Is it true that all native species of North American Earthworms died out during the last Ice Age?

As far as I know, they only died out in areas that were actually covered by ice—meaning New England and the northern plains states. The last glaciation, called the Wisconsin glaciation in North America (shown in light blue), got as far south as central Iowa. Earlier glaciations (shown in light purple) reached northern Missouri. But south of that, there was no ice, and earthworms survived. There are about 100 species of earthworm in the southern United States—I used to see them all the time when gardening. And while some might have been introduced in the soil on imported plants, or by people discarding bait, as far as I know most of them are native, although I’m not a specialist in earthworm taxonomy. But in the north, in the glaciated zone, any earthworms that were once present were wiped out.Yes, “Canadian nightcrawlers” are not actually native to Canada—they’re an introduced European species, Lumbricus terrestris. The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources is actually warning people not to dispose of leftover bait earthworms by dumping them. Minnesota forests naturally do not contain earthworms, because the Ice Age wiped them out and they didn’t return when the trees regrew. So the soil in a typical Minnesota forest is covered with several feet of spongy, springy, slowly decaying leaves, called duff. Native wildflowers and other plants are adapted to grow and thrive in the duff. When earthworms are introduced, they destroy the duff, native plants can’t grow, and undesirable introduced species can gain a foothold.Wisconsin forest without earthworms:Wisconsin forest with earthworms—much less ground cover; grasses replacing ferns:Images taken from this article: European earthworms cause big problems in North American forests. There’s more information at the MN Department of Natural Resources. Here’s a recent newspaper article: Earthworms are bait. They're also a nightmare for healthy Minnesota forests. And Wikipedia has more: Invasive earthworms of North America. And here’s a poster you can print out! http://nrri.d.umn.edu/worms/downloads/action/Contain%20those%20crawlers_poster.pdf

What is Iowa like as a place to live?

I'm sure there will be a lot of answers but I was just talking about this with my husband today so I will give it a stab.In Iowa there are bigger cities like Des Moines and Cedar Rapids that boast miniature versions of actual big cities around the U.S. - the good and the bad. Sports teams, farmers markets, hipster havens, etc. There are also a lot of small towns where everyone goes to the football game in Friday nights, Everton calls the mayor by his first name and you really honestly do leave your house unlocked. One of they cool things about Iowa is that, while there aren't any mountains or ocean beaches, we have a ton of lakes and state parks and county recreational areas for outdoor activities. You could never see them all. Our Department of Natural Resources (DNR) does an amazing job.

What career can I make by studying geography?

I have a degree in Geography. I am currently the business owner of a digital marketing firm. I spend most of my time selling and developing websites. Before that I was a GIS analyst, a Prototype Engineer, an Environmental Consultant and work for the Iowa Department of Natural Resources. The answer: about 30% of college graduates work in their field of study directly. If you study Geography and wish to work in the field study GIS, Photogrametry, Remote Sensing and/or Statistics. The largest employers of geographer are state & federal governments. Next up are real estate developers, petrochemical companies and tech industry. Think Google, Apple and ESRI.Honestly, if you're a Geographer, your probably awesome. Geographer are people interested in the outdoors, travel and the world at large. There's lots opportunities and fascinating niches to study.
