m qualified to answer your question :)Let’s start with some math: 3~4 million students are going to enter college (Internationals included). The sum of the size of the incoming freshman class at Ivy League, Stanford & MIT is roughly 17,000. This means that only 1 in 200±30 students will be enrolled at one of these institutions. You have to be in the top 0.5%.I believe that this rule applies regardless of whether you are an international applicant or not.So, statistically, you should aim to be in the top 0.5%.I had rather strong extracurriculars and grades that would put me in the top 0.5%, but in a pool of applicants with similar stats, I didn’t stand out much.Same thing for standardized tests: my scores were 1520 for SAT and 116 for iBT, which don’t stand out in a group of international applicants. So, what is it that made me stand out?I think it’s my essays and recommendation letters.Adaptability was one thing I wanted to emphasize. I moved to a different city six times. When I joined a school in Japan from Australia in 11th grade, I was more than a year behind everyone else in every subject except for English and PE. However, I caught up in a month and became top of the class a year later. The ability to adapt and emulate is my biggest strength. Thus, my main CommonApp essay was about adapting to new places and growing, and one of my recommendation letters acted as a confirmation of my adaptability and growth in terms of academics.Grades, extracurriculars and awards are the things that represent your ability NOW. On the other hand, essays are the things that show your potential. In order to get into the Ivy League, Stanford or MIT, you have to be strong in both of the two. However, the latter is more important, and I think that’s why I got accepted, although I was only at the level of an average student at these institutions (which isn’t enough to be accepted as a non-legacy international student)
