My grandfather landed on Omaha beach in WWII as a Brigadier or Major general. His name was Willard Gordon Wyman. Does anyone have information about his history, activities and responsibilities around the D-day invasion?

You can probably get his entire service record.I got my Dad’s, and you can do most online.Veterans' Service RecordsYou will need as much info as you can get. Name, rank, serial number, when he served, from what date to what date.if he would be less than 100 years old on the date you request, you need a death certificate. You need something to prove you are a grandson, or if one of HIS kids is still alive, they can put in the request.the reason is, to get the full, unredacted record, you must be PNOK, Personal Next Of Kin. Otherwise, you just get a very basic record.one of grand Dad is kids is either your Mom or Dad. They should have a copy of their birth certificate showing grandad as father. That proves the are Personal next of Kin.the webiste walks you through it pretty nicely.you can scan the documents to them nowadays.its worth it, my Dad’s jacket is 1/2” think, lots of stuff.if they say they can’t find iT, persist, call and say he was a general. A copy of his DD-214 (homourable discharge) helps, because his serial number will be on it, and when the see his rank, they may move faster.it took me 3 tries. On the third try I insisted I speak to an officer, and that did it.Good luck. You should be proud you granddad served. Mine was a Marine, Roi+Namur, Saipan, Tinian, Iwo Jima.I was Navy.my #1 sonn enlisted at the bottom E-1 and is now, 21years later, and O-4 LtCdr, USN.his son, my grandson is USMC, 2 years now.so 4 generations have served with pride.my#2 son is the black sheep. He’s a copper.

Who is history's greatest badass, and why?

I think that one of the greatest badass from our past should be Ben L. Salomon:During WW2, Mr. Salomon served as an instructor, leader, and dentist for the US 105th Infantry Regiment.During the Battle of Saipan, the Japanese defending the island were instructed to die in battle and never surrender. The Japanese General overseeing the battle, Saito Yoshitsugu, told his troops,"We will advance to attack the American forces and will all die an honorable death. Each man will kill ten Americans."These 5,000 remaining men were gladly prepared to die for the Axis cause. Their brutal suicide charges led to an 83% causalty rate for the Americans trying to take the Island. To get back to Dr. Salomon, he was in a field hospital on the front lines, trying to save the wounded men, with the screams, gunshots, explosions, and all other horrors of war permeating in the backgroundSuddenly, two Japanese rush into the tent and start bayoneting the defenseless wounded soldiers. Salomon grabs an M1 Rifle, and shoots the Japanese soldier before he can kill any more defenseless men. He then clubs the other solider with his gun before bayoneting him. Then four more Japanese men were crawling under the tent trying to flank him. One of the men had a knife in his hand. Salomon ran over and kicked the weapon out of the man’s hand before he could get up. Salomon sighted his rifle and fired, killing the attacker, and by that time he heard the distinctinctive ping, the sign he had run out of ammo. But Salomon wasn’t going to let a lack of bullets stop him from saving his wounded men. After bayoneting another attacker, he then picked up the knife, stabbed the third guy, then proceeded to headbutt the fourth. He heard on the radio signals that the Banzai Charge was soon reaching the Field Hospital. He ordered his remaining men to carry the 30+ wounded men to safety while Salomon was to defend the position single-handedly.When the last of the men left, he saw Salomon feeding bullets to the heavy .30 Caliber Machine Gun all by himself. When the Marines came back to inspect what happened, they saw Salomon lying dead, surrounded by 98 dead Japanese attackers. From what they saw, they inferred that Salomon repositioned the super-heavy .30 caliber machine gun four separate times all by himself. Each move was required because the enemy dead had piled up so high in front of him that he couldn’t get a clear line of fire through the stack of corpses. He sacrificed himself against a massive charge of men unafraid of death, just so the wounded could get away.He posthumously received the Medal of Honor in 2002, delayed all these years due to an original misreading of the Geneva Convention. He certainly gets a badass certification from me.Links:The Amazing Heroism of Ben L. The CocoDoc website is a good tool for converting graphics to PDF and vice versa. The Mac application version is more difficult to use in my opinion.
