Old the games may be, but a lot of it is down to nostalgia, plus let’s face it, Nintendo, Sega, Sony, and SNK (or whoever its successor is now) are doing the exact same thing by releasing mini consoles. These mini consoles pretty much allow less technically-inclined adults to play the games of their childhood with not a lot of effort compared to say setting up a Raspberry Pi, although equally, most of the ROMs that are acquired for that aren’t exactly legal!All that said however, the full-size version of TheC64 does have capabilities that the other Mini consoles don’t have, and that’s the ability to load D64 and D81 (essentially digitised images of C64 floppies) files, which opens it up to a lot more functionality, as you can download those files to a USB stick and run them on the actual device (which is also possible with TheC64 Mini), and not only that, there are new C64 games still being released to this day, so this feature will allow those newer C64 games to be played on both versions of TheC64.. at least if the files are D64, as I’m not currently sure about T64/TAP (tape) and CRT (cartridge) files at this time.One thing I’m curious about too is the “VIC-20 BASIC” mode on the full-size version of TheC64, as it makes me wonder if VIC-20 disk images will be loadable on that, seeing as it may be possible, given that you’re typing in both BASIC and also commands on the relevant screens.Either way though, to go back to your question… yes, the games are “old fashioned” by today’s standards, but there’s a lot of nostalgia involved there for some people, plus there might also be some unique gaming experiences that have never been translated into a modern equivalent, plus it’s a nice thing to show newer generations curious about older games.I am going to be picking one up though in any case, despite having an original C64 (two C64Cs in fact), because it would be more convenient to run one of those out as opposed to having an original one out, especially as I want to preserve the original hardware for as long as possible!
